LDG No blue,
Nothing special to tell you about this 450 figure, go to the housing dept. and ask what is the maximum rent you can go up to in your quest for the best appartment in Bah., in one of the buildings (in Juffair of course) whose landlords have some agreement with GF.
That is the figure you should be given. If not, then you should re-check your contract, because if married your housing allowance should be 350Bds per month which is the "bold" figure for a flat only, on top of that comes the municipality tax and utilities, plus, you will not have to disburse whatever advance payment, cause Gf is the guarantor, after what you'll have to stay at least 1 year in the abovementioned accomodation.
Hope this helps.
Cheers.

I dont really care how it's broken down and whats its comprised of, bottom line is -
IT AIN"T ENOUGH!!
And that flies directly in the face of what I was led to believe when recruited, ie that housing will be covered by the company. Therefore my effective package is less than what it should be, and that really makes me happy!!!

Gf have never done it right on houseing (according to Western thinking).
In 1973 the GF expat managers master plan was to have a GF compound similar to Awali for future staff.
The reason they never did was the local landlords.
These gentlemen made representation to Sheik Essa that they could provide the accommodation and that it was wiser and more fail safe to disperse Gf staff throughout the community.
Nobody wanted another pocket of potentially concentrated unrest like Awali which could hurt Bahrain by expat industrial action.
In thoes days the two major industries were oil and aviation.
The wise men of Bahrain in 1973 looked towards the UK and were thus very worried about union power and how union leaders used that power.
The sheik told me he felt the unions were destroying Britian.
Obviously he decided to have none of it in his country.
He was also observed that "After winning the wars" the British immigration policy was now giving away citizenships and permanent residence and "letting the enemy in will destroy you".
Again looking at the UK he decided to keep a very tight control of immigration, citzenship and permanent residency into his own country.
Todays sheik has a difficult path to tread in a more difficult world and sadly Gf staff houseing is not a priority whilst GF aircraft takeoff and land.

Olbie,

There are "two" allowances.
If you decide to take the money and find our own apartment, then the amount on the contract, say BD250 is what you get paid into your salary.
If however you decide to let GF get involved, e.g. show you places or manage the agreement aka company accomodation, then you get much more allowance than what is on your contract.

Best thing to do is get local agents to show you around apartments that meet your criteria to get a feel for the price you would be paying in the open market. Then contact GF housing to let them show you apartments, again tell them your essentials.
You may find that they show you apartments that if you paid in the open market are higher than your allowance but as GF are showing you its within your allowance !
I have colleagues living in very nice apartments (BD700pm) for which they are paying around BD100pm out of their own pocket but if they rented it directly could not afford to live there.

You can 1) have a "free apt" but it may or may not be to your standard..or 2)you can find one u like and have GF lease it and deduct the difference from your salary if it is over the allowance...or you can 3) take the cash allowance

All ironbutt has done is regurgitate the options the company will offer you...
HOWEVER
this option 2) from above has been invented from nowhere?????

The contract clause, put simply, states:
The company will provide FREE apartment style accomodation
or
Alternatively, the emlpoyee may opt for the allowance in lieu of company accomodation

The fact that a particular apartments rent is over and above that of the accomodation allowance is completely irrelevant as per the terms of the contract.

For you then to have an amount taken from your salary.....well Olbie, you tell me if you think thats correct.

Ironbutt

dont waste your time with the tired old 'if you dont like it, then get out'.
I really cant be bothered.

Olbie, you can try to challenge the wording in the contract but quite honestly it's hardly worth the effort. You might end up making more enemies than anything else, much better to try to roll with the system and make the most of it. Dixon is just another one of these bitter b***ards who will never be happy no matter what the company do, so better to ignore his posts. They are just repeditive dross anyway. The good news is that an increase in housing is on the cards and possibly in education too. Its become a very big issue with new joiners and something has to be done if we are to get any pilots to join in the future.

Furniture allowance

Olbie,

There is another "trick" GF uses to attract you to "GF accommodation". Dont think you will be paid exactly the same money if you decide to get it cash, they will give you less. There is something that is in nobody`s contract called furniture allowance; it is about BD45 and you only get if you choose GF accommodation, it means GF housing mafia created this extra allowance to make you go for their system. I was surprised when I learned that the company spends more money if you use their structure and staff than simply paying your allowance. Because furniture allowance is not in the contract you can not even complain you are not getting it. Maybe somebody from inside like JB could explain whats the advantage from GF`s point of view to give benefits if you go for the housing dep. scheme.
