Reflux

According to my GP, I have gastroespohegal reflux. Would I still be able to pass a CAA medical? Thanks.

Hi,

I suffer from acid reflux which sounds like the same thing. I'm on "omeprazole" for it, and my flying gp said that it's fine as long as I have no side effects from using it.

Thanks simfly. I'm on Ranitidine at the moment. Not doing a lot but I might convince my GP to move me over to Omeprazole. If not then I'll just get some over the net. I've had enough of this problem and its about time I was sorted out! Thanks again!

I'm no medic but I am sure that there will be some PPRuners who are who will suggest that this is a problem worth solving because of the risk of unhappy longterm consequences. In the meantime, sleeping on your left side helps.

I believe it is due to relaxation of the muscles around the oesophagus at the top of the stomach. So is there a cure or is it 'keep taking the tabs' (zantac/ranitidine is my case)?

Thanks for all your help. I don't think its major, but my symptoms are basically having a sensation of phlegm in the back of my throat and having to clear it every few minutes. Its really annoying, and its a pain, especially in public. Its worse when its cold but at least I'm recovering, albeit slowly. . Thanks once again for your help.

Is there any associated 'lumpy' feeling in the chest, pain of indigestion, unpleasant sensation in the oesophagus? Ranitidine should be able to handle it adequately.

Same problem as i've been experiencing for the past 8 years or so - there is an operation to fix the weakness around the top of the stomach to fix this weakness - believe the labour guy David Blunkett had this op. not so long ago - not sure how successful the outcome is though. I'm currently taking 40mg pantoprazole for the problem and mentioned this to the AME's at Gatwick before my class 1 and passed with no problems, so it seems that at least for me it wasn't a problem. Definitely worth further discussion with your G.P. as a gastroscopy is usually helpful just to make sure nothing untoward is occuring down in the stomach/oesophagus area (apparently a condition called barretts oesophagus can occur, pre-cancerous condition but treatable if diagnosed early enough). I'm sure that's not the case for you but better to have too much info. than too little. Hope this post is of some help.

I've occasionally had the reaction of which you speak but think I've pinned it down to imbibing quantities of beer exceeding one UK gallon whereupon it all, er, refluxes with some considereable force
Sorry folks - sincere wishes for a permanent cure - had a very little of it and it is pretty uncomfortable.

I had reflux before getting my class 1 and it was no problem, initially used zantac but was persuaded by my GP to try Lansoprazole(zoton) it is much more effective and less hassle than zantac. 1 tablet in the morning and forget for 24 hours. Curry, beer etc no probs.

Been advised to cut down to the minimum strength, went from 30mg down to 15mg as my GP believes this reduces the risk of stomach cancer in later years. Lets hope so.
