Modular Students - Employment Statistics

Similar to the thread of OAA/FTE/CTC employment statistics, anyone willing to give info on recent modular guys/girls who have been successful in finding employment?

I can give you some idea, but only a fragmented picture. Your results may vary.

Of those I did my CPL/IR with (at a small Bournemouth FTO), of 15 I am in touch with:

2 at FR, 2 more didn't pass the assessment
1 flying the ATR on the continent
1 FI
1 at Flybe

Of the rest, one is working at EZY as cabin crew, and the rest are working outside aviation and still looking.

So, just over half got interviews, of whom 5/15 are employed in some form of flying job.

This is from IR Completion end of 2011/Start of 2012, some of those who got jobs did so immediately, some only in the last few months.

Those that got jobs clearly networked well before and during their course, and were able to job hunt straight away.

Those who sold themselves to Ryanair, well fair enough if that's your plan, but it doesn't work for everyone, and the streets are hardly paved with gold once you're there.

For those who don't find a job within a year or so will really start to struggle. I know a lot of people who struggle to fund their IR renewals, and then when they do get an interview/sim assessment their IR skills are so rusty that they drop the ball and fail their only shot.

It's a real shame, but I cannot emphasise enough the need to network effectively before you even start training, and have decent back up plans. Lots of people seem to use Ryanair as their plan A, without a proper plan B when they then don't get in.

modular, 23 from Rome, in FR. ppl-cpl-ir-mep-mcc-joc in rome( a FTO managed from former and current alitalia, italian army and firefighter (cl415) pilot.
TB in US, 4out of 5( the school open in 2010) in FR which 3 are modular.
In the sim Of the tr i touched the difference(quitly wide), against my simmbuddy, which was integrated(poor sa basically)... strongly suggested modular course.

Of the 5 others I trained modular with in Exeter 2 yrs ago:

1 Bizjet operator
2 with TP airlines (different operators)
3 no flying jobs (one didn't pass the Ryan assessment)

But remember for those aiming for Ryan, they require first time passes in all flight tests. I think only one partial is allowed with no failures. Have a bad day on a flight test and FR isn't for you.

HEED RTN11's VERY WISE WORDS!!

Very good idea for a thread by the way.

Modular, frozen since 2010, rated on the airbus.
Me and all my modular friends (5) are unemployed at the moment.
We were all working and over 35 (aviation related jobs with the disgrace of never had a family behind willing to pay eheheh).

Belgian FTO.

Still looking for a first flying job.

Went modular at a relatively small school (not OAA/CTC/FTE), took 6 days to get my first interview and I got the job. No contacts or anything. 737 job, not Ryanair.

Although it's true to say more don't get jobs than those who do.

Wow that is good going. Did the flight school give you any help finding it? How did you come across it?

I too am interested in knowing these employment stats. Hoping to start ATPLs this year while hour building and then CPL etc later next year. I"m not going to lie, i'm only getting older and at 26 with military experience it'd be interesting to know whether or not the investments will be worth it?

Even those of you who have gone down the modular route and haven't gone to the airlines, who have perhaps went to either BizJets or medium twins with private companies, it would be good to hear your stories / experiences.

That was a few months ago. I was super lucky, right place right time sort of thing.

I don't think the school helped me at all, but whether they put a good word in when I told them I had an interview I don't know.

Came across the company on Jetphotos. Was flicking through photos in Europe, came across a small operator so just sent in a CV and cover letter.

Flyelmoair

If you consider yourself old at 26 there is virtually no job for you out there...
Fly is first a passion, then if you are lucky enough it can become also a job.

I am 40, and in this regard i feel like a 20ish kid : )

Pudoc - that's brilliant, well done!

That's fantastic at any time, but obviously particularly special at the moment. I thought you might say that it was a while ago, so well done again!!

So guys what is the outcome of this thread? Modular = unemployed , integrated = far more chances to get a job? Staying unemployed sucks!

If you think those at Oxford or FTE who weren't sponsored are doing any better you need to think again. The only thing anywhere near a sure thing is CTC. The rest may help you get an assessment, but plenty of integrated guys fail them too.

The main thing to take away from this thread is that training is a big risk. Entering into it without a plan for a year or two of unemployment is unwise at best. Jobs are out there, andthose outside the big airline schemes are found by speaking to the right people and hanging around airfields.

I finished modular in early 2009, probably the worst moment ever to graduate!

Everyone I stayed in touch with is working as a Pilot now in various roles such as...

Biz Jet
Air Ambulance
Regional TP - myself included!

On the flip, lots didn't get jobs... its hugely about persistence, networking and a fair dab of luck tbh!

Personally I did 3.5yrs of para dropping which undoubtedly saved my career as I would not have been able to keep current.

Finished my modular training just before Christmas 2008. Started on a turboprop in January 2009. Been on the ERJ-145 since 2011. Networking was the key to getting my first job. I travelled all over Europe trying to get face time with the right people. Sending out CVs alone is never going to work.
