2 Jet jobs offers - 1 choice
Hi all
I´m a Commercial Pilot with 600hrs TT. 2 months ago I started employment in a cargo operator to fly a 727-200F, I have already finished the AC's ground course and I'm currently waiting to do the Simulator training in Miami that will be held on next month. Well, I can say that flying a 727 is the dream of nearly every Pilot, the salary is also quite good but its a small company with only one aircraft with another 2 coming god knows when. The thing is that last week I have been invited to do an interview in another airline that flies passenger's 737-300 and today I received the answer that I have been approved and should start the training next monday! I was happy with my 727 job but now I'm quite confused. Should I stay with the 727 that has always been the airplane of my dreams but in a small operator with no career stability or go to the 737 and stay there and make my career?
the pros for the cargo company are the 727, better salary, better social life and better environment in the company but the cons are that Im possibly wont have a chance to make a career in the company, the 727 type is not as good as the 737 for a future job in another place and i wont fly as much as the passenger airline
the pros for the passenger airline is that, as i said, the 737 type rating is much better for my profession, ill fly a lot and will be promoted to captain in maybe 4 years and, of course, the flight attendants . the cons are the lower salary, worst social life, i will have to live in another city (a not nice city by the way) and im sure i wont enjoy the job as much as being a freight dog. please guys I need some light cause i have to decide this week!

How many 727's will be flying going forward compared to 737's? Initially worse money but captain potential if the future. Oh, and the social side (hosties)... 737 option sounds good to me.
I can only wish I was in youre position as I've just finished the initial training mountian (CPL/IR/600tt) and at the bottom of the getting a job mountian! Many choices but no options as yet.

My advice is to be careful not to upset too many people with whatever you decide to do. You seem to have been very lucky to secure all these opportunities with so little experience. Clearly it is your life and you should do what is right for you as an individual. You say you have been happy with your 2 months employment as a "freight dog" so I am assuming this company hasn't treated you badly? They might be a little upset if you decide to leave them in the lurch after so little time.
I think you should decide what you want and then talk to the parties concerned. The risk (if that is what it is) is that you might end up with nothing at all.
I´m a CP-IR-MEL with about 330 hours, been looking for a flying job for more than a year from now, last month I went for an interview to work as an FO for Susi Air in Indonesia, a few days ago I received an answer that I have been approved and should start employment in october. last week I have been approved in a company that flies a learjet 35, my employment would be as a flight dispatcher firstly and make some ferry flights and then assume the position of FO when the currently pilot quits the company (god knows when), and yesterday at night I just received an email from a guy who wants me to fly his amphibian plane Lake renegade, he also has a bonanza so I could probably fly it as well in the future.
I live in Brazil, I really want to have the experience of living in another country (indonesia) flying more than 80hrs/month in brand new caravans, however the salary is crap and I heard a lot of bad issues about Susi Air on the web, another prob is that I would need to pay a bond of 2500usd to start working there.
the learjet problem is that Im not flying it right now, and those ferry flights couldnt be logged, the lear also flies very little, 20hours/month at most
the amphibian sounds like a lot of fun but its not a real job

Hello, thx all with the advices, and yes, as you just said, ive been kind of lucky in recent times, but before that i was unemployed for more than an year until the caravan job came. My initial plan was to stay 2 years flying it but then the opportunity to fly 727 appeared and believe or not, i wasnt looking for it, a friend of mine was hired there and the chief pilot asked if he knew any pilot with ICAO and some other qualifications so he mentioned me, i just couldnt refuse
and yes, im with this big doubt because i dont want to jump of job all the time, so i want to make a wise choice and dont be regreted after it, anyway, thx for you advice

sorry for the double post, but i forgot to mention what Bealzebub mentioned, yes, im happy with this opportunity to fly the 727 but i havent started it yet, just finished the ground course. until the present moment it seens a good place, as i said it a small company without the same structures of the other airline but its a good environment, but i shouldnt expect any career growth here.

TWO job offers, you lucky dog, i have the same hrs as you...but nothing yet.I'd go with the 737 only because it'll be around much longer and it's a way more popular a/c.Go talk to your chief pilot i'm sure he'll understand....oh and also tell him there's someone ready to cover your spot straight away best of luck

Being the plane geek I am, I'd go with the 727. They won't be around for that much longer and they are a great aircraft to fly by all accounts. 737's will be 10 a penny for years to come. If the 727 offers more money and a better lifestyle too, I'd definitely go with that as that counts for an awful lot. 727 or 737 experience are both good to have in the book for when you want to move on in the future.
If you go with the 737, let that 727 operator know I'll come and fly for them !!. I've got an ICAO CPL/IR.

737 as its only a few days dif course to get 737NG on your license should you need it at a later time for another job. Look after number one, because they will drop you like a lead balloon if they needed too. More 737-300 jobs in the world than 727s.

I'd love to get to fly a 727 flying freight for a bit if it's real. Get jet time you'll find another 737 job in the end. Enjoy the fun stuff. Not many people around get to fly that classic metal. I fly an efis ultra modern pax jet and frankly it's bloody boring and clinical. Just what is right for modern px transport. Enjoy it whilst you can. Where abouts is the 727 operator?

There's no place in the industry for starry eyed wannabes who dream of flying a certain type.
The answer is in the question:
Fly an ancient, unused (even banned in certain airports) type for an unstable, single airplane operator,or;
Fly a more modern, widely used type for a stable, larger outfit?
Take stability and modernity.
If you fly the old type and you're bust 6 months later, you're TOTALLY unmarketable. All you are is now another unemployed pilot statistic.

Been flying the 737 for about 6 months now, it was my first job outta flight school. A week ago, a Captain told me this "don't ever stay in a company/airline because you think you owe them something. the moment they feel they don't need you, they'll drop you like a hot plate. if you get a better opportunity to better your career, go for it"
At this stage in your career, money or benefits or where you live shouldn't be an issue. Go get the hours in a marketable aircraft and if things go bust, you'll have hours on type. that's what's important.
If you ask me, i'll say go for the 737.

Given that your first post said you would start training 'next Monday' you must have made the decision!
Perhaps you could let us know which way you jumped?
