Banter-heavy zone

The Lynx may not provide much of an increase in aviation lift capability but, at least during colder spells and at the lower levels, it will be able to provide fast-reaction armed support. Well, not that fast but faster than the AH awaiting spares from Wastelands. And come to think of it, I'm not sure there are any TOW equipped Lynx left. Or a/c commanders qualified and current. It's still more fun to fly than a bus!
And whilst I don't want to get too involved in inter-service banter, the point about "The Army can't do its job without SH" - duh! What do you think the SH force is there to do????

I would recommend a book called "Lions donkeys and dinosaurs" by an ex-Navy chap by the name of Lewis Page. Very interesting stuff and all this service rivalry is put into sharp focus. Anyway.....

There is of course another route to take - qualify for pension, sneak out the back door and get a job where no-one shoots at you! (Except for Air Ambulance work in and around Nottingham)..... now where did I put that flak jacket?

What problems ?

Having operated Lynx at 3000ft and +35-40 I think you underestimate the poor beast. What starts to eat into its capability is when you have wedge extra kit onto it. This weighs the same as the kit placed on a chinook but is a huge percentage of AUM on a Lynx.

Love to get hold of a Chinook ODM and find out how much performance you loose to temperature in percentage of AUM terms. Being such an old aircraft I bet its worse than most other JHC platforms.

Lynx will be buzzing around above truck convoys providing eyes and close in protection. Running specialist all over the place etc etc. Same as we were doing in Bosnia before the chinook even thought about coming into theatre....

Oh and BTW most Lynx crews are FAC trained powerful friends when you need them.

You've struck at the very heart of the lynx's problem-it's had to be upgraded with so much kit to remain viable in a threat environment that it's rapidly running out of performance to achieve anything. Great cab for what it was designed for-looking for and killing the godless hordes in the central plains of Germany, but stick on armour/DAS etc (and don't bother to remove redundant systems and wiring because it costs $$$) and then send it to the top RH corner of the ODM-what do people expect? Your also right when you suggest that the Chinook loses performance in spades h&h, but it gets by with some common sense (ie limiting troop numbers / USLs) and education of the crews (it's very easy hovering on one donk at ISA / sea level with 5T of disposable, not so easy at 5000'/40 degrees). The bottom line is that the Chinook goes because it has so much power to burn it can do something worthwhile in theatre with restricted power, other platforms may not. I'm afraid that I'm in the camp that suggests that Lynx is going to justify FLynx. However before we in crabfat are too critical we must accept that we've done exactly the same thing over the years, eg not deploying Jag on Telic (in case it worked too well and endangered TypHoon) and so do the navy (why send an Amphib Task Group to invade a country with 12 miles of coast?). The bottom line is good luck to anyone going out, make sure you study the ODM and don't be afraid to say no when some idiot reads a planning figure out of the staff handbook and can't understand why you can't lift 54 troops for 150 miles!!!! Fly safe everyone!
