I did 8 years as a DEC with EK. I joined with my eyes open, I had done my research and it was pretty much what I was expecting - a pure business transaction between employer and employee. I have had several expat jobs, all with airlines flying similar equipment to EK and I enjoyed working for EK the least - exactly as I expected to. But, EK served its purpose for me and I believe that I served my purpose for EK. The people I worked with (of all nationalities and cultures) were generally fine but there were a few interesting characters in management and training who were best avoided. I was one of many pilots made Covid-19 redundant - just 2 years before I had planned on retiring anyway, so it has worked out fine for me. Being retired, I obviously won't have the option to go back to EK but if I did, would I? No, I am glad I joined EK and I did have a few good times but EK served its purpose for me and we move on. It is hard work and a younger and fitter man's job imho. The problem then comes when you wish to leave and realise that to return 'home' in your 40s or 50's you will probably have to do so at the bottom of a long seniority list. I think that may be why so many older guys who might have options (some don't) choose to remain in EK for as long as they can. The money is ok but it doesn't buy happiness and divorce is expensive! Others can reflect on my thoughts and ignore or take note as they choose. Not looking for a fight.

Just cabin crew (and some pilots) having fun in the sun at the annual Pride down unda. It burns management’s ring when they see crew actually enjoying themselves on a layover (sic)

I’ve heard warnings (and for some interestingly minor infringements)are liberally being given out for cabin crew. If you’re on a warning no bonus (profit share) so it seems to be the new plan for cabin services to put fear back into cabin crew. Newbies “who gives a f**k” attitude has nullified crew services power and control!

have on good authority that in October emirates made their biggest monthly profit ever!

I couldn’t give a rats pyjamas if they made all the money in the world.
In the last 12 months, it has become a vile and hateful place to live and work.
I’ve certainly noticed a gargantuan increase in the number of cars on the road. Making driving in Dubai about as stressful and as dangerous as ever.
I’ve found at work the atmosphere has become something akin to walking on eggshells. A genuine lack of experienced pilots joining with whom you cannot have any sort of conversation for fear of insulting or offending their fragile personalities.
And of course the cabin crew, who are stressed beyond belief and are functioning in a state of fear and adrenaline.

I'm delighted that the new cabin crew are finally seeing EK in its true form. Good for them coming for a few weeks to Dubai and pulling the plug when they’ve had enough of the rubbish!
Is that time of the year already? Where we start telling each other about how we know someone who heard we are getting 24 weeks bonus? Pathetic! Wear your hat or you won’t get the profit share!

I saw a screenshot from crew2crew about a cabin crew who didn’t smile at a passenger. Got reported and pulled into the office, got terminated! Probably more to the story but I’m inclined to believe it. Place has gone to the dogs lately!

I think we need to be honest, these reports are not merely "not smiling to a customer" or "having fun on layovers". The recent reports are for more serious events that took place during a recent layover, for those of you that know what I am talking about would understand that it is not comfortable to talk about what exactly happened in here. A small group of Romanians and polish cc tend to get out of control, and I am not talking about only going out for few drinks. With that being said the evilness of some management in Emirates is beyond what I would have ever expected, British and Australians are to blame here and sorry to point the finger at them but it is the truth.

It makes me laugh when posters state that EK has gone to the dogs recently …

Try from 2004 onwards kids. It’s the same old message that’s being spouted. Everyone turns up thinking that somehow they’re different and EK will be the land of milk and honey for them. Doesn’t take long for egos to get bruised over there.

Have you been in EK for 20+ years? Mate, seriously, why? Not being funny but the idea of spending 20 years breathing dust and dealing with the people there is soul destroying.

I see you're from Australia, or your profile says you are based there. Regarding your comment, who do you think is it to blame? If you go to Australia you will find the exact same attitude believe me, it is very easy to blame Italian, Arabs, French in Emirates. The problem is the backstabbing attitude of the Brits and Australians working there, full stop.

Can't argue with that at all to be honest. I’m talking in general about Dubai. Whenever you have to deal with anything, be it a bank, DU, follow up on medical issues, it becomes a nightmare. I’m not talking about the Italians, French or Arabs, (who for the most part live in a distorted reality anyway). It’s the ladies and gents who come from a place not far from the Middle East. Those who have perfected the art of taking out of both sides of their mouths. The fantastic driving we see on a daily basis. It’s descended into near total chaos. Emails that don’t get replied to, requests that get ignored at HQ. It’s complete sole destruction.

I’ve been reliably informed you can expect a reply from HQ in about 7 days! Tthat’s the norm.
i generally wait a month then send a reminder!
They (HQ minions) spend most of their time chatting and doing costa runs, anything to use up the time!
I think I still have famous text from EVP ? telling HQ staff not to do meetings at costa.

I was unfortunate enough to visit the medical department in HQ in the early morning. Watching the “minions” trying to operate the elevators was comical.

The “no meetings in costa” came from AAR.

Interesting rumours:

- ek (plus some other airlines) pushing for A380 production line to start up again
- landing gear strut crack repair requires 100 days for repairs (ek pushing airbus to help with cost etc!)

The A380-line is gone. The hangars are used for A321-production.
