I'm afraid it's not months but earlier. Hungary already announced first step of quarantine measures today against the second (first?) wave.

Two negative tests within the last five days or quarantine if coming from a "yellow" country, no admission from "red" ones. Not enough to halt all travel April-style, but could be detrimental to price-sensitive travellers since obtaining the necessary tests before return will cost over €100 per person, wherever you do them.

Blocking all non-hungarian passengers from a couple of nearby coutries Wizz operates flights to from BUD (Albania, Ukraine, Kosovo, Macedonia, Bosnia, Moldova, Montenegro). The list of countries will be re-assessed weekly. Def won't encourage hungarians to travel to other places either as their destination might pop up on the red list any week even during their holiday.
Plus a logistical nightmare for the operators/handling agents to keep up with the changes and handle the growing number of inads. |

Just as on any other airline and just as they also arrive by road. The trouble is, we can't stay locked up ad infinitum, hoping that the virus will just go away. Hence the move towards mitigation measures that are a tad bit smarter than blanket bans and compulsory quarantine - in other words, test certificates required for those coming from higher-risk countries. VIE airport actually made a huge business out of it by offering on-site testing for those not having a certificate with them. And the service "only" costs €190, as opposed to about €60 in an accredited laboratory outside the airport.
Is this a potential deterrent for the most price-sensitive passengers? Sadly yes. But is it also better than a blanket ban? For sure. We shall soon find out what it might or might not mean for load factors and service frequency. |
Hi, I just applied like two days ago on wizz air new website, at first on status appeared "currently reviewing all applications", today it says on status "default". Does anyone knows if that means something? or is just normal?... thanks

Strange. All my mates who applied were concerned with the exact opposite - that it started as "Default" and then reverted to "In review".

Wizz Air faces a shareholder rebellion over its decision to hand its boss a £485,000 bonus even though it missed the profit target required for a payout. Three corporate governance groups have raised concerns about the bonus before Wizz Air’s annual meeting on July 28, The Times has learnt. The bonus is likely to cause anger as it is being paid even though the budget airline cut 1,000 staff in April because of coronavirus. It also has made use of the government’s furlough scheme and has tapped the Bank of England’s covid corporate financing facility for £300 million. Wizz Air was listed on the London Stock Exchange five years ago and is focused on eastern and central Europe. It is based in Budapest and is led by Jozsef Varadi, 54, its co-founder. The Investment Association has issued a “red top” alert — the most serious warning of a breach in corporate governance — through its Ivis governance research service. The other two warnings are from Institutional Shareholder Services and Glass Lewis, which have recommended that investors vote against the pay report at the meeting. The airline awarded Mr Varadi a €532,714 bonus for the 12 months to the end of March as part of a €2.8 million pay package for the year. It is paying the award despite net profits of €281.1 million, missing the €294 million target in the bonus scheme. The airline had been enjoying a strong year, until it was hit by the Covid-19 pandemic in March. It said in its annual report that its remuneration committee had concluded that “it would be inappropriate and not in the interests of shareholders to allow the extraordinary events that occurred in the last month of the financial year to determine the outcome” of the scheme. ISS said: “Targets, once set, should generally not be amended.” Glass Lewis said that “remuneration committees should be mindful of wider workforce considerations” and it noted the job cuts and the use of the corporate financing facility scheme. The facility’s terms were revised in May — which was too late to apply to Wizz Air — to restrict executive pay at companies that had used it. |

The inner workings of the system remain an open question - and we are unlikely to know any more for another couple of weeks, I think. Based on whatever information about expansion plans and traffic growth is publicly available, I can't see anyone getting a start date earlier than sometime in October. Therefore, assessments are unlikely before the second half of August or even September. Hence, it's not particularly likely that anyone will get any reply to their application earlier than next month. Given the overall uncertainty of the situation and the fact that the majority of applicants will likely be unemployed and ready to start on a very short notice, the lead time for recruitment will probably not be any longer than absolutely necessary to obtain an ID card and pass the company conversion training.

Perfect! So we can continue enjoying the summer. I really sorry for my colleagues that still flying because Is gonna be a tough summer for them.
also let see if we pass the assessment again... that is the other history. and also you are guessing too much my friend. Some captains fired found a job already, other are waiting just to go for interview in China, Vietnam.... and also there is a number of them that decide to stay at home in Western Europe with their families and has no intention to reapply in Wizz. of course always they will have the chance of getting external pilots... but quality and quantity... that is another history. And how much time are they going to keep their crews in the company when things start to improve??? Because most of the people “lucky” to keep the job are really pissed off. With random rosters base change and almost 20% salary less. so some how I feel blessed to pass a good summer at home with my family and wait for a good opportunity in the future... |

The fact that they fired 270 pilots less than a few months ago, just to replace them and/or rehire them should raise gigantic red flags. If you think EK and the likes were ruthless in this crisis, these guys are even worse. Just be careful and be ready to be dismissed at the blink of an eye.

Is there actually any jurisdiction across Europe which prevents or seriously complicates the use of unpaid leave? As far as I know, the official reason to proceed to large-scale layoffs in an otherwise growing company was that "it was too difficult to coordinate measures to protect employment across such a large number of countries, all with their different jurisdictions". Which is surprising. Surely unpaid leave on a rotable basis between crews would have been easier to arrange than termination of a ton of contracts, followed by a new round of recruitment and tents and hundreds of new assessments less than three months later?

Of course it would have been doable. Same as part time contracts and voluntary redundancies. For just a few months.
They did what they did because they could, and they wanted to send a signal to all the employees, as easy as that. They now will accept anything for the fear od ending up like the 270 guys that were fired. They are bullies, no more no less. |
Same tactic as EJU currently uses in Berlin from what i hear from my former colleagues there. Threaten half the base with job losses and put the fear of god into them, getting huge concessions on contracts in return that will be the baseline for the next 10 to 15 years. Fear always works, pilots are not a very united work body and easily divided and scared like little kids. Works every time.

Difference being that easyJet has a strong union in Germany, and only local contracts complying with the local law, meaning that they cannot just do as they wish, firing with an email and just a few weeks notice, like Wizzair. They obviously use similar tactics, that's true.
Plus easyJet has not announced base openings like candies in the last month, and has no plan to grow by 200+ planes in just a few years, as the pink brigade. |
