As much as I agree with the Queens Birthday Flypast, I disagree with losing other sorties to accomodate it. I dont want to go into any great detail but with all the overstretch / lack of availability it's a question of priorities. Seems to me that losing face by not being there is more important in some airships eyes.

Balbo - now there's an evocative word I haven't heard for many years. Any thoughts on its derivation, anyone? Or it's spelling?

Balbo was an Italian AF general who led a large trans-Atlantic formation of flying boats to America in, I think, late 1920s.

Gee Ram,Thanks for that photo. As a child I lived about 3 miles finals to Northolt and I vividly remember one such flypast in the 70s, with a group of about 6 -8 delta wing aircraft in formation to the south. I could swear Concorde was amongst them as well. For all the detractors, I say wind yer neck in. It was an event such as that in the 70s that stimulated my interest in aviation. These public demonstrations are important not just as a national demonstration of pride but a very good way of recruiting young men and women into a career in the Armed Forces. Yes there is lots of stretch but if the day comes when we are unable to publically display pride in our equipment and demonstrate the skill of our men and women then we should all pack up and just ride around in Toyota Hilux with AK47s. We are better than that. Anyone see the Massed Bootie band on BBC2 between the matches?

If you got to www.britishpathe.com, and put RAF Odiham in search then the Coronation Review, including the flypast, is the first film to come up. Free to download after a bit of tedious form filling. Run time is about 10min.

Just trying to weigh up which sounded best 16 Lincolns (of the 45 in the flypast) or the nine Shacks. Lovely.

Thanks for the info on Balbo - it didn't occur to me to Google for it. But a bit in the biography tickled me:

'He went through a crash course of flying instruction....'

Who writes this stuff?

Snap.......
Now, it's interesting you say this, as you are the first person outside myself, my Mum and my parents old next door neighbours that have mentioned the Concorde in a Trooping Flypast.
I saw it, the formation flew right over our house, Concorde prototype surrounded by a hoard of shiney Lightnings .........but I have not as yet ever been able to confirm it happened.
Even Ed Durham of the Lightning pilots association has drawn a blank so far.
I reckon it was either 1970 or 1971 when it happened, as the next door neighbour (and ex-WW2 Spitfire pilot) moved away in early 1972, and it's very unlikely to have been 1969 as it was too soon after the first flight of Concorde. I'd favour 1970 as this would tie in with the published photographs of 16 Lightnings taking off from Watty for the Trooping Flypast.
Still can't believe there are no photos or any Watty ex-Lightning pilots from 1970-71 around to confirm it or say I (we) imagined it all..............

1971 is a good bet as I vividly remember decimalisation as well. Whatever, I am sure I saw it.

Here's a link to an official CAA publication for anyone wanting to know the exact flypast details. Seems as though after Buckingham Palace, aircraft will continue to Northolt so as not to disrupt much Heathrow Traffic, then route to Brize to disperse.

No Harriers today due to single-engine rules and negative glide performance, makes sense to me...!

Good show chaps

The pics from the Lanc were superb (lump in throat as usual).

For those who object all I can say is that if we can't uphold our traditions then what the hell is it all about ?

Would like to have seen some Alberts and a few whirling wings, but perhaps that actually made the point about overstretch in a subtle way.

Thankyou to all involved, this taxpayer appreciated the effort.

Not too good at lip-reading but I think HM turned to the D of E as the Tornado nine-ship went over and said: "That's my Marham boys".

Perhaps a lip reader could elucidate?

Good effort anyway, especially liked the single-seat gun fighters eg, Spits , Hurris and Jags.

The lump in my throat was in spasm from the Trooping of the Colour to the Reds and the Canberra. It was what little boys, and grown military men, who are still boys, thrive on. It was a show that stirred the deepest emotions. It was just great for the tingles we must have now and then!

Well said Pop, I know what you mean as I grew up with the Pongo's. Dad was in the Guards then flew with AAC later in his army career flying state of the art machinery such as the Sioux

We really are lucky to have kept our heritage intact on this little bundle of islands.

Thank goodness we still have the Crown. God forbid that our people should ever be expected to touch their forelocks to El Presidente Bliar

The Taffs did very well, particularly when considering that they've been East of Suez until quite recently.
