Does anyone know if Qatar does interviews in other places than Miami in the next future?

Miami Interview

Laid off twice in last two years...need work...interview next week in Miami!
10,000 total time...
4000 PIC jet and turboprop...

I don't know what to believe from reading these threads...the guys I've met from QR seem satisfied with the job.

Miami Interview

Interview is three phases. Each phase must be passed to advance to the next. In my group 2 failed the written and one the interview.

50 question knowledge exam taken from JAA ATPL subjects. Recommend aviationtire.com for practice tests.

Interview:

HR questions are typical. What do you know about Qatar Airways? Tell us about your career up to this point. Will your family be accompanying you to Qatar? What airplane do you want to fly? What do you bring to Qatar Airways?

Technical questions prefaced by we want to get to know more about you. All questions were of the kind "tell me about a time or describe a situation when..."

Examples: Tell me about a time when you made a decision that was unpopular.
Describe a time when as a member of a team the outcome of the project was disappointing. Describe a time when you had to think on your feet to avoid a difficult situation. Describe a situation where you were not in control and how did you cope with it.

Simulator is the final phase. I can't tell you about that part because I didn't make it past the interview.

A word of advice. If you have a family, it is clear they expect your family to accompany you to Qatar. The interviewer became noticeably agitated when I told him I was planning not to have my my family accompany me, at least initially. He said if we hire you there is a 99.9% chance you will be a first officer on the A320, not the 777, when will you see your family? My answer was they can travel to Qatar from time to time for a visit. They clearly did not like my answers on this line of questioning, especially when I said that persons in the military are often separated from their families for extended periods, so we'll manage.

When I answered this question the interview was clearly over. But from what I read in this forum, why would I subject my family to 30 days a month in Doha when I will only be there for 8? My family should not have to suffer because of where I choose to work.

Mine was an honest answer. His response was quite telling. Clearly they want a captive workforce. That way it will be be impossible for the unhappy pilot to get off the airplane in London with no intention of returning when his family is still in Doha.

Going in I had my doubts about this company.

Philosophy here.

you come to Qatar to work.. full stop.. your under the sponsorship (work visa) of the airline and they can control whether you can come or go from this country. Your expected to be fully dedicated to the airlines operations and available when they need you. your family, friends and anything else is secondary. You come to Qatar, you live in Qatar. commuting is not an option. (hence the max 3 days off unpublished rule)

Having said that. In QA that would be the perfect pilot. Yes they can control whether you come or go via mandatory Exit Permits required to leave the country. But there is a option to purchase a Multi-Exit Permit from the company. the only thing is that they can still have it cancelled with just a simple phone call. (you have to be really bad for that to happen)

On occasion the airline does take away your day off and change it to a duty day or completely rearrange your roster with little or no notice and there is nothing you can do about it. depends on the fleet depends on how much that happens. In some cases you can loose your annual leave days as well, doesn't happen that often but it does and has happened.(you still have the days stored but they are removed for operational reasons). remember you come here to work for the airline.
you can request a day OFF for your kids / wife birthday, anniversary or anything similar.. whether it be honored or not is just chance and there is no personal humanity, so get used to it. Thats just the way it is here.

if your single, dont mind bouncing around in a aircraft from day to day. or blindly sitting in Qatar for days of standby with no where to go. If you like working in a place where the only this constant is that nothing is ever constant. then this airline is for YOU.

amendment to capt krunch's statement about rostering:

rostering is a mafia and nothing else - talked to a guy, who called jeppesen personally about the bidding system; they told him, he got 100% of his bits, on his roster was not even 40% - and yes, they change your roster, how they like it and believe me - you will be legal for your flight.

about the leave - if they cancel your leave for operational reasons, your days will be still there, but you have to fight for it or to get the money at least

good luck

Hi!

Minimums:
My buddy showed me that QR has just lowered their requirements:

First Officers
Minimum of 1,000 hours in one of the following categories:
- Multi Crew, Multi Engine Jet Aircraft
- Command Turbo-Prop above 20,000kg MTOW
- High Performance Military Jets
Valid ICAO ATPL or Frozen ATPL
Valid Instrument Rating
Valid Class 1 Medical.
ICAO English Proficiency Minimum level 4.
Age below 50 years at date of joining
Experience Commensurate With Age

I applied about a year ago, when I met the minimums. After 2 or 3 months, they raised them and I did not meet them. Now I meet them again, so I will re-apply.

Test studying:
JAA ATPL Test | AviationTire.com
...another website said there were about 24,000 qestions in the JAA test bank!

atpcliff, the QR quizz questions are JAA based, they have nothing to do with the JAA exams' questions. Studying the JAA question bank will achieve close to nothing and confuse you, as they go much deeper into their subject. Study "Ace the technical pilot interview", it covers what you will be asked.

Has anyone interviewd in Miami heard from QR. Does anyone know how long it takes to get a response? Is it usually in the form of an email or a phone call?

Thank you.

Think twice

I wish you all the best of luck with your interviews, however think twice beofre taking a job here, read all the comments about life in Qatar and life working for QR. Take a few pills go to dark room and lie down, when you feel you have no desire to work for QR anymore then you are well again.
