Runny Nose ..Plz help !
I have already searched on the forum but did not find anything related to my problem.
I get runny nose every morning I get up (like hay fever even in winter.. but only runny nose with a lot of watery mucous). It stays for an hour or less and then fine. My GP said its nothing to worry about but I am sick of having it every morning. I have strong doubts on clearing my Class I due to this problem. I am, otherwise, in a very good healthy conditions.
Do you have any knowledge on this - please help me.
Many thanks.

Sounds like an allergic reaction.
Do you have duck or goose feather bedding/pillow?
A friend of mine had similar symptoms and it seems he was sensitive to either the feathers or the dust mites that lived there. Either way, the symptoms stopped as soon as he switched to synthetic fibres.

Sounds like rhinitis, a condition where the lining of the nose becomes inflammed, and starts "running"
Usually, the cause is viral, (eg the common cold virus), or there is a specific irritant causing the symptoms, known as an allergen.
If the problem is seasonal, a likely culprit is pollen.
If it is chronic, the culprit could be anything from dog hair, dust mite droppings, as stated, pillow down, dust etc etc.
Its not always possible to avoid the allergen, but you could try having a chat with your local pharmacist as their are some really useful "Over the counter" remedies.
Avoid pseudoephedrine, as it tends to work for a few days, then actually makes the condition worse. Nasal steroid spray appears to be effective for most patients.
Allergen identification and desensertisation is costly, tends not to work, and has lead to fatalities, where in my experience, a runny nose has yet to kill anyone.
Not sure why it would affect your medical, but sorry I'm not an expert.
Chat to your ame before taking any meds.

Have you suffered from a head trauma in the past, even a slight one without loss of consciousness?
The fluid running out of your nose could be cerebrospinal fluid, which indicates that there is a small rupture of your meningeals. The problem with those ruptures is that they allow bacteria to enter the barin and cause life-threatening meningitis, the likelihood of which is about 1-2% per year. So if you feel that the fluid coming from your nose is water-like ckear, go have it checked. A simple test for glucose content can confirm or rule out this potentially serious problem. If this diagnosis is confirmed, you can have it fixed surgically.
Good luck!

Many thanks to all taking time to reply and for you recommendations.
- I don't have a feather pillow. Its an orthopaedic foam pillow which is better than a cotton/feather pillow. No particular reasons for using it though.
- My Gp has now recommended me to take "Rhinocort Aqua 64MCG Nasal Spray 120DSE". He has suggested that its some inflamation and this steriod spray would help to reduce it.
- DocJacko, I've never had any head trauma in the past. The fluid is transparent mucous.
I will update this post after a week or so to give results of this spray. Might help someone else.
Many thanks to you guyz.

Runny Nose
Have the same problem and it seems worse in winter, on early mornings and when it's cold. Lasts about a half hour then goes away. Doesn't seem a problem if I have a good lie in or the weather is warm.
GP diagnosed slight allergic reaction to house mite dust. Prescribed a steroid spray called Fluticasone which cures it, if I remember to take it as soon as I get up.
AME knows and raises no comment.
Problem solved.

i had an awful problem with this....
went to the doc and he gave me a beconase spray which helped solve the symptoms, but it had a rather uncomfortable side effect-
it tore the lining in my left nostril+it was soooo sore+uncomfortable....I had to get these weird stitches in my nose...*pipergirl shivers at the memories*
he told me that i had a allergy to house dust or something
I solved my problem by complete accident-
I have asthma+decided to go to a class in Dublin about how to tackle ur asthma naturally. What I discovered was-my running nose/blocked sinuses were a symptom of my asthma....i did the course+continue to do the exercises.....my asthma has improved immensely+in turn my sinuses have calmed down...
one thing the guy in the course suggested as an alternative to using nasal sprays-
a nasal rinse made up of slightly warm water+sea salt...he reckoned it did the same thing.
I tried it a few times and it did the job for me when i needed it
i don't know if this is of any help....but just my 2cents worth
hope u get it sorted...

Have had a similar problem for the last 5 years and had no dramas with my ame or my class 1. Got the steroid spray which I blast my nose with as required. Would not loose too much sleep over this one. There are far more important things that the ame would be concened about.

Piper..
I would be interested in more info on the exercises you mention.....is there a web site?
Also. the sea salt/ water spray does seem to help me ... FYI it can be purchased commercially as HYDRAsence Nasal Care System manuf by Laboratoires Goemar S.A. 35413 Saint-Malo, France and avail almost anywhere (although quite expensive for salt dissolved in water...but handy to use).

I had this too. The one day while snorkling in Puerto Rico I realized my nose had cleared up! So I started doing the saline nasal spray plus throughly rinsing my nose in the shower. After a while it went away. Still gone today.

Same problem...
Greetings!
I've got the same problem, but it's not just in the morning, it's all day. I just started having this drainage down the back of my throat, and I end up clearing my throat constantly throughout the day.
Not sure what I can attribute it to, but it's very annoying, and just came on within the last few years. My doc said he thought it might be acid reflux, so I took Nexium for over a month and it didn't help a bit. He also recommended I lay off the coffee.
My father has the same problem, and he originally thought it was due to his flying the 747 for hours on end (being in very dry air...), but now doesn't think that's it.
I really can't attribute it to my flying either, and I can't pinpoint it to where I live. I've gone on weeks long vacations, to the middle of the pacific ocean even, and can't get away from it.
My current thinking is that it could be a side effect of dehydration (i.e. not drinking enough water during the day)???
FakePilot, are you still doing the saline nasal spray? I've heard that flushing your nose with warm water helps reduce the sinus inflamation, but I would think that is a temporary solution, and won't really solve the problem...
I could be wrong, I'm just a pilot...
I have run into a TON of people (many of them pilots) with these same symptoms, and no one can pinpoint the cause...

Slippery Wing,
Eventually it went away. Now I'm quite free of it. I still rinse my nose though with warm water during the shower. I'd rather not have it come back.
As always, I'd recommend exercise, positive mental outlook, reduction in bad things (food, drink, junk). That will do wonders.
Good luck! It stinks not to smell Spring. I couldn't smell anything for years.

Thanks to all ...
Thanks for your recommendations again. I am in the 2nd week of taking this spray which has improved my condition.
Slippery wing, I still have the problem to keep clearing my throat. It was due to the runny nasal problem.
One thing that I don't have ASTHMA at all... never had any breathing problem. Even doctors have never mentioned this...( and top doctors). I have also been asked to cut on Dairy foods and Caffine. Cleaning nose with warm water does help.
So far the improvment is good but I will further update after 2 weeks.
As Bomb Doctor suggested, there are far better things to be concerned about ... GOD, help me find a better training school ... I am getting stressed about this !!!!

Works Wonder !!
I just wanted to update with the results of the medication I took. The problem seems to have faded away but I will know for sure after my medical, once I completely stop taking the spray. But I can say that the spray has worked very well.
