Fair Deal?
Here are three little Gems I have come across over the last three weeks.
1. A friends son left school a couple of years ago and has drifted from job to job. Eventually got a job at the SPAR shop on the camp and has just been asked if he would go to 'out East' for a two week stint. £3000.00 is the pay! 2. Mate at Ramstein has had his Afghanistan Det delayed three times because the Italian he is replacing is making so much money he wants to stay! 3. Slightly off tack but....my wifes friend has a son who is a Detective Constable. He came off 6 straight nights last week and was asked if he would do an extra night looking after a prisoner who had to spend the night in the station cells. He initially declined but changed his mind when offered £400.00 (Gross). This included overtime etc. So, looking at the above I think it is fair to say that we in the Military have some scope for grievance when it comes to taking on the sh1tty end of the stick. If you could change the rules, especially for long and frequent dets in the sand, what would YOU consider a fair and honest package? For me it would be suspension of UK Tax whilst out of area. An additional and decent daily bonus. Free telephone calls/internet access. A mandatory period between dets (12 months?). |
US Troops do get extra pay and tax relief when in "hostile fire areas".
Some tax info.... http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/...101262,00.html Some pay info..... http://usmilitary.about.com/od/fy200.../combatpay.htm MRE's...ah yes....dontcha just love the Pork slices in Jamaican Spice Sauce? Earned the MRE's the real name...."Meals Rejected by Ethiopians" |
Can we also have a NAAFI/Spar/Whatever that charges the same as it does in the UK? Please pretty please with sugar on????
|
Not actaully been tagged to any US units when overseas but guys I know who have say you are very well looked after (except MRE's of course!).
South Bound. No chance with those kind of wage bills to fund.... |
Or a certain Ozzy GR4 mate who received $200 everytime he crossed the Kuwait/Iraq border during Telic.
Lucky Git!!! |
I look at the salaries that the military (UK) get now, and am gobsmacked. When I was a junior sqn pilot (yes I know, grumpy old git), London busdrivers earnt more than an F4 jock. OK, so that wasn't right, but I think the pay now is very fair for the job! More than fair for some of those that haven't seen ops for donkey's years.

MT driver on 2MT could be (rightly) compared to civvy Hoyer tanker drivers. - Hoyer drivers earn about £23 grand a year basic, not including over-time for evenings and weekends. - SAC drivers earn about £14500 a year basic, no more for over-time, very little more for being away getting shot at (20 mins phone call a week, less than a prisoner and a taxed LSA payment). Also Hoyer drivers don't get told to told to guard the company HQ for 4 weeks a year (minimum). Yes there are perks in the military but they are gradually being eaten away by the likes of Lean and 'career first sod the rest' minded officers. Thats just the 'bottom of the ladder*', what about the disparity futher up the skill ladder. Hell even as a simple stacker I have an ADR/IATA accreditation that commands a minimum wage of between £27 - 32 grand (dependant on location) a year basic (hence the RAF and I parting company in the near future). Wages may seem lovely in the RAF these days but incase you've not noticed the cost of living hasn't stayed still. * No offence to MT personnel. |
what would YOU consider a fair and honest package? ...and maidens :E |

Oldbeefs,
Wealth is not measured by the gold in yer pockets alone.....feeling that kick in your butt when you lit off the burners on the Phantom was probably worth a few Bob I bet! |
The so called rational behind UK Forces not being allowed their earnings tax free on an op det is that apparantely we do better than the international average of Armed Forces in basic salary.
The 'old cherry' of an argument has been used by the AFPRB since tax free salaries were introduced by several overseas militaries after GW1 - it is now well out of date! We linger in the middle of salary scales for military forces and this is before the cost of living in UK is taken into account. The real reason that we are not allowed tax free salaries on deployment is because of the 'Dartmouth reject' running the Treasury who has a hatred of anything military. I suggest you wake up and smell the coffee GB and your mate Tony Bliar, your troops are voting with their feet and you will soon be left with less people than ever before to deploy. Giving tax relief to those operationally deployed would widen the number of available personnel for a start (just watch - if this was announced the number of medically downgraded individuals who suddenly get better) and could even get some of those individuals who are too valuable in their appointment to be placed on a warning roster available. The cost to the UK would be minimal given the increase in the number of personnel available, and might even do something about retention. And don't even get me started on supporting your people once they are deployed! RDB :ugh: |
More of the usual from THS, please see below for SAC pay rates, higher band on left, and just for your benefit THS, the lower band on the right.
Aircraftmen SAC (Tech) & Junior Technician Level 9 25,794 21,597 Level 8 24,594 20,841 Level 7 23,535 19,929 Level 6 22,502 19,111 Level 5 21,458 18,345 Level 4 19,407 17,407 Level 3 18,049 16,005 Level 2 16,348 15,166 Level 1 14,323 14,323 S_H |
hmmm...
and a slight disparity from S_H, the list you have provided is for SAC(Tech) and Jnr Techs, the heading you provided gives it away. :D
THS's point applies to non-technical trade SACs.:ok: Try again, sir. |
No, S_H's list is correct. His title may be a bit confusing but the same pay scale applies to LAC/SAC/SAC(Tech).
See here http://www.rafcom.co.uk/pay_allowanc...raf_air_06.cfm |
Spot on Stuff. It is confusing, but the link shows it properly.
