To connect the Kai Tak observation with the "very different airline back then":
I joined EK with 216 hours on anything bigger than a King Air.
I upgraded less than four years later.
My first experience of the Kai Tak checkerboard was my second flight after upgrade.

It would never happen now. There would be a FCOM supplementary procedure 10 pages long detailing how to plan and brief the approach, which modes to use, plus a special cref briefing attached to the Gabi, plus a few FCI's yadda yadda yadda.......

yadda, yadda, yadda .... and with even more outside reference, like Mrs. Wong's washing line and Mr. Hop Sin's wok, to be compared with EK special ops inside reference, imagine a 10 page CCI how to extensively brief, rebrief and use 3 sloppy, home made EK charts simultaneously. Naturally all GCAA, EASE, FAA approved and #meetoo conform .......

So it looks like a reduction in capacity to a city that has always been regarded as one of our more lucrative destinations. I am struggling to see how this is positive news and that is with my rose tinted specs on!
Lack of beluga crews. From March or April a few patterns operated by the Beluga will be operated for six to twelve weeks by the tractor. When one pattern returns another will be rotated out. Could be up to three at a time. This is even after all the trans Tasmin flying stops and saves crews. The 207 is rumoured to make a return once crew numbers are fixed. With recruiting going so well it shouldn't take too long to fix right? Maybe some lucky tractor drivers given a move to the flagship as well. Should go really smoothly.

Regarding the EWR hotel locale.
There is an excellent diner called The Colonial, about 6 bucks in an Uber, free coffee all day and free wifi.
Nice folk too.
Its not much but its better than the hotel!
