Instead of taking an unpaid Sabbatical, why not consider applying for the fully-paid Higher Level Defence Studies - studying for a Masters' in international relations at Cambridge, Oxford or, err, Hull (true!). The appicant criteria has widened and the qualification is increasingly recognised by Desk Officers. Imagine... spending a year as a student (relaxed grooming standards apply), attending a few lectures, and being paid handsomly to read, think and write. In all seriousness, it is very hard work but very, very satisfying.
