If Carlsberg made detachments!

In this expeditionary World that we live in these days, it seems that the Americans have got it pegged with many of the comforts from home. Cable TV, Burger King, Pizza Hut, BX, Swimming Pool, Cinema, and everything from a massage to Dunkin Donuts!

If you were in charge and had the budget, what facilities would you like to see on det?

Also has anyone got any funny tales of extravgent creature comforts brought away on Ops?

Limey to USAF colleague: "This Oasis place you've got here on base is amazing. Table tennis, volleyball, computer games, free food and drink, swimming pool and slide!"

USAF: "Yes but the (US) General's not happy"

Limey: "Too much fatty food, and distractions from the focus on Ops?"

USAF: "No. He's not happy because the slide's just an up-and-downer. He wants one with 3 curves in it"

.... leadership, .... individual needs, ...... morale, ....... in touch with the boys/girls - and tons of cash.

Sandy S*%£hole.

I was in on a det in one of the many sandy places we loved to visit and was amazed at the resplendant US Air Force outdoor volleyball facilities. In the bar during the course of an evening it became clear that the sand in or abouts this S&*"hole in the desert wasn't good enough and so they had shipped in all the sand for both volleyball courts, from California!! Now that's my kind of war.

I did hear of a NAAFI wagon that was loaded on the wrong ship during D-Day WWII. The ship was underway by the time the mistake was realised, and the only way for the other War going vehicles to get ashore was for the NAAFI waggon to be landed in one of the first waves. Troops landing later in the day were amazed to find a working NAFFI waggon on the beach with a sweet young girl handing out cups of tea and butties. Now thats service!

I'd enjoy my days in the 'Deid more if the USAF had to wear afro wigs, when they're off duty:

"Eh, eh, cam down"

Hee hee

Carlsberg DID do dets ......

It was called Northern Watch oeprating out of Incirlik Air Base in southern Turkey. Shared a house on the married patch with a bunch of other JOs. The house opposite was also full of JOs - party! All the modcons and creature comforts you could ask for - tv, dvd player (with 5 free dvds per week delivered to your door!), big garden for sunbathing, bars, cinema and to top it all a golf club ON base.

And if all that wasn't enough, more rates than you could shake a stick at and the dirt cheap Adana Hilton 20 mins down the road for Sunday lunch. Did I mention the medal as well? (missed out on that thanks to TELIC kicking off, but hey, it was still a possibility!)

Either that or the 4* hotel in Gioia del Colle with 39 Sqn whilst doing Kosovo. Me a mere holding officer as Det Adjt with a blonde 18 yr old uni student called Angelica as my translator. And again, more rates than I knew what to do with.

So there you have it - Carlsberg did do dets. I'm now paying for it though and haven't made it out of the desert in the past 4 years. Bollocks!

Carlsberg DOES do dets:

The Rev's next 4 month OOA trip to the sandy place is to the British Embassy in Abu Dhabi.

Apartment, Car, LOA and as much Ferrero Rocher as I can eat.

Bummer eh?

Of course the morale police wil cancel it about a week before I am due to go and send me somewhere nasty.

Not exactly a detachment but in 63 as an army brat in Libya we used to tune in to American Forces Television. It must have been twenty years before we finally got BFBS TV throughout BAOR!! (I say tune in, at four years old I don't think I had the strength to turn the clunking great channel selector!). The US have always known how to live easy.
