Renewal of UK ATPL from the ME

Am totally confused following telecon, backed up with e-mail, to the UK CAA reference renewal of my ATPL. Their constant referral to LASORS reminds me of why I became a pilot instead of a lawyer....

My situation is that I left the UK in '07 with an EMB145 rating on my UK licence. I did the Airbus manufacturers type course, written exam and PPC in Toulouse, prior to repeating it in DXB. Am now rated 330/340 and 380 on my UAE ATPL. UK licence is up for renewal in July and that is approximately when my 145 rating expires (5 years). Do I need a type current on my licence (one of the chaps that I flew with recently was relating how he does this but it seems to be at odds with the CAA, or maybe they weren't giving me the full story?!).

Also, since I did the manufacturers course, can this be put on my UK licence retrospectively (the test was done with a Brit at Airbus whose name escapes me right now but might be a UK TRE).

Would appreciate any advice here as it seems to be a minefield - and the last thing I need right now is to go back to Europe to try to sort out renewing the 145 with no intention of flying it again right now.

Furthermore, what happens with the UK IR? The CAA seemed to be telling me that if it lapses more than 7 years then the writtens are required again (horror!!) Why is it that I can renew my PPC/IR and fly a super into LHR and yet the IR work every test is unacceptable to the UK CAA?

Cheers

smiffy,

have a look at this post for info on getting your uae rating transferred to your european licence. i cant vouch for its accuracy but you could check it out.

to renew your licence for another five years, i think you just have to have something valid on it - could be the SEP rating - i dont think it has to be a type rating. Also, that is something which may change soon with the EASA authority, which is taking over licencing regulation on april 8th - i heard a rumour that the new licences will not expire, but dont quote me...

Here is the text from lasors -

A UK or JAR-FCL ATPL will be re-issued for a further
period (5 or 10 years validity as appropriate to the licence
held) if the applicant:
1. Holds a JAR-FCL Class 1 medical certificate valid
for the first day of issue of the new licence.
2. Has held for any class or type rating included in the
licence a Certificate of Revalidation the validity of
which has not expired by more than 5 years; or
holds a current and valid non UK issued ICAO Annex
1 compliant pilot licence and is flying an aircraft
type, using that licence, which is also included in the
applicant’s UK issued licence; or
is a Qualified Service Pilot in Her Majesty’s Armed
Forces who is in current flying practice on a
military type appropriate to the licence held (i.e. an
aeroplane for re-issue of an aeroplane pilot licence
or a helicopter for re-issue of a helicopter pilot
licence).
i would say you should get the jar licence renewed, then get a type rating put on it at your next check, then the issue of having to retake the exams if seven years has elapsed from the date of your last type rating expired will be sorted. (you would only have to retake the exams for an IR i believe, not all the ATPL papers, but best avoided)

all the best

Do you have a UK JAR licence??? Well, you can renew it with a c150 rating, if that is what you want.
If you are a Captain, ie have P1 on your licence, then you can get the EK type transferred after a sim sesh with a JAR examiner. This will re validate your UK IR. If you only have P2, good luck..

Have a look at the impact of the EASA changes as well... as far as I could work out, if on the 8th April 2012 you have a UK licence with valid rating then it will be auto-exchanged for an EASA licence. With no valid rating, there will be an extra exam or similar to contend with and it will be trickier.

I say 'as far as I could work out' because it is a bit of a minefield... I was just advised to renew my licence and type rating/ IR before 8th April.
