Fair Deal?

Here are three little Gems I have come across over the last three weeks.

1. A friends son left school a couple of years ago and has drifted from job to job. Eventually got a job at the SPAR shop on the camp and has just been asked if he would go to 'out East' for a two week stint. £3000.00 is the pay!

2. Mate at Ramstein has had his Afghanistan Det delayed three times because the Italian he is replacing is making so much money he wants to stay!

3. Slightly off tack but....my wifes friend has a son who is a Detective Constable. He came off 6 straight nights last week and was asked if he would do an extra night looking after a prisoner who had to spend the night in the station cells. He initially declined but changed his mind when offered £400.00 (Gross). This included overtime etc.

So, looking at the above I think it is fair to say that we in the Military have some scope for grievance when it comes to taking on the sh1tty end of the stick. If you could change the rules, especially for long and frequent dets in the sand, what would YOU consider a fair and honest package?

For me it would be suspension of UK Tax whilst out of area. An additional and decent daily bonus. Free telephone calls/internet access. A mandatory period between dets (12 months?).

I look at the salaries that the military (UK) get now, and am gobsmacked. When I was a junior sqn pilot (yes I know, grumpy old git), London busdrivers earnt more than an F4 jock. OK, so that wasn't right, but I think the pay now is very fair for the job! More than fair for some of those that haven't seen ops for donkey's years.

Apparently service pay is weighted against what a similar profession earns in civvy street.

MT driver on 2MT could be (rightly) compared to civvy Hoyer tanker drivers.

- Hoyer drivers earn about £23 grand a year basic, not including over-time for evenings and weekends.
- SAC drivers earn about £14500 a year basic, no more for over-time, very little more for being away getting shot at (20 mins phone call a week, less than a prisoner and a taxed LSA payment).

Also Hoyer drivers don't get told to told to guard the company HQ for 4 weeks a year (minimum).

Yes there are perks in the military but they are gradually being eaten away by the likes of Lean and 'career first sod the rest' minded officers.

Thats just the 'bottom of the ladder*', what about the disparity futher up the skill ladder. Hell even as a simple stacker I have an ADR/IATA accreditation that commands a minimum wage of between £27 - 32 grand (dependant on location) a year basic (hence the RAF and I parting company in the near future).

Wages may seem lovely in the RAF these days but incase you've not noticed the cost of living hasn't stayed still.

* No offence to MT personnel.

I'd be tempted to fly like I was going round a roundabout - in, out, in, out, in, out, in, out, in, and that's a grand thankyou!

The so called rational behind UK Forces not being allowed their earnings tax free on an op det is that apparantely we do better than the international average of Armed Forces in basic salary.
The 'old cherry' of an argument has been used by the AFPRB since tax free salaries were introduced by several overseas militaries after GW1 - it is now well out of date! We linger in the middle of salary scales for military forces and this is before the cost of living in UK is taken into account.
The real reason that we are not allowed tax free salaries on deployment is because of the 'Dartmouth reject' running the Treasury who has a hatred of anything military. I suggest you wake up and smell the coffee GB and your mate Tony Bliar, your troops are voting with their feet and you will soon be left with less people than ever before to deploy. Giving tax relief to those operationally deployed would widen the number of available personnel for a start (just watch - if this was announced the number of medically downgraded individuals who suddenly get better) and could even get some of those individuals who are too valuable in their appointment to be placed on a warning roster available. The cost to the UK would be minimal given the increase in the number of personnel available, and might even do something about retention.
And don't even get me started on supporting your people once they are deployed!

hmmm...

and a slight disparity from S_H, the list you have provided is for SAC(Tech) and Jnr Techs, the heading you provided gives it away.
THS's point applies to non-technical trade SACs. Try again, sir.

No, S_H's list is correct. His title may be a bit confusing but the same pay scale applies to LAC/SAC/SAC(Tech).

Have you SEEN some of the "maidens" in places we have to go?

I would settle for whatever I could "liberate", plus a pair of camels. One for trading, and one for replacing whatever it was we used to liberate maidens for.....

S_H

I stand erected

And owing to an argument in the office over the same subject, I also stand in fear for my life

And finally, yes I am addicted to these little smilie chappies
