Captain Sensible... you are the most sensible person on this forum! If only half the pilots using this forum would take your advice they wouldn't be complaining about not making enough. I worked with an engineer from Dubai (he was really Indian). He told me in the 4 years he lived there with his wife, they had saved nothing because they would shop and fill their trunks. When they got home they'd think to themselves how most of the stuff that they bought was useless to them. Its true that many people can't expect to save money in these no-tax countries, but alittle common sense and I think the majority will do just fine out in the desert.

Been here 10+ years myself and can't say too many bad things about it either. 95' was a bit "interesting" being stuck in Budayiah for 2 days watching the "fireworks"!

Things look good for now. BTW, anybody catch the two articles by Ms. Al Hussaini in the GDN, spot on I must say!! Let's just hope the locals don't run her out of town for stating the obvious

Guess I left Bahrain just as you were arriving. It was beginning to get less pleasant with the riots and Gas Bottle explosions, not that was the reason I left but GF looked as if was going down the pan due to the corruption within the company leading to huge losses.

Always had Jap cars as nowhere to drive and they were reliable with far better A/C than German cars.

For me Bahrain is just like a second home.

I lived there for just over five years. I left a few years ago, but I have been there a few times since. Sometimes I miss it. I have fond memories of Bahrain.

It has been said all before. Bahrain is a safe small island with all amenities and a fun place to live. Its nationals are friendly and polite.

The restaurants you will choose yourself based on cuisine, price or whatever. The car again is up to you. If you fancy a 4x4 or whatever, then buy it. You live only once. I also met some people who didn’t, but they saved lots of cash. Somewhere in between I think lies the answer.

I doubt if your Mohammed will be any different, but probably you’ll think so.

Just give it a go. Give it some time until you settle.

One thing for sure, you’ll never forget ‘Fantasy Island’.

Olivetto's not too bad for an Italian but have you tried Bam Bu in Adliya where Up a tree Cup a tree used to be.

Brilliant Thai food and for BD 11.800 a head the menu says

Bahrain and Dubai are very different, both places have their pluses and minuses, if you're a small-town sort of person, you might find Bahrain more agreeable...all the comforts and amenities, less crowded, but also not as exciting for a city dweller type of person.....Dubai being in the UAE has more outdoors type activities, beaches, desert adventures, but also more headaches as far as traffic etc...kind of hard to say one is better than the other...just different..both nice places to be

Are there many single people under 35 amongst the ex-pats? Or is everyone coupled up and married? Are some clubs better for younger singles to join?

But, if I join one of the "Country Clubs" mentioned previously... are some better than others for young singles.... or are they all a mix of everybody?

Oh, and does anybody drive a Hyundai? or, is it a really cheap image in Bahrain to drive a Korean car??? After all the recommendations for Toyota, I was wondering why no-one had mentioned Hyundai?

There are Hyundai's in Bahrain, but the solution to cheap auto ops in Bah is to purchase one that has service and parts readily available..(.Jap cars.).most european and american cars are also well supported, but a bit more pricey......private clubs seem to be more of a couple's scene....night clubs do have memberships as well..but never seen it really come into play unless it is presenting a televised sporting event, or band performance etc..etc..then members have priority..the rugby club is good value, as well as the Dilmun club..but for those "on-the-prowl" most night-clubs suffice..if you're big into lying on the beach and polishing off your tan, than a membership at the Meridian.(or whatever it's called now) is a great solution, as beaches are scarce..

Correct - just one "beach" worth checking out, and like good ol' IronB said, you have to dish out quite a few deneros to plant yourself on it. The rest of the beaches are in very sad condition - they are the largest trash-bins around.

Some community groups try to do their part with annual clean-ups, but since so many people litter without giving it the slightest thought, the clean-ups are like shutting the barn door once the cows are out - a complete waste of time. As soon as the clean-ups are done, the littering starts once again...pretty sad.

I read something on another website that said that there were coral reefs north of the island(?). If there are coral reefs, are they good for a dive, or have they been hit by "coral bleaching"?

Also, how much is membership of the Rugby Club and do they have a website?
