How to take a sabbatical?
I'm coming to the end of my first tour in rotary world. My next tour will hopefully mean a change of type and would thus be a natural break. I'd like to take a year out to further my education (un payed). Has anyone already taken a sabbatical or does anyone know how best to go about sorting one out.
I know that the first port of call is now to talk to one's "line manager" but as his response was "i dont know, and i dont care about your career" i thought i'd give you guys a try. The best i've heard of late is ha ha ha ha ha you'll be lucky!
Cheers

I don't own this space under my name. I should have leased it while I still could

Pregnancy?
I know one current, I think, and one retired AVM. Both took sabaticals and gained PhDs before they were promoted to gp capt.
They were not first tourist in danger of skill fade.

I think what you are looking for is SLWP (Special Leave Without Pay). I believe that this can be granted in exceptional cases and it is in the interest of the service. Not entirely sure, but its a starting point.
Give that a try

Leave Without Pay? Try HLDS
Instead of taking an unpaid Sabbatical, why not consider applying for the fully-paid Higher Level Defence Studies - studying for a Masters' in international relations at Cambridge, Oxford or, err, Hull (true!). The appicant criteria has widened and the qualification is increasingly recognised by Desk Officers. Imagine... spending a year as a student (relaxed grooming standards apply), attending a few lectures, and being paid handsomly to read, think and write. In all seriousness, it is very hard work but very, very satisfying. Your Stn Education Flight (oops! sorry, Force Provider Guru Tower) can help with the details covered in a DIN, or speak with D Def Studs (RAF). PM me if you want more details.

End of first tour and on RW ?
Best of luck, but I suspect that PMA will shoot you down in flames very quickly. I hope you get it, as this sort of thing is needed to make the Service more attractive to future generations - please keep us informed as to how you get on.
