Sleeping Tablets
Hi Guys,
Can anyone tell me what sleeping tablets are allowed by the CAA? I hold a class 1 medical.
The underlying physical cause is being addressed but on the odd occasion I can't fall asleep.

The CAA frowns on all pills, because no long term trials have ever been carried out.
I used to use Temazepam 10mg or 20mg, which were used by RAF crews during the Falklands war, with good effect. Prescription only, and doctors not too keen on giving them out.
Then very occasionally I tried Dormicum 15mg. Also prescription only
If you're in Europe you can buy 25mg Doxylaminsuccinate over the counter. But not in UK. This is an antihistamine rather than a sleeping pill, but it did help for the occasional sleeplessness.

Temazepam is one of many ways of taking benzodiazepine.
One of my impassioned warnings about Valium and the like was made a sticky for some time. Search this forum, me, anytime, and any of this group.
I earnestly recommend not taking it, the results can be horrifying.
I'm no longer flying, but it's still Zolpidem for me, even though its 3 to 4 hour half life seems to have been extended. Again I mention that I would take as little as a quarter of the recommended dose. Half, at the most.
I'm getting continued good results from the technique of running through an idyllic story/setting. This is after years of resorting to sleepers because of trying to live on both sides of the Atlantic. Hard to do sometimes, but I've reduced the use to a fifth of the nights prior to doing this.

I obtained 4 Dormicum (Dormicom?) from my doctor for those rare occasions when I just HAD to sleep because of a "back of the clock" operation in about 15 hours time.
The one and only one I used worked perfectly, with me leaping out of bed raring to go after a great sleep, and then.........
I became aware of several friends who were highly dependant upon Dormicom, be it psychological or physiological I don't know. They could not sleep at any time without it.
The remaining 3 tablets I possess remain at the bottom of my Nav bag for EXTREME emergencies.
My non-medically qualified advice is to keep one for EXTREME emergencies, and flush the rest.

I've been diagnosed with TMJ dysfunction. The muscles of my head and neck are all in spasm also causing a very high freq tinnitus. Most nights I've been able to sleep eventually but all in all its fatiguing. Hence the request about sleeping tabs.
The dentist is making up a mouth guard although I'm sceptical. Will give it a go.
In the meantime the doc has given me Zopiclone.
