They like people who don't understand that they lost more than last year's 3%. This year your percentage pay rise would've been based on last year's salary level AND the last year's 3% increase. This is known as compound interest, my friend.
1.03*1.03= 1.0609.

So, if we get 6%, we have been short changed .09%.

On my base thats 367 DHS for the year.

Hardly the end of the world....

Correct Wizofoz, except that you ignore two things that add a lot to the significance:

1. The compounding alsts for the rest of your time in Emirates; and
2. The compunded result also affects the company's prvident fund contributuin, which will be significantly more than your own in later years.

Better in your pocket than theirs, surely?

Tri,

Definatley.

Not to mention the 3% that would have been in our pocket had we got the rise last year.

But, considering it WAS a global crisis, not getting a pay rise for one year is not too bad a result.

Now thing are better, I'm sure we all hope the purse strings will be loosened.

Interesting month ahead...

I'm not surprised someone pointed that out, Wiz. As I ALREADY said, the amount is not the point. Try telling some of the FOs what's a trifling amount and what isn't.

A few years ago when the pay rises were coming thick and fast in the double digit range (before they took it all back with the overtime threshold shift) the compound effect would even have impressed you.

This is yet another way the bean-counters reach their profit targets - taking back from the employees. And it happens all the time. There are none so blind as they who will not see, hey?

Beats me why some people are happy to work for love especially in this joint, Wiz.

I don't work here for the love of it, PK. I work here because, at this point, staying here is the best option for me and my family. If that stops being the case, I'll leave.

I am certainly not blind to the limitations of Dubai as a place or EK as an employer, but I'm ALSO aware of how things are elsewhere in the world.

Thing is, you can spend all the time you like comparing what is to what was. It's irrelevent unless what ELSE is now available is better.

I don't think I've contiously contradicted anyone on PPRUNE who has a legitimate beef with EK (indeed, I have a few myself!!), though I know I have inadvertantly on at least one occasion questioned a rumour that turned out to be true!.

But when people write pure BS (not saying you did, but it IS a trifling amount!!) I do feel it necessary to point it out, just to give some type of balance to the information being posted.
