Flying Scholarship?
Whilst at OASC I heard rumours that the Flying Scholarship was making a comeback for ATC and CCF cadets. Can anyone confirm or unconfirm (more likely) this rumour? Any comments welcome. Thanks.

This might be what you refer to. However the old RAF scholarship training providers don't seem to be involved so I have no idea where this is done.
You may also be too late as today is the closing date!

Yes the Flying Scholarship is back after being suspended for a "review".
Sadly the review has reduced the hours given to (I think) about 13.
Quite what use 13hrs is I dont know as no cadet of mine (and our Squadron has a catchment area of probably one of the more wealthy areas in the uk) who could afford to finance the rest of the hours themselves.
Just received a questionnaire asking what the RAF can do to encourage more cadets to join up!.. .Give us more money - stop cutting back

I have not heard that the scholarship is back, however, I would imagine that 13 hours is enough to send a cadet solo, rather like the gliding ascholarship which offers enough launches to send cadets solo (or solo standard).
If you are a member of the ATC, check with your CO or Wing flying/gliding liason officer.

Thanks for the information guys, I am v.grateful. Clear Prop, you were quite right, that website gave the closing date as the day you posted, which was unfortunate because I read it the day after! I have a question, I was awarded a Flying Scholarship back in 1983, which at that time was 30/38ths of a PPL. I had to do the full Biggin Hill bit beforehand and had the experience of a lifetime whilst on the course. My question is, who at that time was sponsoring the Scheme?. .. .I would like to know who I should I have thanked for helping me down the road to a flying career?

How sad that the RAF no longer provides full scholarships. Thirteen hours doesn't seem very much. I was lucky enough to get 30 hours' flying (previously I believe it was 40 hours) and it certainly set me on the road to a flying career.

I don't know for definate but I believe that the 'new' flying scholarship is designed to give the youngsters an experience of what flying in the RAF may be like. The chaps and chapesses will be shown formation, IF and low(ish)level nav, but they will not have any where near enough time for a PPL. Then they join up and do EFT. . .. .The EFT cse is designed that, if you sit the groundschool exams successfully, you will have completed the requirements for a PPL on graduation. It doesn't quite work like that, but it's not far off. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

Sorry to ask the question again, but does anyone know where these scholarships will take place?. .. .Will the training providers involved in the old system, such as Tayside Aviation etc, still be used?

For the up-to-date info regarding Flying Scholarships I suggest that you contact Tayside Aviation in Dundee(01382 644577) as they are the Prime Contractor. I completed a 30 hr Flying Scholarship with them in 1986 and without doubt it showed me the way into a successful career as a RAF fast jet pilot. Any more success stories out there? Long live the Flying Scholarship!!
Sandy,. .. .Mine was a 30 hour FS in 1965, when 30 hours got you a PPL. Left the course (Stapleford Tawney) in mum's minivan, with L plates!. .. .I like to think it helped set me on course, intially RN, still flying, with my own company <img border="0" title="" alt="[Cool]" src="cool.gif" />

It's a small world!. .I did my scholarship at Tayside Aviation in '88 and went back after the course and did the remaining 8 hours for a PPL. Had to get my dad to pick me up as I still couldnt drive!!. .A good start to an aviation career and lets you know how bloody dangerous puddle jumpers are. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="biggrin.gif" />

Went to dundee as well. Fond memories of faulty towers and basil (never found out his real name!). .marjan instructed me, and i must say every hour I spent there was worthwhile. Shame the bean counters have spoiled it by getting rid.. .Managed to get solos in at three airfields as well, during my 20 day stay.. .Off to Cranditz in August to Start IOT.

Just talked to Tayside Aviation, they are trying to collect Flying "Wings" from ex-flying scholars... their address is Dundee Airport, Riverside Drive, Dundee DD2 1UH Can anyone help??

Don't forget that the Crabs aren't the only bunch to offer Flying Scholarships! I was the grateful recipient of 30 hours of flying lessons courtesy of the Bodmin flying club back in 1990 paid for by the Royal Navy and had a hoofing time!. .. .I just hope that they are still running the scheme because it's a fantastic way to get flying experience and started me down that path to frontline flying in the RN. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Razz]" src="tongue.gif" />
