Gnd,

I think that you may be using one rotten apple to spoil the barrel. Whilst, in the past, standards units may have required immediate answers to questions relating to a platform that the designer would have found it difficult to answer without reference to notes I suggest that, perhaps, they are becoming a bit more pragmatic - if only because they are likely to be less experienced themselves than the hairy old STANEVAL of the past.

Now where's your log book so that I can remove your Cat!

Is DVLA a troll?

DVLA is an agency. His location is a car number.

AIDU is a unit. AIDU was a troll.

Is DVLA = AIDU?

Duncan, granted I may be being unfair but it is not that far in the past that I get my venom from. Last STANEVAL 'monitor' was appalling and sent the unit into unnecessary convulsions (IMHO) but the next week with Exam Wing (small but perfectly balanced) was a breath of fresh air, had a really positive feel to the trips, and so very pragmatic - the one big difference was Exam Wing made the decision and backed it up, STANEVAL made it and ran away with little explanation or then backup to assist in rectifying their, possible, unfounded recommendations. Apparently they still haven’t explained their reasoning?

Personalities may well be a large part of the small but significant upheaval!!
And back to the subject, there is still a place for INDEPENDENT standards, CFS are best placed to do this but it may be that the process has got so diluted that it is now not working – non-AI as STANOS? Point to ponder. CFS does train ANY aviator in a very good way – should be the baseline possibly?

aaah yes, the Stagnation Point Quizz focussing on a straight leading edge Vs those at 26 Degrees.....followed by the old question on voltage limits for the AI, and the temperature that sets the fire detector off. I particularly liked the one about the fuel dump failure while operating single engine on the non-essential AC Bus.....even the guys in the Sim can't answer that one.

...trully trully opeartional questions those ones....!

Best one I came across at Cranwell in the 80s was:

"why does the JP5A have 4 static vent plugs?"

Can anyone remember the answer???

Flew the Gazelle as well (fabulous machine). Seem to recall that the slip ball was edible, but not sure how you actually got to it!

You drank the liquid that it 'floats' in first - which is alcohol...

PN

I think you are being unkind to Scandinavian Goblins.

AIDU was much more obnoxious.

The purpose of a standards unit is to provide an old boys club and rest home for aircrew who have been on a fleet 10+ (maybe 15+) years, and can no longer hide on the OCU to avoid actually being on a front line squadron and going on those nasty operational detachments.

When did anyone see someone from STANEVAL go back to a squadron (ok, I expect there was one once!!)

In order to justify their existence these individuals feel obliged to come up with totally impractical questions that they only know the answer to, and nit pick to the Nth degree a flying performance that was good or better.

There are two exceptions to the above. One is the young thrusting career animal, who sees a tour on STANEVAL as a way to make their mark on the promotion trail.

The other is that most rare of animals on STANEVAL, a decent individual who is practical in approach, and tries to spread rather than hoard knowledge...

You were all obviously abused by trappers at various times........................ah Staneval lives and breathes.
Scary thing was that I had to go back to doing on the front line, after instructing and trapping!
I would like to point out that it isn't a light blue standards unit that has the callsign 'Axeman'

Mmmnice,

Funny, thought about you! They've obviously confused CFS Standards with STANEVAL.

Seems quite obvious that one or two rather bitter and twisted chaps thought they were good enough to do the job but never quite made the grade when it came round to STANEVAL selection time
