FJJP,

To save everyone else asking, just what the f**k is the point of this thread?

PS Mr Moderator, please get rid of this thread

Yeller, no need to get abrasive. I think that FJJP has started the thread to get "war stories" similar to that of the Vulcan thread and the Canberra thread. There is nothing wrong with that, provided it is as interesting as the Vulcan and the Canberra offerings.

Oh, FJJP, I didnt fly the Nimrod, much too big, too many engines and besides, you couldnt hover it ...................Fly Army!!

P.S Yeller, did you fly the Canberra, Vulcan and/or the Nimrod??

Kenny,

Yes thanks ......

I just think that the original post could have been more constructive in what it was trying to get people to say or write about. Not suggesting anything from FJJP, but others have been known to pose similar questions on a "fishing trip"

Yeller, let me assure you that FJJP has no need to go "fishing". If he wants to, I'll let him explain what I mean. Hope you didnt take offense at my response.

Yeller_Gait.

Do you know FJJP? I can tell you however, that he has flown both the Nimrod and the Vulcan and if he wants to start a thread on the former I have no intention of getting rid of it.

Just look at the quality of the Vulcan and Canberra threads. Take a moment to reflect. Then see that we all live in the past with our memories and wish to hear about the memories of others. Simple really.

Hey guys, let's calm this one down. (Thanks for the support, by the way...) Yeller, I apologise, and your right about people on fishing expeditions. However, I have flown many hours on the Nimrod and thought it would be interesting to forum readers to get a taste of life on the fleet in the same way that interesting stories come out of the Vulcan and Canberra threads. I am sure the degree of interest will find its own level, so I will let this one run its course for now.

Now FJJP isn't that much better. We all now know what you wish this thread to be about - why couldn't have this been done from post No1?

BTW I have no Nimrod experience apart from watching them go round in circles inside D807

Wink

Yes I flew the Nimrod and I'd still be flying them if they hadn't disbanded 42 Sqn and expected me to move to the land of the deep fried Mars Bar! I suppose we should have seen it coming, the construction of a new simulator building is always the kiss of death!!!

As for war stories, hmmm can't ever remember us getting up to anything out of the ordinary ;-)

As I said to Kenny in a PM, unfortunately most of the interesting things that happened in my time up north came under the "detachement rules" banner, and are therefore not available for public perusal.

I will have a think and see if I can come up with something interesting that can be said in public

I flew the Nimrod. I flew for 8+ hours, once, and landed at the same place from where I took off. Or did I do that more than once?

Kippermate

I can beat that, I once did a Tapestry over 9hrs (a Mk1) and was supposed to land at Leuchars for the airshow, guess what we landed back at ISK.

On another occasion same type of trip I did actually Landed at Leuchars after 9 and a bit to get there, guess how long to get home.....25 minutes

And finally how about Lossiemouth to Kinloss direct from the short runway at Lossy, less than 5 minutes Tarmac to Tarmac.
The Eng reckoned 3 minutes, we had to 5 in the book.

I can beat that - Alconbury to Wyton - 2mins 25 secs! Still, 5 mins in the book! Drat, looking for zero flight time!

I believe the 0 min log book entry can be done from Kinloss to Lossie (or vice versa of course). Believe a few of the old boys at ISK have done it.

Sorry, Santiago, I have to disagree. By convention in the RAF, times are to the nearest 5 mins; therefore a 4 min flight in the auth sheets would be entered as 5 mins. As would any time less than five mins, including 2 m 25s! Whether you choose to enter zero mins in your log book or not, I guess is up to the Sqn policy; all Sqns I've been on insist that auth sheets and logbooks match.

Unless, of course, the roolz have changed in the last couple of years???

Waddo 21 to CGY 08 in time zero on the flying triangle.

Yes I did fly the Nimrod. Difference between the Vulcan thread and the Nimrod one is that the Nimrod is still operational. Yes we can read about SOSUS on the internet but what was it really used for ....

Then again when we saw a Russian MAY. Bit of a ROUGH sortie that one.

Then there were all sorts of ruses we got up to to try and win the game. One was the three pass limit for photographs of the Russian ships. Port - bow/stern - starboard. Nice pilot handling exercise and good snaps.

One day, the Sorum tug on the Shetlands. "Port side" - "Roger - 3 shots taken"

Round we went, running in, "stern to bow - no wake" "Roger - port side 3 shots taken"

Round again for the bow shot. "Running in" "Roger - port side 3 shots taken"

Each time the sod had turned on a 6 pence and presented the port side to us. Now the Ruskies were known to comlain if we exceed ed the 3 shot limit but we figured that as we had only photographed ONE side of the boat we were allowed two more goes.

Round we went and once again PORT side. Clearly they were trying to hide something.

Round again and once again they spun on a six pence. As we came up we rolled over the top and got a vert of the starboard side.

She waved at us from the bridge.

Did you mean FLY Nimrods or FLY ON Nimrods?

Santiago15
No, you need the 5 minutes to get the checks done - ie, After take offs - walk round - pre landers etc. OK?

Bluetail - Mk1 SAR - 10hrs 25min on 84k fuel load! Landed with 1000lbs unusable and some in the 4A tanks!

buoy 15 - fair question. Like the Vulcan and Canberra topics, there is likely to be a wealth of stories/experiences out there; many people connected with the Nimrod could have an interesting tale to tell, be they aircrew or groundcrew. Tragedy, humour, lessions to be learned - let's have them all!

FJJP - Yes, logbooks and auth sheets are still supposed to match. However, despite the fact that we now seem to have more Sqn Execs than operators, when was the last time anyone had their logbook cross checked against the auth sheets for accuracy (maybe a trappers visit?)?. I expect most people could write anything in their log book (provided it looked reasonable) and get away with it these days, including a zero minutes flight!

P.S I heard recently that the Aussies log flights to the nearest 6 minutes, i.e .1 of an hour. Thus flights are say 2.4 hrs, 1.3 etc, and adding up your log book is so much easier, saves a fortune in snowpake! Cn anyone confirm this?
