smoke hood work as they supposed to.... maybe not...

Saturday AS wrote in his Email that the smoke hoods worked as they should and basically blames the cabin crew for not being able to use the smoke hood properly and as per the book....

Funny.. two days later the verdict is, that there are a batch of oxygen generators faulty......

situation changed quite quickly....

And the first person off the airplane was a Grade 2.
So we have 4-5 FAs that couldn't put on their smoke hoods for whatever reason.
One that was the first one in the terminal and 25% of them fail their SEP.
Makes one feel real confident to fly EK.
Why don't they do one of two things;
Either hire competent FAs or train the ones that want to stay with EK. We all know they way the company treats them (like all its employees) that only the 3rd world wants to stay but this is getting scary. Where is the GCAA?

@Neptune Spear

Thats a really broad brush you use to paint the third worlders as you call them. For your information, even they are utterly frustrated with EK, and some of them have bailed out and others are planning their exit. It's always comforting to know how competency in EK is automatically tied to where you come from and not how professionaly you perform your duties as an individual.

How professionally you perform your duties as an individual is a combination of where you come from ("environment"), education and the training EK gives you. Assuming EK are not hiring complete idiots (hmm...) then it is the last of these that is letting the side down. I think the problem is that they are hiring so many cabin crew these days the training college is just a production line.

I have a problem with the generaliztion, so you think all western educated people are smart? that's a very narrow minded look at the world.

There are people who recieve their foundation education in third world "environment" and still turn out to be better professionals than their western educated counterparts, when they are put in the same environment and recieve the same training. It might not be common place but it happens. The other day a young nigerian who recieved his primary education in the hinterland of the western African state, broke records in John hopkins University. Probably half his colleagues attended prestigious American prep schools when they were younger, didnt make a differnce to his abilities as an individual.

For people working in a multi cultural environment with such a narrow view of their colleagues, it is simply saddening. No wonder one poster on the Survey thread made a heartfelt appeal, for there to be fairness and people not be judged on their religion or their passports.

Whats interesting though is how some "third worlders" have learnt to play the game, Just get a Western passport and a fake accent and voila, everybody assumes you are smarter than you really are. Maybe just maybe thats why EK is littered with non performing mid level managers, i don't know.

Neptune Spear: Wrt "Where is the GCAA?"

It pays well to remember that the entities within the GCAA are employed by the same entity that we all are... and therein they too, more often than not, have to 'toe the party line' wrt any agenda set by those much higher up than they are, and therein they too walk a parlous tightrope of often wishing to 'do the right thing' (and they often do, and they do it well too, imho!) versus receiving somewhat 'differing' instructions from those further up the command chain.

And in case you're not aware of it, the hierarchy works as follows, wherein just one v.senior member of Dubai royalty holds all of the following positions (amongst his other positions):

Chairman of Dubai GCAA
Chairman of Emirates (EK)
Chairman of FlyDubai (FZ)
Chairman of Dubai Aerospace Enterprise (DAE)

Just sayin'....

Flap, that's interesting. The CC certainly never saw that email.

They were told as per the start that the issue was faulty PBE- the recent ACI given even says so, with additional information provided on how to spot potentially expired PBE- (interestingly, very similar info that I had suggested be included in the training years ago)- would be very interested to know exactly what was said in this email....

PM if you prefer...

Neptune, I find your generalisations disturbing. As someone who has worked for near a half dozen airlines, including one known as the world's safest, I can tell you that idiots are idiots, wherever they may be, and whoever trains them. The same goes for the competent ones. Even when given sub-par instruction or training, they still perform to the required (higher) standard.

I can tell you that the airline we are talking about is not the only one to possess both (in both ends of the plane, I am sure!)

first person off the airplane was a Grade 2.

How do you know that? Photo please? How do you know they were not an A (assist) position crew doing as drill dictates and exiting to assist pax off the slide? Please do let me know how many cabin crew evacuation trainings you have completed and I may take you more seriously (note: cockpit crew evac does not count since the focus is not on the cabin and assigned duties for each cabin jumpseat)

Good to finally see confirmation from above that the entire crew did the right thing and the event was very well handled lead by the Captain.

The current PBE's obviously are a concern hence the change. The CC did in fact do a good job, so well done to them. All of what Neptune mentioned and I mean the entire post is speculative and untrue. Carry on.

Odericko

You are spot on

I for one received my education in a third world country - hold what is arguably the worst passport on the planet - and still manage to get by quite well

Judgement is for the weak to use

The point in my 3rd world reference was that a lot of Westerners are leaving the company in every department. The ones that stay are from the 3rd world. Just look at a typical GD. Very few UK, Aus or Irish anymore. Loads of Fliapos, Thails and Indians.
So the question is why do a lot of nationalities from the "West" leave while people from the 3rd world stay in spite of the way the company works and treats its employees?
Also a point of dialogue is over a year ago an edict came down from a high place saying no more hiring of Asians for CC. That edict was reversed because the company couldn't get the numbers they needed to fill the slots. It seems the Asians are far more likely to put up with the crap the company gives then even the Eastern Europeans.
How can one say the CC did a good job when 4-5 couldn't even put on a PBE?
I am curious, how many people from the west are trying to get 3rd world passports vs how many from the 3rd world are trying to get passports from the west? What is the ratio, 2 billion to One? Did I really have to point out the obvious? Enough said.

Your point is missing the point

Nothing you said was relevant to the core of the subject

As usual the thread has drifted away from the real problem.
PBEs that are suspect at the very least.

When I arrived in the pit the initial SEP my course attended was a real eye opener in a number of ways.

All the previous companies I have flown for used the DRAGA smoke hood system.

The O2 generator is at the bottom of the apron style front heat shield, this keeps the heat from the generator away from the user's head and neck, plus the whole thing is well balanced.

I have always thought our current PBE is more ticking a box rather than a serious piece of kit. However, its not my train set!
