Sexual Harrassment Questionnaire
Just had the newest attempt to weed out Sexual Harrasment in my intray. Was sooooooo disappointed to see that it concentrated on women only. When is the military (and society, incidentally) going to learn that things are pretty much evened-out right now and it happens to blokes as well as women?
Not wishing to incite a Big Brother-esque argument, but what are your thoughts (chaps and chapesses)???
I've not been in as long as many of the regular PPRuNeers, but as far as I've seen (and I'm part of the flying training system right now), women have used their position to get their own way (as have blokes I know). Is it time to address the issue from an even standpoint or do people out there still believe that things are one sided???

Olly Dear chap
can you put this questionaire or a ref to it on line for the rest of us to peruse? I know excactly what you are talking about but have not seen the appropriate document. Bye the way for what it is worth, if you are still in the training system and the questionaire has ANY form of number on it then just answer according to what they want to hear, tell them what your head says NOT what your heart says!

Here's an true anecdote from my days as an auditor; about 17 years ago!! I worked as an audit senior for a well-known manufacturer of filing cabinets whose name bears the place of manufacture! I had, working with me, a young lad fresh from university as my junior trainee. As part of the audit he had to cross the paint shop which was virtually staffed by women. I thought nothing of it until the poor boy came back in nearly in tears.
Now I thought the main shop floor of blokes was bad until this chap told me what these women had said as he walked past. In the end, I had to have "a little word" with the fore(wo)man and ask her to tell the women to give the boy a break.
So yes, it can work both ways BUT it is not usual.
In most circumstances of sexual harrassment, it comes from a senior person down to a junior and MOST senior positions, whether military or otherwise, are still held by men.
The nature of general characteristics should be considered here and one to one sexual harrassment by a woman to a man must be very rare indeed. I'm not saying it doesn't happen but rare it is. Men also have the tacit advantage of physical strength and that is something that many women will fear, even in the workplace.
However, what I appreciate is difficult for anyone to judge, is what what person finds acceptable banter, another may be upset and offended by. I hope it doesn't go too far.
I do not think I have ever been the subject of sexual harrassment; probably because most men wouldn't dare! But it could also be that I have a higher tolerance threshold than others.
But any behaviour that upsets someone else needs to be considered and addressed, preferably by the person themself rather than have them running off to their manager or worse, HR!
Cheers

What on earth could they have said to the poor little mite?
"Is that only a 4 inch brush"?
"Would yer like to be glossed over"?
"Fancy a bit of a rub down"?
"Come an' do what it says on the tin"?
"My mate says can you come and primer"?

Er, well, yes. And worse. Sadly this lad didn't have the experience of your 8 decades and had lead a sheltered life and was quite distressed by it.

"I do not think I have ever been the subject of sexual harassment; probably because most men wouldn't dare!"
It's not a case of wouldn't dare, it's the fact that men have been so totally emasculated by the comfy shoe wearers and the subsequent disciplinary mire that any form of office banter is now likely to result in that is now simply not an option
What a lovely pink and fluffy world we now live in

I don't own this space under my name. I should have leased it while I still could

It's sad that men now feel they've been emasculated; I hope you don't mean that "masculated" gives you carte blanch to make unwanted advances and comments to those who might find it distressing.
The corollary to that is that it WAS tough working in a male environment in the 80s - I hope we don't have a backlash and a return to the "old days".

Just DOB
Filled in a different DOB and sure enough we got hasteners as our survey forms had not been returned.
Bin.

Duly filled it in with similar answers to the first effort but with the query at the end asking if they were going to keep sending me these forms until I replied with the answers they were looking for.
Olly - if you are in the trg system and you feel as though it is your duty not to bin the questionnaire, be a good chap toe the party line and tick the right boxes, even if in your heart of heart you know it's the wrong box. Anonymous surveys don't exist in the RAF!

I am in the training system, but as a Nazi. Bugger, didn't think about it not being anonymous - there's me being all trustworthy! Bang goes the promotion - wrote something not very PC in the "General Comments" box and fired it back. It's either sitting on someone's desk with a big post-it note on it or, as I assumed it would be totally ignored, has probably gone in the bin.
Whirly - I'm right there with you - there is definitely no place for sexual harassment (whichever way around it manifests itself), but I was just so annoyed at the direction of the questionnaire. Having seen a female student promise to tell a fellow instructor's fiance that they were having an affair if she wasn't helped through I think it certainly exists both ways around. Incidentally, she was VERY drunk and denied it ever happened.

Olly, at the bottom of this thread you'll see a link to a similar thread in Rotorheads.
I deplore the way some women use sex as a weapon; THAT is the one thing that turns the whole harrassment issue on its head.
However, I'm just as guilty - I once said that I don't care who I sleep with, to have a go at flying a Chinook. Got no offers though so deal now withdrawn!
Cheers

Head, Whirls surely you get that, I mean for most women I know it's a given ........... which is why ratty was implying that it's not a very good pun to introduce into a sexual harrasment thread
