Tyrolean assessment

Hello!

Recently, i have been contacted by Tyrolean for my initial assessment. Can anyone give me a bit of advice on what to expect, please. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Yeah.

Take your skis and have a nice couple of days skiing in Innsbruck.

The assessment is a waste of time. Very bizarre process.

I got through the knowledge test and the psychometric and then just sent home with no explanation.

You will find there are far, far more stories like that here, with Tyrolean, than 'success' stories.

A complete waste of time.

Yep, BellyAir's post is correct. Out of the 30 or so on my 'assessment', only 4 got through to the Sim check and I know that 2 failed that. It seems that a lot of emphasis is placed on psychometric testing, so much so that I felt that I was just a guinea pig for the Doc's (can't remember his name) research.

Innsbruck was nice though with some nice bars and restaurants.

Anyway, the assessment works as follows. ~30 people arrive and the group is split in half. One group does the aviation knowledge test (fairly straightforward, revise Bristol ground school), group discussion (random topic - we were asked whether we preferred active or relaxing holidays) and some form of individual interview/psychological profiling/examination with one of the Doc's assistants (very nice looking she was to!). The other group goes off and does the computer based psychometric testing which takes between 3-4 hours... usual stuff; remembering numbers and shapes, putting sequences in order, reaction testing, etc.

The groups then switch around although if you fail the first set of tests assigned to your group, you're off home.

Assuming you pass the tests above, you then do the Sim check and one further interview.

As BellyAir says though, it all seemed like a bit of a waste of time. However, if you do go (flights and hotels paid for by Tyrolean), I wish you the very best of luck.

Hope this helps,

V-PJ

In the current financial situation that Tyrolean are in, I'd be surprised if they have re-instated the free hotel for the assessment! When I went on the last assessment, it was free flight on standby, pay for your own hotel and pay for the assessment...
To be honest, I'm surprised the are calling people forward to assessment at the moment, as they have just instituted cost-cutting measures in the ground and office staff, with reduced pension payments, reduced hours and mandatory taking of outstanding leave. Not exactly the sort of thing you'd be doing if about to hire a bunch of new pilots!

However, you asked about the assessment:

Revise the FAA CPL question bank. The Theory test is EXACTLY the same as the questions in the FAA CPL book which I have, word for word and same graphs.

As a previous poster said, you are split into groups in the morning, with half doing the theory, and half doing the psychometric.
The results of the theory are given at lunchtime. All very gameshow like, with slips of paper given out with either 'Yes' or 'No' written on it. If it says Yes, you go forward to the Psychometric test in the afternoon. If it says No, you are on the next flight out.
Those who sit the Psychometic test in the morning don't find out results until the next day, so go straight into the Theory after lunch.

The Psychometric test is as described, the results aren't available until the following morning. Again, it is slips of paper, with flights home for those whose results are negative.

For those who are successful, you may do a sim check (FNPT with wonky controls, which you can't trim!) or an interview first. You will also do a 'Medical' where you take your existing documentation to the Tyrolean AME for review. You require a 'Stress ECG' for this - ask when you are in Innsbruck and you can be referred to a place in town where you can do it for around €100.
The Sim check, Interview and Medical may drag through to Wednesday. You will then fly home on Wednesday afternoon. I was told my result whilst waiting to board my flight, via phone.

When is your assessment Zouzi? I'm currently waiting for a start date with them after my course got cancelled last year when the economical isht started hitting the fan. Can't help but feel that it's good news if they are starting recruitment again!
About the assessment, don't listen to all the negativity out there, just go and give it your best shot. Before I went, I also heard that it was near impossible to get through, but hey, I got in. Everyone says that they only take about 5 out of every 30 or so, and it's true, but why can't you be one of those 5..? A question of seeing the glass half full rather than half empty...
Best of luck, enjoy Innsbruck. Cheers!

Hi guys

to be honest I am fairly surprised to hear that Tyrolean still runs the scheme in these days! Could anyone tell me what is the actual way of applying?

Thanx

PS: Is German prerequisite?

The application is just off their website I believe. And no, German is not a pre-requisite, although they state that they want people to be fluent within a year of joining. Any German knowledge would definately give you a distinct headstart!!

Question dislosure scotland

On my initial application to tyrolean they wrote back and asked for a copy of all paperwork
Found it a bit bizarre they asked for disclosure scotland.
At most places this is usually done after the job offer..

Tyrolean

Hi Zouzi

could you tell me where I can find their application? Is it an online one or do I have to fill it in and send it via post?

I have read in this thread that German is not a pre-requisite so I would assume that the whole process takes place in English. Is that true?

Cheers and Good Luck!

IT is good practice even though there seems to be no order or principle in their selection, I found the session with the Dr.''Death" and the subsequent computer based tests good practice for an assessment i had a few months later.

Good Luck

Tough but fair

On a 30 to 40 peoples group, around 5 succeed. Sometimes more, sometimes less. That makes an average of +/-10% succeeding.

I do not think it is more or less in comparison with other Airlines. At least, they give nearly everybody the chance to get to the interview, wich is really not the case with other companies.

So, it is a fair assesment. The psychometric is tough. Small Apple laptop. Be prepare to manipulate your mouse for 3 hours and do not take a break. Being fast with the computer mouse is really here the key.

The theoritical test is not difficult if you review your ATPL: Meteo, RNav, Pan Ops, Nav, Principle of flights.

For the rest, sim is strange but it's a sim. It do not flight straight, but once you understand it, it's OK. One ILS with G/A and then one non-precision approach.

If you reach the interview, be yourself. Safety is the key.

And yes, Innsbruck is really a nice place, so enjoy it!!!

Good luck

In this case, i would have to suggest going only if it doesn't cost you a penny (do they still provide stand-by tickets?), you have nothing else to do with your time during these days, aren't expecting too much of it and wouldn't mind going just for the experience.

Wink mh

If you have time and little extra money for food ,go there experience the nice area of Innsbruck.

Dont expect too much ,by the way no selections planned for next months.

but for the landscape and some nice Austrian food definately its a "go" decision.

Cheers

Here's my 10p worth...
If it's still not costing you anything then go for it. It's good practice. It keeps all the knowledge rattling around in your brain current too.
Don't expect too much. I went last April and out of 30 people only 6 got through to the interview/sim. They were all German speakers (Swiss/German/Austrian). It's not to say non-German speakers don't get through at all but I think you'd probably have to excel in all other aspects.

A note of warning on the flights. The tickets are Standby tickets. With 30 attendees, it can become a bit of a bun fight for who gets the remaining seats (if any!) We were all told to go home in the morning of the 2nd day. There were no seats available on any of the flights from Innsbruck back to Vienna until 7pm. That flight doesn't connect with any other flights to London, Barcelona, Milan etc (Destinations of the other rejectees I was with) So we all ended up making our own way home ( I bought a ticket back to Gatwick for £60 even though my car was at Heathrow.) The italians hired a car and drove to Vienna! Just keep it in mind..
