Class 1 and Deviation

Hi y'all,

Just phoned the jolly old CAA and they pleasantly informed me that if you're just out on eyesight and hearing (I'm out by .25 on the stigmatism and difference values for eyesight) they have recently adopted a slightly different policy.

Basically, you write to them with your prescription etc and details of what you want to do (ATPL etc) and they look at the case in detail. If you're just out, they will possibly issue a medical with a 'deviation' for the particular problem.

Upon passing your flight test / exams, they will then remove the deviation.

She (the woman at the CAA) seemed to think I would have no problem getting a Class 1 now.

Anyone else heard of this?

I'm now given to replying to my own threads to make myself look popular

Check out:

This is the interesting bit (which appears to have been adopted) in case you can't be bothered:

Thus a small number of pilots, who might fall just outside the JAR medical requirements, but who the UK CAA feel are fit, either through specialised medical opinion or through demonstrated ability, could receive JAR medical certificates. These would be limited to flying on aircraft of the state of licence issue unless another state agreed to mutually recognise the Deviation. The possibility of using a Deviation on a medical certificate will be discussed further within the JAA.

The interesting thing is, if you're 'out' for the initial but 'in' for the renewal, does the deviation get lifted?

Deviation

The lady at the CAA was indeed correct - its a new thing for people who are just outside limits. In my case I am .50 dioptres out on the limits for correction. The good eye doc in there said i could make a deviation request (which goes to the medical sub-committee) to see if they would give me a Class 2. (too far away from Class 1 initial unfortunately )

I havent in fact needed to do it as I got a class 2 South African. But I asked him what were the chances and he said it should be ok, at that stage (March this year) they had only 2 so far - both failed approval but they were for Class 1.

Hope it goes well fo ya
