Qatar says female workers need permission to get married.
Interesting article about rights of workers in Middle East Airlines

Nothing to do with the fact that the AAB allegedly says that the cabin crew are "his" girls then??
But it is old news, been the same for as long as I can remember, that's for sure. Why anyone who wasn't absolutely desperate for a job would go there is beyond me... and yes, I know a good deal of them are but not all.... the rules they have to live with is just crazy...

Been a policy for ages....in many ways self-inflicted by the crews themselves...so impose rules on all because of stupidity of..well...more than a few...

Ironbutt,
You've got the worst case of stockholm syndrome I've ever seen. Yikes. What is wrong with crew members deciding to get married? Isn't that a basic right we should all enjoy as human beings without having to ask our employers for permission??!?
Under what circumstances do you think someone should ever need permission from their employer to get married?
You've given up so many rights working for Qatar i think you've lost perspective. Has AAB ever denied permission to any crew member?

According to GalleyFM (and I have heard this from ex-QR employees as well), one unfortunate pair managed to keep their relationship on the down-low until it came to the point of wanting to get married. So like good little boy and girl went to the Boss to ask and both promptly got fired. No idea if the fact that he was flight and she cabin crew had any bearing on it...
Not sure of the truth but it doesn't sound that far fetched, and it persists, so I'm sure it's happened to at least some....
Okay fine have your rules if you don't want your CC to 'fraternize' but to require permission to get married is ludicrous.... Plenty of married crew in EK and the other airline and they haven't come to a screaming halt yet...

In the "BAD" old days in the western shores of Australia, you could not be a CC if you were married!!!!
Divorced seemed to be a breakthrough at one time.
And then we got fellas down the back, married of each sort, then the pregnant ones as well.
Both of my crew, largely pregnant doing their last flight together as they were class mates earlier, perhaps a bit far as there was some real doubt about opening the forward service door in their "condition".
Contentious at the time, short flight in good conditions, not repeated with me anyway. Others had some definite thoughts and made a fuss, perhaps so???

There's a fine line defending a policy as opposed to understanding why it's there...and NO...when you're sponsored into a foreign country, and they have a rule that one is well aware of before they join...then so be it...not possible for me to have Stockholm syndrome..because I don't work there, so I'm not subject to that rule...is it a great rule that I agree with??..not particularly...but the reason it's there is totally understandable...

Can you enlighten us a bit please as I, and am certain others too, have a hard time understanding why an employee should ask permission to marry from his or her employer. I'm not a big fan of dipping the pen in company ink myself, but if one of my guys wish to get married - even if it's with one of other blokes - I really couldn't give rats posterior, and would be utterly flabbergasted if asked for permission. True, I work and live in the civilized part of the world, but still ...

Ironbutt,
Ok you don't work there so you don't suffer from stockholm syndrome. But what do you mean by that rule is "totally understandable?????"
Is there any other country in the world where you have to ask your boss for permission to get married??? It is so backwards I can't imagine how you could consider it close to being "understandable."

It's the rule ,that's it, much like you need a work visa. Your employer is your sponsor and you deal with their rules , if you don't like don't work for them. As stated before you knew the rules befor joining and if you didn't , then who's fault is that.
Also. This is the ME and there are many many rules for expats that you have no choice but to follow.

It's not about the "middle east region" or even Qatar the country ... show me one other employer in the region that has such an insane policy ... it's about one megalomaniac psychopath who happens to be the CEO of that particular airline.
I really, honestly believe he just does this kind of sh!t (and all the other million crazy little rules) just because he can, because he gets off on holding total God power over his employees, and making them beg to him personally for such a basic human right as marrying. He needs psychiatric help man.
He can and does refuse the marriage permission as well, pilots as well as cabin crew, in the time I was there, one very senior and very nice guy A320 captain from Croatia got terminated for marrying against AAB's permission

I do remember indeed the captain you are talking about.very nice guy indeed.
And the way he was terminated was pitiful.
The CEO sent "el Duce" ,a fellow Italian TRE for his LPC/OPC.
The little big man obviously "fixed"the issue of the session before it even started!
And yes I do agree, the way AAB treats the crew has NOTHING to do with the Fact that we are in the ME.

...On a broader note, Qatar has a terrible track record for the way it treats it's expat work force. It's improving in some areas but it mostly depends on if you wind up with a crackpot "megalomaniac" boss. And Qatari authorities will never intervene unless it will threaten 2022 plans.
Kinda like this:
