Managed to get an EASA Class 1 Medical (although limited)

Folks,

I thought I would update that finally today after plugging away at the CAA with endless Consultant Visits and Reports I have managed to get an
EASA Class 1 Medical (although it is restricted with an OML).

I flew threw the rest of the Medical including Spirometry, ECG, Audio etc.

It is an initial issue of a Class 1 with OML.

Part of me is overjoyed that I have managed to get this hurdle out the way but on the other slightly saddened that it is limited with an OML - which may not make things any easier from the training perspective and eventually getting to the RHS.

I am aware of arguments that most carriers will not touch you etc etc - but I don't think its impossible.

Trying to put a training plan together as I post this without "Single Pilot Operations"!!

That's definitely cause for heartiest congratulations ! It may not be an absolute first, but in my experience the OML restriction is mostly used in existing class 1 holders, who subsequently develop a condition or a situation where full class 1 fitness is dubious, even if only temporarily.

What is the medical reason for the OML ? ( as you say, you simply sailed easily through most of the medical ). Sorry, others may know your past background, but I've joined here only relatively recently ! Just wondering if it's something which might be deemed permanent.

Good luck with your training, and even more so getting that first "foot on the ladder" flying job !

No need for apology. I have been plugging away at the CAA under JAR in 2004 but under JAR an "initial issue" could not have an OML.

My Class 2 was temporarily suspended and I was repeatedly reminded I remain "unfit" Class 1 but didn't want to attend for an initial only to be told the same thing after attending!

The problem is a "visual problem" and an inferior nasal defect limited to the lower quadrant of my right eye.

I had a good AME who helped out in the process and in essence we waited for EASA to kick in and attempt the "deviation" route for Class 1.

Class 2 was reissued under EASA after a successful Medical Flight Test as without it I could not "Solo".

A few consultant reports later from an Private Ophthalmologist and attendance of the EASA Class 1 medical resulted in comments from the Optometrist as CAA that it will most likely be a "first OML initial Class 1 under EASA" if I am successful...

The only issue now is how I go about the training because it limits options like Instructing and being paid for Commercial Operations under Single Pilot!

I think they look at the case on its own merits and because my problem is permanent and stable..

If yours was the first Initial class 1 with an OML then even more congratulations are in order !

Very pleased to read that ; it's true, and that sort of thing should be spread and publicised much more widely ! All too often the medics at the Belgrano are portrayed as being unfair, restrictive, and prohibitive, when all they are doing (in the UK anyway, doesn't apply everywhere) is adhering to the rules as laid down by law. In general they prefer, wherever possible, to keep pilots flying ; not the reverse !

Good luck with your CPL training !

I got a CAA issued Class One OML issued on my first certificate back in 2005, and was told by the Doc there, this was the first one they had issued as i think the rules changed in 2005.

Well done.

Congratulations - having been there and done that I know what a great feeling it is.

Don't forget hat your OML won't affect your training - though it does affect your employment opportunities after training. You can still instruct at PPL level as only a class 2 is required for that.

Don't make the mistake I did and ask whether there was any way the OML could be removed by applying risk mitigation (in my case wearing goggles) - not only did they say no but they added some extra limitations they had forgotten the first time around ...... !
