Look into my eyes...look into my eyes...just my eyes...when I click my fingers you will believe that I am the healthiest, fittest superhuman in the world..one, two, three, CLICK...wide awake.....

If only!!

why is there a \'No substance dependance/addiction" requirement in a class 1 medical certificate? How do they check if you\'re dependant on illegal substances?
Allwerp,

I think you\'ll find that this exists at all Medical Class levels, not just Class 1.

Dependency / addiction would probably only be discovered if a person had received (documented) treatment at some stage, however, proper screening of blood / urine samples would reveal any usage so that would start the investigative ball rolling. There is also a difference between dependency and addiction, neither of which would be a desired quality in a professional pilot so I would imagine the investigations would be quite thorough.

HTH

allwerp,
Do a search on this forum for drugs as I read a post by a doctor who listed many drugs and their corresponding detection time in the body.

Here's the hammer on the head; you don't smoke at all until after your Class 1 now you should be fine. You smoke after your Class 1 and don't expect to be as efficient a learner in your flight training. Unless you are daddy's rich kid this is a once in a lifetime chance to prove yourself aviation worthy, and as a pilot you must learn to assume responsibility for yourself and your actions, and that includes smoking gange. C'mon mate, pull yourself together and realise what a career you're taking on.

More and more employers (not just in aviation) are introducing random drug screening for employees. This is in the interests of both efficiency and safety in the workplace. So don't expect it to be done only at your annual medical.

Cheers,
