jrsk,

No call when you are shortlisted, just an email eventually offering you a selection of interview dates, unless they need to question anything on your application.

I guess I just have to be patient now....

I flew emirates last week for business. Yes, i have changed careers and am in the process of making my new career very lucrative. As i was flying through dubai, i had a chance to speak with a few pilots from emirates. To my surprise, every single pilot i met hated EK. I even met one person who was there for 6 months and he was even planning on leaving.

I know it is bad there and you have my profound sympathies; is it really that intollerable? Even the cabin crews were complaining. I normally fly business class but i notice the service has decreased immensely. Even the poor chap that was sitting next to me expressed the same views.

Keep your heads up gents, the economies throughout the world is vastly improving.

Hey Forum newbie, be honest. You had an interview in 2008 and got turned down. The career change is due to everyone else seeing the same potential as EK. You are a little bitter so we can take your views with a large pinch of salt.

flybywire44 14th Feb 2011 14:43

@JRSK:

You should be offered an interview within the next two weeks. I submitted my application and two weeks later they offered me an interview in DXB.

Some people love and others dislike EK. I think you need to decide if you can stand missing the hiring wave in the US. If you go to EK now you'll miss out on US Airline seniority.

I would think that pay and QOL at EK will have to improve as the pilot shortage sets in. I may be wrong, but pilots will become an even more valuable commodity in the middle east. :D

fliion 14th Feb 2011 14:52

Forum newbie,

Whatever pilots think about EK...I have yet to meet any of my colleagues that would be unprofessional enough to tell a Biz class pax that they 'hate' EK..

I call BS...1oo%

Move on to your ...ahem lucrative career....and remember...truth and integity is a foundation for success.

You did'nt make the grade at EK...nor now in the legitimacy dept.

sad

Interview Prep

Hello everyone,

Any suggestion about Where would you get the best interview prep?

Thanks for the inputs.

Any Good or Balanced feed back?

Hi,

I have been offered an interview but there seems to be ALOT of negative comments on here.

Are there any guys out there who are working for Emirates who can give us a balanced view of life in Dubai and with Emirates?

The good points as well as the bad.

YYZ 21st Feb 2011 15:10

If you browse this forum you will find bad things said about every airline in the world, and some good? People (especially pilots) moan about their terms and conditions constantly, its part of the job description.

The only suggestion i have is read through this forum carefully and go for the interview and whilst there interview them as much as they do you, and try talk to some pilots whilst there?

I have friends there and im starting there soon, there are good and bad points, depends on what you have at the moment and where you want to be in 5/10 years time?

Good luck

Dear YYZ guy,

Can you please post your opinions a year from now after you truly begin to understand things? I will guarantee that you will have changed your mind about this job and this place.

I do not mean to sound condescending, just that I was once like you... rationalizing things... but at some point you will reach the same conclusions as me.

This company will treat you like ****e, you will work harder than is reasonable and you will gradually loath many aspects of this society and this job.

Are any of you guys watching the news surrounding the ME and North Africa? This situation is far worse than either of the Gulf Wars and if you think you will not suffer the consequences once you arrive, then you are sadly mistaken.

Almost every pilot I know, either is blindly hoping for the best, or they are activiely making their 'exit' plans. It's about 50/50 there.

YYZ 22nd Feb 2011 16:00

I appreciate your comments however all i basically said was go and make your own decisions whilst assessing the place for yourself.

I have done this and since ive accepted, things have got drastically worse in the ME etc which may of swayed my decision if im honest, im still watching the news now and I could still pull out?

Im hoping my experience will be different to yours once/if im there, as said, many bad things said about EK, but the same was said for my past company and ive never had a problem there for four years?

ICAO ATPL and Class 1 Medical

Anyone know if its possible to attend the selection for emirates with a UK medical and an Irish license. Working for some irish operator that made me get an irish license or pay 45 euro extra a month but I have been getting my medicals done in the UK.
The emirates email I received says 'ICAO ATPL and Class 1 Medical must both be issued by the same country' but Im sure at a recent road show they said it didnt have to be?

Just wondering if anyone has had the same problem?

Cheers

YYZ 23rd Feb 2011 08:39

My old Doc used to issue CAA medicals and simply cross out CAA and put IAA there stating he has run out of the irish, this has not been mentioned nor does it seem to be a problem?

You could always email your co-ordinator to check though?

Medical also needs to be valid 3 months after the date of joining so if you are due to renew prior to joining then ensure you get an irish one from Doc Orton just to be on the safe side.

ICAO ATPL and Class 1 Medical

Although they state that they want the license and medical from the same country, they really mean from the same regulatory authority. As you know, an ATPL is validated by class 1 medical. As I understand it, any JAR medical can validate any JAR ATPL. Of course the medical has to refer to the ATPL license number.

Also be aware that the Airbus is the only offer for anyone with Airbus or any other type except Boeing, they are very short on the Airbus fleet and Boeing is most peoples preference.

Boeing type rated Pilots will get the 777.

I decided against the Airbus after speaking with crew and seeing some rosters, they are horrendous. Even the EK doctor who did my medical told me to "avoid the 330".

They wont offer the 777, so my application is closed. Its their way or the highway, there is no negotiating with these people, so don't bother asking.

Happy with my decision, as Id rather have my health based on the info I sourced.

Good luck

A330

Dear colleagues,

EK invited me for interview. I fly A320. As far as Iīm informed, theyīll put me onto the A330 in case I get through the process.

May I ask some questions?

How many years do I have to stay on the A330 - I read about the roster?

Can you applicate for an other type after a while - A340 A380 B777?

Do you become captain only on a type you flew as FO?

Thanks.

Dear Sittingidly, dear colleagues,

What do you think will be the consequences? I have no idea. I got an invitation.

Completly disagree. I think the wealthy oil nations will prosper more than ever and those with the means in the region will choose to live in a place like Dubai.

Life boat 9th Mar 2011 07:52

BananaAir,

Excuse my ignorance, but what exactly changes around March.

Are you implying that if you joined in Feb. then things will be different.

How long will it take then if I elect to join in August.

Why is it that everybody is so obsessed with time to upgrade, is it the money,
it it peoples ego or is it something else.

I have been a captain for the last 5 years, albeit on 737-800, but changing from the right hand seat to the left hand seat, really isnīt all itīs cracked up to be.

A stable job, with the chance to spend time with your family, really has itīs merits....., even as a first officer.

Best regards,
Life boat

Easy Ryder 10th Mar 2011 11:13

In the past, pilots left good airlines (but with long times to command) to get a quicker upgrade here.

I think now most people are joining to have a stable job, time to command isn't as big an issue as it used to be. Still important though!
