I have just overheard a conversation between 2 friends in the crewroom and I am quite confused as to the correct answer. The conversation was discussing whether or not ELC's can be used towards obtaining a PPL with a view to upgrading eventually to CPL then ATPL? Has anybody actually heard of this happening? If so I would be very interested in registering to do exactly that. Any help on this subject would be greatly appreciated.

All perfectly Ok to use the ELC for a PPL. In the Navy you have to be aircrew to use the ELC for the PPL, however if you are not aircrew you can still do it if you have a Personal Development Plan claiming that you wish to train as a flying instructor (and therefore able to offer something back to the service taking matelots for flying lessons).

I am aircrew and have tried searching the forums but there doesnt appear to be any info on the ELC. The website for ELC is pretty vague as well. Oh well I will just need to bite the bullet and speak to the station education section after my leave

Why only aircrew? I have the hours to start CPL course and an Air Traffic Controller you tell me an non pilot aircrew can get ELC and I cant? Equal Ops and discrimenation are in my mind!!

Just to clarify one line of thinking. The education centre of my neck of the woods once answered the very same question with "are you aircrew" ?.
Their take on it all was - if you are aircrew then the completing a PPL would be of direct benefit to the service (RAF), and so you would be able to.

This I disagree with, I think for all trades to be given the oportunity to learn to fly would be of immense benefit to the service, but once again the blinkers are on within the policy making circles.

How can a WSO sitting in the back of Nimrod be more entitled just because he is aircrew? Though I guess if they got an airline job they could double up as a steward, they are used to operating ovens and serving drinks?

Yes we can all take a bit of Banter, however bad choice of aircraft type for a joke of that nature right now.
Moving on..........I am sure that many WSO would agree with you with respect to suitability for PPL ELC guidelines, again however, they are not the ones dictating the policy!

As an engineer I used the ELC for the MCC - don't remember anyone querying it.

First thing to do is to make sure that you are registered,i registered with my course when i went through Linton, when i went to use it they had no record of our registration. I checked with the others and they were in the same boat. There is an appeals process but i found it to be as much use as a chocolate fireguard in my personal case.

Bit !!!!! really, esp' as i have left now and doing my ATPL the money could have come in very handy.

I May Have Got This Wrong, But...

I stand to be corrected - I've registered for ELC scheme (a while ago), but not prgressed further - but, I thought the purpose of the ELC scheme was for personal development and did not have to be of direct benefit back to the Service. Yet another of the hoop-jumping exercises introduced to enable our beloved seniors say they are doing more than just paying lip service to the MOD IIP accreditation!!!!

Damn that soapbox has caught up with me again!!!!

I used my ELC for a type rating.................£1000 towards it.
It's a level 5 NVQ!!!!!!!!!
