???

What on earth? Since when do they cancel IOTs? For what reason?

Undersubscribed perhaps? I only ask since I was planning on being on it...

Actually over subscription is more likely.

If, say, all the pilot slots further up the line are spoken for and there is a significant number on hold then Stop the Pilots.

Ditto all the other branches.

There is a risk (slight) that you will wander off and join something else rather than be bound to HM. Also it is quite likely that you may be given the shilling and sent off to do some adventure training. Just a guess this.

The course has been binned or postponed to allow the introduction of a different syllabus. It has been explained to me, but I can't remember the details (brain knackered after the ASACS Trappers visit today)

Ooooo, a change of syllabus? Lovely! I'm guessing this is so that they can introduce more basket weaving, tree hugging and various other elements of triv that will never be used. I'm fairly certain that I got more out of 3 weeks at the Purple school than I ever did out of my time at Sleaford Tech

So is this the dreaded 9 month course we've all heard so much about or just a rebranding exercise?

It may involve mincing about more, doing less work, being easier, and giving evern more sypathy to biffs and morons who can't pass the course. As is, it is too soft and involves too much PC to produce a true fighting force. Or am I just disillusioned by some of the people i've seen graduate recently.............

Another syllabus eh? Well, I suppose that the last one had a good 10 year run.

I was a flt cdr 83-85 and started with the old, old syllabus. Along with Neil Hutchinson (still in and a Wg Cdr) and a couple of others we started off the revised, macho, recourse course. Introduced lots of sensible things like TACEVAL type scenarios, flexibility, and stuff much more aligned to the real Air Force. Oh, and we also did away with foot and leg problems. It was amazing what cadets can do when they are given a proper challenge. Anyway by 1992 (I think) the Recourse Squadron had been wound up (lovely final dining in night at Sleaford Tech - except the the few original flt and sqn cdrs who turned up didn't get a mention at all) on the grounds that it was so successful at turning Comprehensive School wimps into RAF officers that they decided to make it the main course.

The one thing that we seemed to have very little impact on though was the standard of English. God only knows what the schools were teaching kids but some of them hardly knew how to write their own language. Don't suppose it's changed that much!

How history turns. Ah, happy days!

allan907,
I was one of those comprehensive wimps and was also one of the first students on recourse flight back in april 84, as you say a far more sensible way of training.

Ended up back there as a Flt Cdr 10 years later and surprise surprise we had a syllabus re-write (course increase 18-24 weeks) and the introduction of ??? Yes you've guessed it recourse flight.

Hi Oakworth!

Were you one of my cadets? Click on my profile and email me if you were.

Allan,

yes I was one of yours, I've e-mailed you.

One of the grown up activities we undertook was to give a 'for and against' presentation on the miners strike. If you remember it was a no holds barred event that saw us being given a day off to go and stand on the picket line in South Yorkshire and talk to the miners.

Training Officers to see both sides of the argument, rather than take the Torygraph line, never catch on!

Chances of that happening today, yeah right!

Right Stuff,

I've also heard about the new 9 month course.

I was told about it while I was at Honnington, and from what I heard, its gonna include more ground defence training and the like...

Though I could be wrong, as at the time information was scarce!!

I've heard something of the new course, having just left cranditz, but am not sure if it will increase in length. I do believe that the idea is to let the studes run the course a bit more and give them more interaction with SNCO's. By giving the studes more responsibility they hope it will be a bit more realistic to what will happen to them after grad.

More contact with SNCOs? Sleaford Tech would never let that happen. Might poison the young impressionable JOs with sensible ideas! Hmmm, more ground defence training...would that be extra lessons on how to put up a 12x12 so that we don't have to do that module on IDT anymore???

While I don't dispute the course structure changing, something tells me the cancellation is not for this reason - April '05 course has also been pulled. Is this the beginning of the major cutbacks we've all heard so much about?

Would they have to reduce the amount of courses if it were to be 9 months, but have more studes on each course perhaps??

BigCheese1, just spoke to a mate who is a IOT Flt Cdr. Says that there is a distinct lack of cadets at the moment anyway (didn't say which branches), due to the inability to get people to recruit. This means the general course size at IOT is much less than the usual 100 or so.

How the hell have they managed to stretch the original 18 week course into 32 weeks and 3 'terms'? 14 weeks leave?

IOT Recourse Sqn

As IOT flt cdr 84-87 (Recourse Sqn 86-87) I can say that the Recourse Sqn format had a great deal to commend it. Several of the recoursees indeed had problems; however, many were recoursed because their flt cdrs on the Main course had not liked the 'cut of their gib'; indeed, one of the best leaders to come through (now doing well in the Tornado world), had been told by his young and inexperienced female flt cdr that his Yorkshire accent just did not sound 'officer-like', an unkind cut, and made even more so by the fact that he came from Lancashire anyway!!

Another cadet, a natural leader and one of the best cadets (including my Sword and Sash winners) I ever saw throughout my 3 years at IOT, had been told by his flt cdr (a Regt officer) that he was too quiet; what a mistake!

Many, indeed most, cadets arrived on the Recouse Sqn with their confidence shattered; the programme was designed to build up their confidence - and not in a PC way - and develop their talents; this it did with great success thereby saving some good officers for the RAF which otherwise we would have been lost.

I'd forgotten all about the miner's strike bizzo. You're dead right - perhaps it wouldn't happen nowadays. Probably shouldn't have happened then - you might have all come back communists!! I'll put it down to one of my more whimsical moments.

Mind you, things have changed. No more miners; RAF? going....going..........
