Choices....

Guys – I never post in this site and I don’t even spend much time on here reading the posts. But anyway – some of us come from places where money and bad management are really not on top of the list.
Where we are – 2000 murders in 2005, 38 burglaries in the last 2 weeks in the area, 7 year old son can’t sleep because of shootout and one dead police men in the drive way !!!!!!!!
So guys – for some people out there the grass IS GREENER on the other side !!!!!!

If you have no job then this is better than nothing...but not much!
if you have a job think very carefully.
most of the guys on the airbus are at 900 hrs and knackered...but fatigue is a bad word around here..if you have not hit 900 hrs you will be flogged until you do.
the starting salary for a new fo is only about 600usd per month more than the day the airline started...yet the price of most things has quadrupled!
when we joined it was ok money and the work wasnt so hard...now is a very different story.
we also have a very nice 6 day trip on the bus to ****holes in africa!
the choice is yours but dont say we didnt tell you!!!

Volare 737,

Whilst I can relate to your post, coming from the same part of the world as you do, the following points are noteworthy:
1) If the crime rate in SA(egoli) has become unbearable, and you want to leave, does it have to be to Dubai? With the possible exception of Colombia, almost every country in the world is safer by comparison. Iflyg4 might be from a part of the world where it is relatively safe already, and your concerns are quite meaningless to him personally.
2) Having had the benefit of living there and here, I can assure you that I have been the victim of more crime here. If the senseless murders back there leave you quite breathless, then take the death-toll on these infamous roads, multiply it by the necessary factor to get a per-capita amount, and I think you'll find yourself equally breathless.

I agree

I'm approaching a decade here, and I'll quote Paul Simon again:
"I don't know a soul that's not been battered,
I don't have a friend who feels at ease.
I don't know a dream that's not been shattered,
or driven to it's knees."

Ditto. Exactly as above. EK has nearly destroyed my family and dreams, I am not talking about money here. The wage versus inflation has been well expressed by other postings most completely true.

As said to you privately. Scratch deeper than the surface. It is not what is written on pprune that you really need to worry about. What should worry you is not written here.

I have been reading this post particularly and the Paul Simon quote hit the "nail on the head". The post before mine as well really brought things into perspective, something I was unable to put into words or express. To Iflyg4, I had a dream when I was young and my boss of my previous company said to me not to go, he also said to me as we grow older our priorities change in life....he is a smart man.....unfortunately I never changed my priorities and kept them the same as I was a little boy. Now some on the outside might find that admirable because rarely in life you get to fulfill a childhood dream and if given the opportunity one would probably take it, like I did. So on the outside it may seem this is the best job to go to, but you have to get here to realize that dream is quickly shattered. For me I realized quite fast, it is not what it appears to be. A million people told me not to go but I did because I had to find out for myself...I guess "curiosity killed the cat". Let me be the 1,000,001 person to tell you....Don't do it.

It is amazing that if you read through pprune and added up everyone that works for EK, how many would that be; 10, 20, 30 perhaps 100. Are we all crazy. How many does it take for people to start listening. For the rest of the people that do work for EK, are they thinking the same thing...perhaps...then why don't they post....perhaps they are computer illiterate, perhaps they are too busy, perhaps they don't have a choice, maybe they dont have a computer. I don't know what the answer to it is but I can tell you there is a lot more. You would think that management would read this and maybe figure out what is the common denominator....being them and realize that there is a problem. But they choose to ignore it.

I am afraid it is to late. If you are asking me what the problem is...it is the company culture....and I don't know if that is fixable.
I am not talking about the pay or the amount we work, but like the last post it is what is not said here. Just don't come here to find out what it is.

Dear iflyg4,

The best is if you have any good buddies already working in EK,contact them, ask for their recommendations.

Sometimes you cannot depend too much on pprune because some people will post negative things up here just to discourage people to join EK but the moment their own buddies ring them up,the story will be different.

Look at it this way and ask this question to yourself-"If these people are so unhappy at EK,why are they still around? Why won't they leave?"

iflyg4,
I have recently been offered a DEC B777 fleet and although I was flattered to be offered.I then sat about some serious research, the info, most of which is available on the net. I discovered the facts are very interesting and a little disturbing DXB's bubble will start deflating...a lot of expats are already bailing out...inflation in two digits ..will your salary match spiralling costs ?. I came to the conclusion it wasn't for me. however, if EK want the high calibre crews to fly their shinny new jets, O/seas bases may well work.
Good luck.

And if they were, there is a queue totalling over 1000 500 that would want out of here at the earliest opportunity. So do not come here on the hope that you will get a basing. In fact, don't come here hoping for anything, keep those expectations low!

Hi Propaganda,

You state after being offered the 7 DEC position you sat down and did some research on EK and Dubai. Your history shows you have researched EK for the last three years. Over the last year or two you have often provided informed commentary regarding EK overseas basings. Why after your recent successful interview did you get cold feet. Inflation and salaries have been a hot topic for the last two years. Don’t tell me PPRuNe successfully scared you away within the last three weeks?

Regards,

Kiwi.

Hi Muttley Crew,

Apologies if I have caused you concern AGAIN. I was only asking a question. iflyg4, has some serious decisions to make regarding his future. Just as you outlined in your post to me. So far its not looking too great for him!

So what is your problem anyway MC? Am I not allowed to ask a question?

I remember you came to someones aid about a month ago and made a complete hash of it, don't do it again.

Regards,

Kiwi.

To Iflyg4

Cat IIIB made a valid point. Why are those same people still here at EK if they are complaining or don't like it. Well if you are new it is hard to leave because you are bound by a bond which is over 3years. Once the 3 years is up, one might stay because they are that much closer to an upgrade. So they continue on staying. When you become a captain then its hard to leave that position and seniority to go elsewhere. If you decide to go home where seniority is a big thing then it is no point to go back if you have to start at the bottom...if you decide to go to another airline such as Singapore or Korean then you have to ask yourself if it is worth it after building up an establishment here in the ME. So it ends up being a sucker hole and you are stuck. Ask yourself how long can you see yourself in the ME.

Also I have not seen any responses from Iflyg4. It would be nice to see some feedback.

Everyone keeps saying that you won't save money and you'll be gone all the time. But, I've been told the average A330 trips are better than the 777's because the 330's trip days are around 2-4 day trips instead of the 7-9 day trips on the Boeing. Also, there's a good chance for a quick upgrade since the A380 is coming and there will probably be some movement. But, with the inflation in Dubai, I'm starting to think life could be unaffordable on FO pay. If EK is paying for my rent, that's money that I wouldn't have in the US, so I guess it averages itself out. Any help from ANYONE about what's the best choice or opinions on money or the A330 or Dubai.....please PM me. I've got some big decisions to make and I'm all over the map right now. I have no idea what to make of all this. Thanks
When was your Interview ? How long after it did they contact you to offer you the class ? I just finished mine the end of May . Does it take too long to get an offer ? Thanks and all the Best !

Go to www.airlinepilotcentral.info and their forums. There is a ton of info on the interview. Probably enough info to keep you busy for an hour or so. DEC or F/O?

The Tech quiz is your basic ATP type exam. 30 questions and I know for sure I got 6 right . Some say getting the book "Ace the p;ilot technical exam" or something like that has helped, even though the book has errors in it. Some weather, some aero, some basic stuff like "what airplanes does EK fly that are fly-by-wire?" All multiple choice, three answers each. Probably a few "ringers" in there that if missed will be deal killers. Some, I had no clue. Good luck. The interview process was in every respect, in my opinion, very professional and very thorough.
