Ben, relax buddy...... God you boys are sensitive aren’t you? It’s ok as long as the 320 gets smashed left right and centre but god forbid we bring up a mishap in the elite squadron and everyone starts crying foul. Was it or wasn’t a complete failure to follow simple SOP in Manila? If the answer is yes relaxed my friend (learn to take one on the chin man, its ok) if it wasn’t then I guess I owe you and your sensitive side an apology.
As always Safe Flying :ok: and keep the blue stuff up and the brown stuff down
P.S. how do you know that I suck? I didn’t know we were that intimate!:=

yes, you can in Mumbai TMA only Class C Airspace no spd rest :ugh:

I have to agree, what is the big deal, all these guys wetting their pants over 320 knots at 3000 feet. If the controller said keep your speed up, whoopy, have fun. I must be getting old, because if we could do it, we would do it. It used to be a time, when jetA was cheap that many airlines flew barber pole, high speed climb, and descent when able.

Yep, those were the days, 340kts to fifteen mile final, thrust idle, gear, flap and be stable at 1000ft. Kept the hear rate up. We have all turned into a wet lettuces.

If the company SOP is to fly 250kts below 5000ft and be full stabilised by 1500ft, why don't you just do it? If ATC give free speed or high speed, it's 250kts below 5000ft end of story.

That is the whole point of this thread. If Folks wanna be yahoos and go tearing around at 320 knots below 5000', they are more than welcome. But let them do it in their own a/c or in a company that does not have such a height/ speed restriction.

Follow the rules, they are usually right.

It depends on where you are flying into. 250 kts is a legal requirement of the SIDs/STARs in Dubai for example.
This restriction is part of the textual description of the SIDs/STARs in the UAE AIP.

The FO should have intervened!

Just because it's the CA's last day does not mean he can start breaking the rules in the book. I distinctly remember another scenario in an A320 where the Captain came in high, hot, and fast, 300+ knots below 10,000 ft (against their book), too high, and at a low altitude requested an orbit to lose altitude (another against the book thing), got spatially disoriented, and crashed the A320 in the water, killing everybody on board near Bahrain Airport. FO, hired at Gulf Air with about 200 hours, and roughly 400 hours A320 time, did not have the time/knowledge/experience to check his Captain and put a stop to the dangerous sh*t the Captain was doing.

I really do not see the advantage of going that fast. There are many small reasons not to do it, and if you put them all together there is a potential thingsget out of hand.

There is no doubth that the margin for error is smaler and that because of this you may upset your collegue.

Having said so I think you should be able to do it. One day you might need it.

So to practise it from time to time is not a bad idea but under strict conditions.

Cabin ready for ldg; approach x-list completed and a margin build in i.e. you know what to do and do it quickly when you see that the margin is melting away.

But never upset your collegue and realize that they will not always object.

Deliberate and unjustified SOP violations should not be condoned. If his ass was on fire and had to get the thing down in a hurry I don’t think anyone would have complained.

Do not try and tell us that having taken all the variables into account, flying an aircraft within its certified limits is unsafe or unprofessional. There is nothing wrong with a 300kt + descent, or requesting an orbit on the odd occasion you cock it up and need to lose a bit of height. If you get disorientated doing so maybe you need to get a job driving a bus of a different kind.

SOPS need to cater for the lowest common denominator and as a result you end up with silly restrictions and 950 page OMAs.

Just a sign of things to come with all the “PROJECT X” flying schools out there these days.

Somebody needs to conduct an energy management class on this thread..Unless you're flying the space shuttle columbia and dead stickin it to the ground..320 kts at 3000' seems a bit much on a commercial airliner assuming you're probably no more than 12 to 15 miles from landing at that altitude...but hey, to each his own i guess..just hope im not in that deck..:eek:

TO the guy that made the comment about flying like an F15. Dude you would have to be doing over 500kts to even be considered, and more like 300AGL. What a joke, do you configure like 30 miles out from the airport too? I am so sick of all these wussies afraid to fly the plane at the barber pole. Im a 737 guy, so don't know much about Airbus, but give me a break. The best way to save fuel would be a flight to the absolute minimum distance required to descend, and then an idle thrust descent at max forward speed all the way to final. But ofcourse everyone is afraid of doing over 300kts.

I used to come in at 370KIAS on the Falcon 2000EASy into Delhi, intercept the loc from 8 miles out, gear first, then flaps and spbrk ofcourse. Save time, and was fun. Oh i forgot, flying isnt supposed to be fun, we have rules!!!

yeah have fun but did anyone think of the possibility of "bird impact speed limitations" ( i'm not an A320 driver but you will find it as a limitation in some aircraft flight manuals).., rough air/ turbulence/ holding/go around/ change of plans..etc you can still have fun in an aircraft but exercise your professionalism and common sense if you have any.. and think of the people behind you..
