Type 2 diabetes and Class 1 medical

Hello,

I've booked my class 1 medical because I plan to become a commercial pilot and thought it would be a good idea to see whether there was anything that could hinder that plan.
However, I have just done the worst thing possible, and self diagnosed myself with type 2 diabetes. Don't ask me why, but the internet is a horrible horrible thing.

Does anyone know whether type 2 diabetes would stop me getting that class 1 pass? I'm not saying I have it myself, but my great uncle was diagnosed yesterday and it got me thinking, and I'm a bit of a worrier like that.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Cheers
Matt

May be worth a search on the subject of type 2 diabetes.

I'm curious to know how you've self diagnosed diabetes. There's only one way I know for sure, and it doesn't involve going on the internet

I suspect that you're young, keen, and may have some vague symptoms of diabetes. I'll bet a surgeons salary that you don't have diabetes.

How did you arrive at your conclusion?

You need to see your GP and have a fasting blood test done. Maybe also a Glucose Tolerance Test. You can't self diagnose Type II Diabetes, least of all from the Internet!
If your Type II diabetes is confirmed then you can still hold a Class 1 Medical provided it is under control either by diet and exercise or even with an allowed drug regime.

The internet is a hypochondriacs dream!
Well, I don't have type II diabetes . They way it came about was I found a site with "symptoms" of which I convinced myself I had all of.

Anyway, unfortunately I'm not that young, old enough to know better is the phrase!

Many thanks for your replies guys.

Isn't it incredible what the mind can do when you convince yourself you have a medical problem, even to the point of engineering symptoms.

I remember reading about a university study on this. They injected a group of men aged 18-30 with a placebo saline solution pretending it was a test of a new drug and sent them home with a list of symptoms and told them if any of these symptoms developed over the next few days they should return immediately. I cannot remember the exact percentage of them that returned but it was certainly > 50%. At which point they were told about the placebo and congratulated on their pregnacy

Best of luck with your medical.

Unfortunately a phenomena present amonst medical and nursey types, 'specially during training.

Work on a bowel ward, you think you've got bowel cancer. Work on a brain ward, you suspect that those headaches could be brain tumour.

Work in primary care, and realise it's all a bit of a lottery anyway. Apart from smoking.

Type II diabeties at entry is a cause of unfitness if you are on medication for it.
First you need to get your self diagnosed and then only ponder about it.
If your Fasting & Post Prandial sugar levels are high you need to take life style modification and consult your doctor. If your blood sugar levels revert to normal then you will be declared fit and you need to continue the dietary restrictions initiated. However if the levels are high than you need to start medication and in the long run the prognosis will depend on the development of the disease process.
