EK: On The Road In The US
The results are in from the US Direct Entry Captain roadshow.
Grand total to be offered a job: 36
Seems as TCAS's view of thousands of furloughed pilots pounding on the tent flap didn't eventuate.
What's your thoughts Mr. Ed?

Just two corrections. It wasn't a Direct Entry Captain roadshow. While that may have been one of the goals, it was also to attract qualified F.O.s. Also, the roadshow was not a complete interview. The people who were successful in the sim/tech quiz will be invited to Dubai for the remainder of the interview. That may be the number you are hearing. I'm sticking with my prediction of 20 to 30 max, including F.O.s.

It seems the SIM was a major stumbling block. The number of applicants offered a position for the next round is far below that of what was expected. It seems that FOs did better in the SIM eval than the Capts. A pass rate of less than 60% has been quoted (not confirmed though). Those that got through this stage have yet to do all the party tricks in DXB, so it will be interesting to see how many of the 36 turn up, and of them, how many pass. Other walk in applicants from the open days will of course be offered interviews, so final numbers from these sessions will take a while to work out.

I attended the ATL roadshow. My impression was that there were a lot of people there just kicking the tires. You had to have an active application to get the sim ride.
There were a lot of guys sitting there that hadn't put in the paperwork. I belong to that group. I haven't decided whether to submit the application, yet. I wanted to hear what they had to say.
Generally, my impression was people were interested, but skeptical. I don't know how many actual employees it will generate.

My impression, therefore subject to error, was most people had read pprune. They wanted to address many of the issues that are frequently raised at this forum.
Duty rigs, management support, pay, housing, scheduling, flight passess, transferring household goods, schools, kids, wives, golf, cool cars, big shiny new airplanes, hot F/A's. Oh yeah, money.

No oven mitts, but they did pass out really cool pens. I am using it now at work.
As far as some of the guys busting the sim ride, I don't have any information. But there were several retired captains who were going to the sim. Most of these guys have been out of a cockpit for over 6 months. Also, they all flew the 767ER.
I know when I went from the 767 to the MD11 it had a reputation as a tough transition. The MD11 does not hand fly very well, mostly due to the LSAS which automatically trims the stab. It is really easy to over control. So if the guys had trouble in the sim I wouldn't be surprised.
But I really like my pen.
