Regarding the Medical examination

hi,I applied for the cadet pilot programme in MAS airlines(Malaysia Airlines System)and I passed the interview and I will be having my medical examination in 1.5 months time. Can anyone please describe to me the process of the medical examination?Do I have to go through a blood test, urine test,or a hair test? Thanks in advanced.your time and effort are deeply appreciated.

Irishwingz 18th Aug 2004 20:46

You can expect:

Urine test, chest xray, ECG (heart monitor) test, hearing exam, eye exam and general medical overview by the doctor.

I'm sure your aviation authority has a website and thus will have their medical standards available to you. Get these and have a look over them if you are concerned.

Good luck with the cadetship....;)

ok let me be frank : i smoked weed and a bong last few days ago and i'm concerned if they will conduct a drug test ??

Bird Strike 19th Aug 2004 09:09

I'm not trying to be rude, but these things and flying do NOT mix!!

AIRWAY 19th Aug 2004 10:47

i smoked weed and a bong last few days ago
Is this so you dont sleep much hence studying for longer hours  :} :E

Now like Bird Strike said, it doesnt mix, so please, try and quite those habits while you can.

allwerp 19th Aug 2004 14:07

well it was my first time trying weed...i only smoked like twice in my whole life..and now i gotta face the medical exam in like 1.5 months.what do u guys think about my chances of passing the medical?

picodaily 20th Aug 2004 10:00

uncool

i'm from malaysia too,and i recently passed the exam for airasia*for cadetship also), and will be having the medical exam soon, BUT, i fear i'm color blind,i was diagnosed as color blind when i was 10(ishihara plates) , but recently i had an eye check and he diagnosed me as not color blind, but color deficient..
what are the chances of me passing? i really want to be a pilot :(

Blinkz 20th Aug 2004 11:13

Colour deficiant and colour blind usually mean the same thing, however alot of people thing that colourblind means that you cannot see any colour at all. Total colourblindness is very very rare, however being colour deficiant is not, about 8% of males are colour deficiant. If you cannot pass the ishihara plates then you will usually have to pass a lantern test, although this depends very much on your authority. It sounds like you are colour deficiant and so many have trouble getting a medical for flying. check out the big thread at the top of the medical forum for lots of information about colourvision and flying.

allwerp 20th Aug 2004 17:23

picodaily, does AirAsia requires perfect vision for their cadet pilot jobs?and why didn't you apply for MAS instead? for obvious reasons :-)

allwerp

I must agree with the others, smoking weed and flying do NOT mix. But when you had your medical and start your flighttraining you HAVE to quit that......
Anyways, THC usually takes about 1 month to get out of your system, but I have no idea if there is anyway they could detect some sign of THC in your blood..........

allwerp 21st Aug 2004 04:58

1 month?! i though the blood in our bodies recycles every few days?

2close 21st Aug 2004 07:52

When (many moons ago) I was in law enforcement, the field test kit that we used could detect Cannabinoids in urine samples 28 days after inhalation / ingestion and I believe that the more sensitive equipment in the labs could detect them even further back than that, how far though I can't remember.

Hi Picodaily,

On the subject of Colour Vision Deficiency, as Blinkz said above there is a very informative thread at the head of this page. However, if it\'s of any comfort, I recently had a very extensive eye test at my local Optometrists (who is also a PPL) under proper lighting conditions and for the first time ever I only made two mistakes out of twelve on the Ishihara plates, compared to normally only getting a few right.

The point is that it is ESSENTIAL that the tests are carried out under proper lighting conditions, so it is possible that your original \'test\' was not done under proper conditions and that your more recent test was done correctly. At 10 it is quite likely that the orginal test was done in school, hardly ideal circumstances.

picodaily 21st Aug 2004 15:54

oops

actually, the doctor rated me as not as sensitive to colours ,but not colour blind,
i noticed that if i look properly,i can see the numbers of the ishihara plates, but not very clearly..

allwerp, i applied to be a aircraft maintenace engineer in MAS but still havent got any reply yet..(i got up to the interview stage):(

i just wated to know if there is another case where you can barely see the number on the plates...

alltwerp,

Dont worry about it. They dont test your urine for drugs, just diabetes.

But yeah - dont take any when you are flying training.

It wont show up on your class one though.

I'm not sure why people can't see the thread at the top of the page dedicated to "color blind" :hmm: We put it there as a "sticky" because its a popular topic and others can add their experience. Keeps all the valuable contributions together for reference.
Thanks

analyzer 22nd Aug 2004 06:22

Hi, i just done my class 1 medical check few days ago. Regarding urine test, they screen for morphine and cannabis usage.
Btw, diabetes test is done on blood test, not urine test.

Fred4000 22nd Aug 2004 16:02

analyzer - you are wrong.

They take a finger prick blood test, which is then put into a machine in front of your eyes to test for Iron and cholestorol. The results are back within mninutes.

Urine is tested for sugar - i.e. diabetes

allwerp 23rd Aug 2004 05:28

if blood test is for testing iron and cholestrol and the urine test is for testing diabetes only, then why is there a 'No substance dependance/addiction" requirement in a class 1 medical certificate? How do they check if you're dependant on illegal substances?

allwerp 25th Aug 2004 05:01

why no one reply me ? :-(

MercenaryAli 25th Aug 2004 22:20

Drug abuse!

They just look into your eyes !!:O
