MPL at Alpha academy

Hi folks,

Does anybody have first hand info about the Alpha academy, Sharjah and the acceptance of the MPL on the A320 by carriers around the globe ?

Regards,

ASM

MPL and you use the word carriers. There is not many carriers that will accept an MPL licence.

Right.... You are a student at AAA in Sharjah and are ready to explain all about the MPL.... But don't worry about it and concentrate rather on your studies to become a good pilot.

Nevertheless, and since AAA Sharjah belongs to the same owner group as Clark Aviation, I only posted the link to make the original poster aware that the MPL requires an airline to sponsor the cadet's training. Without it, refer to what is happening to the self-sponsored cadets in Clark.

Happy flying and remember to keep the wind out of your tail.

The MPL at Clark that traveller is speaking of was the first and only FTO to offer the MPL that was not affiliated with an airline. It was teaching the manufacturers (A320) SOPs in the hope that the self-sponsored cadets would still be a proposition for an airline.

Many, including myself, spoke of their dismay at this and how this was not being scrutinised more at ICAO level - in terms of did they canvass the world airlines to see who would actually take on a self sponsored MPL cadet?

As we know all the other MPL courses in Europe have been partnered with an airline - i.e Flybe/FTE and the Danish Airline MPL.

The down turn in the industry coupled with the mismanagement of Clark (training aircraft not being approved and cadets being sent to another FTO for training due to lack of aircraft) brought further ridicule to the the FTO and the generic MPL.

From what I hear, the self sponsored MPL course is no longer available and the FTO has to revert to the CPL/MEIR for non sponsored MPL cadets. The Cebu Pacific/MPL course wills till be offered to sponsored cadets.

The batches of cadets who are self sponsored on the MPL whilst it was in existence are ICAO approved. In reality, this really means nothing in terms of getting a job. The biggest argument against the generic MPL being that cadets waiting for a job can not even build hours flying GA without further ratings.

Thanks for your opinions guys.....
So what I make out from some of your posts is that MPL graduates don't have a significant advantage over the CPL/ME/IR counterparts....

VT-ASM says

Not quite.... The MPLs will have a better technical understanding/knowledge of the a/c type they are trained and rated on, while the CPLs will have to go through a TR course (+/- 3 weeks) to have the same rating on their licence.

If a cadet is sponsored by an airline and, therefore, a job guarantee, then the MPL is a good choice (my opinion). If not, then the CPL/IR will provide a wider choice in GA employment.

I favour the MPL but, as betpump5 says, the generic MPL is not approved yet. The type training is based on the sponsoring operator's SOP.

Lets hope that the generic MPL will soon be a reality.

Have you spoken to the Sharjah academy? They should be able to clarify your questions.

Traveller93 - why everything in bold text? Is this to emphasise your point?

Surely that's a major concern, especially in the current climate of having no choice but to watch and wait for a position?! Hourly rates on heavies and twins are not exactly encouraging...

@ Traveller93

Yes, I have spoken to them. The only ray of hope is the 'Guaranteed interview with Air Arabia' that they promise.
Hour building is definitely a major concern for MPL graduates.

VT-ASM,

I am slightly perplexed and concerned from what you have said. The FTO in the Philippines have stopped the generic MPL. But it sounds that Sharjah are continuing theirs? DO they have plans to follow suite with the Philippines and cease the self sponsored MPL?

Guaranteed interview with Air Arabia means nothing. And may I add to the first few posts that whether it is Clark Aviation in the Philippines of Alpha Aviation Sharjah, the (fatally flawed) concept is still the same and the owners are still the same.

To clarify VT-ASM, IF an airline that operated A320s was taking 170 hour MPL self sponsored A320 cadets, then yes, obviously they are at an advantage. Considering NO airline is, then the Self Sponsored MPL cadets are at a serious disadvantage as they can not fly GA without further ratings.

The MPL is by no means stable yet. Even the FlyBe sponsored MPL cadets that are partnered with Oxford or FTE have a clause in the contract saying that if anything should go wrong with the MPL during the course of the training, then the cadets will be automatically be transferred to the CPL/ MEIR training.

If an airline sponsored MPL is offering this contingency, then it is a no brainer as to how little confidence there is in the MPL in its current infancy. What more for the self sponsored MPL using generic SOPs?

Malirm,

I have looked at your past posts. You are currently a self sponsored MPL cadet at Sharjah is that correct? Are you part of the very first batch on that course?

Secondly, it seems you are through to the next stage of the Etihad Sponsorship scheme. Will you get your money back if you leave the MPL scheme?

Please clear some things up for us.

The Summary...

Hi guys, I waited till most of the guys with & against MPL to post & reply...now to clarify alots of stuff, remember I am not fighting but clarifying

I went to the ICAO website, ICAO magazine & ICAO Appendix D of the "General ICAO Civilian Pilot License Structure" that states the requirements of the MPL & other Licenses!, it doesn't mention a SPONSOR airline...it mentions a PARTNER airline...thats a big difference!...no Commitments or Ties! only joint training.

When I signed the contract with AAA, it was clear from the school's side & Air Arabia that I am guarateed an MPL...i.e. I will be issued a license what so ever...this means I will fly the 40 sectors (about 120 hours) with Air Arabia what so ever...clocking in about 170 hours of flight time...where I will just need 10 to 20 flight hours for a CPL/IR + Typerating (integrated) which is an extra of 4500 USD max!, so don't worry if life is unfair for a while...plus you can get your PPL after clocking the 70 flight hours (on c172) by doing a check ride & UAE airlaw test for PPL!...it is truely that flexible

I am in the 2nd Batch of Cadets, happy to say that the first batch of cadets will start flying in Sept. & hopefully I will in Jan 2010. @ betp...I was lucky to pass through to stage 2, but this doesn't mean they will return all the bucks...they'll get their costs & return the rest to me...if I was sucessful , don't worry I only paid the first 150000 AED!, furthermore, I won't have to attend all the flight school classes with EY...in the case if I joined

Bytheway, alots of visits by Air Arabia HR, Flight ops, Training Dept. Managers & Vice Managers goes on monthly if not weekly, I met the Senior pilots of Air Arabia (actually...they visit us)...who are bytheway close to our building...they were so happy & so confident that we are the best trained Pilots in Asia...they are comparing us with OAT & CTC trainees

About Getting a Job...one of the Senior/Management people in Air Arabia said clearly to us, "don't worry, your are Air Arabia Sons, you are a Priority in employment...just focus on your training & do well". Moreover, search about Air Arabia & see how many orders on aircrafts they have, see how fast they are growing...then talk about employment & to enlighten...Air Arabia owns 51% of Alpha Aviation Academy, they have assisted AAA with setting a strong selection criteria/screening (I met alots of people who couldn't make it through)...harder than that of Clark Aviation. Plus the fact that my last 4-6 months of the training will be by Air Arabia pilots & instructors! (partner airline)

Hope I cleared alots of stuff here...at the end I want to Fly...paying 100 USD or 120 000 USD (better if A320)...trust me if you NEED it (not want it)...you'll get it, you just have to work hard...I was lucky enough to get rich suddenly in the middle of economic crisis, See you around in the skies falks

Sorry for some grammar or spelling mistakes...I'm preparing for the GCAA tests & I'm in a hurry...be back online in 2 weeks

Lets get the truth

The Alpha Aviation Academy (Sharjah) General Manager has conceded an interview

On course | Transportation | Supply Chain Interviews | ArabianSupplyChain.com

in which he does not mention that the Clark Institute of Aviation was the first academy to offer the generic MPL (A320). Instead, he prefers to mention some other competitor in the business.

Why did he do it? Doesn't he know that CIA is a sister company in the same business group (Alpha Aviation)?

Beware.....

As far as I know, the only way to offer a self-sponsored MPL within the existing regulatory framework would be to attach it to a pay-for-your-own-line-training scheme. I and most others have a pretty low opinion of pay-to-fly and given the widespread skepticism towards MPL, I'd have to rank an SSPTFMPL as a very dodgy thing indeed. By the way, that new acronym means Self Sponsored Pay To Fly MPL.

There is an interesting corollary discussion presently on the Evidence of an Upturn thread regarding experience levels and accidents. A very salient point in that discussion is the fact that MPL brings back rigorous airline selection, while self sponsored training has a large element of self selection in it. Integrated schools have a selection process and some are probably more rigorous than others, but the process used to select cadets is one of the most rigorous and it's a safe bet that any airline venturing into the unproven MNPL will be even more vigilant who they choose for the first few years of MPL. This can only be a good trend and is a hidden benefit of MPL.
