F-104 Starfighter pilots

A request for assistance. I am currently working on an article about the F-104 in AMI service. I hope to obtain information from pilots of the AMI who flew the 'Spillone' for the article. I wish to know about what it was like to fly, its capabilities as a fighter/weapon system. I would also like to contact a pilot who flew the last most upgraded AMI variant. If you feel you might be able to contribute something please send me a message and I will provide you with my email address for further contacts. I am on a fairly tight deadline and would appreciate your information by 8 September. I look forward to hearing from you.

I personally know a 104 Pilot.

I honestly never asked questions about the aircraft's performance , by the way I remember that some of his colleague unfortunately died due to a malfunction in the autopilot system.

It was automatically disengaging itself (sometime) without any advice , while flying at low level.

I am not saying my opinion , is just what the pilot told me.

They were flying low level over the sea with the autopilot , when it suddenly became disengaged pitching down without giving time to react and recover.

Are you sure he was an f104 pilot????
I probably used the autopilot one time just to see how to insert it.......
But my experience on the f104 is quite limited

I have no information but I can tell you, on a note of color, that when they were passing low level they were known as the " scream of the taxpayer ". Never shot a bullet... ah may be one ..in Ustica..

WW you have NFC about what you are talking about and your friend is either a fake or fruit of your vivid imagination, the other option is that he is actually real but you have NFC what he was talking about which brings us back to option A !
As for the other fellow, It was more like a scream of pain for not having the chance to fly it, not even in their wet dreams.
That Ustica ****? Was that supposed to be funny? ...really a low blow, out of place and context and inaccurate....contrary to your introduction note !
All my kudo to the F104 boys flying low with a chart, a compass and a watch...and no autopilot !
Not easy to say coming from a heavy guy like myself !
All I can say is that when I ask some of my fighter friends which one they liked best amongst F104, F3, F16 or Thyphoon I look at their face and their sad smile and it tells you everything.

Grazie.

Dear Bufe ,

Before offending , you should read carefully , and write more carefully.

I answered to a question concerning the 104 , being not my personal experience (as I already stated) but an experience of one of my colleagues.

I understand a nickname can hide people with fake experience , but despite your pride describing your personal knowledge on the argument... honestly , there's no real element that could prove you are nothing more than a flight simulator fantasy pilot.

In any case , if you and/or your friends have a clue of what an F-104 is made of , I am pretty sure you also know a man called Augusto Petrini.

Wich came to work with me in WindJet , eating with me on the same table with other collegues , and who is now working in Livingstone.

If you know him ( and you should , because he acted as a pilot until the 104 was dismissed ) then ask him about this , and he will probably give you all the info you need.

If you don't know him , well... then we can discuss about the reality of what are YOU writing.

Oh ... and by the way tomdocherty72 , here's a book that my friend writed on the experience of the 104:

Saluti
Bufe
Fantasy pilot (flight simulator no però, mai retto)

Taita , leggitelo.

Autopilot F-104

The automatic flight control system (AFCS) consists of the stability augmentation, autopilot, and automatic pitch control equipment. Through this equipment, the AFCS provides the airplane with automatic stability augmentation about all three-flight axis, autopilot control through aileron and stabilizer to various references, and automatic pitch- up control of the pitch axis.
The stability augmentation system provides maximum stability of the F-104 in any flight attitude or manoeuvre. Rate-sensing gyros detect any sudden change of attitude about the aircraft’s three axis and produce electrical signals proportional to the deviation they have detected. These signals, after being amplified, are send to the proper control surface servo valve which produces the proportional surface adjustment to correct the attitude.
A synchronous transmitter on the servo valve supplies a feedback signal, which cancels the original signal causing any oscillation to be damped.
The trim system is powered and controlled electrically, and the trim actuator output is connected mechanically to its respective servo valve input arm. Energizing the actuator causes the input arm to change position, thereby changing the position of the control surface. In each case, the amount of trim selected limits surface movement in that direction by the same amount. Movement of the servo input linkages by the trim actuators causes deflection of the control surfaces to the trimmed position, but does not affect cockpit control stick and rudder neutral positions. A toggle switch located on the control stick grip, and an auxiliary switch located on the left console are used to control the aileron and stabilizer trim actuators. A three-position toggle switch on the left console is used to adjust rudder trim. Lights are provided to indicate take-off trim positions of the control surfaces. In flight, only the aileron take-off trim light provides an indication of control surface trim. Electro-mechanical actuators position the wing leading and trailing edge flaps. A flexible shaft interconnects the drive motors for each wing to synchronize the flaps and enable one motor to drive both flaps should the other malfunction. The flaps have three pre-set positions: Up, which is zero degrees deflection, or the faired position for the trailing edge flaps, and 3°downward deflection for the leading edge flaps; intermediate position, which is 15° downward deflection for both leading and trailing edge flaps, and is used for take-off or manoeuvring flight; and Land which is 45° downward deflection for the trailing edge flaps, and 30° downward deflection for the leading edge flaps.
Speed brakes, installed on each side of the fuselage aft of the wings, provide a means of reducing airplane speed in flight.
The two speed brakes are hydraulically powered and electrically controlled. They operate in synchronisation, and the pilot may select any position between ”full open” and ”full closed ”.
In event of loss of electrical power should occur, the brakes would close automatically. No position indication is provided.

Thread creep - Thread molto lentamente.

Gentlemen

Much as I find the current arguments on this thread interesting, they are mostly completely irrelevant to my original request. May we please get back to my original request for information from pilots of the AMI who flew the 'Spillone' for the article. If you wish to argue about who said what and what is true or false please start another thread!

Thank you.

Tom

Colleghi

Tom

Nota breve;
