Bank Charges in NZ
HI all
CP49 er here.
Just wanted to ask if anyone has considered bank charges when withdrawing money from HSBC accounts while in NZ. Im gonna speak to the HSBC about it but was wondering if anyone has found away around this. Apparently HSBC charge £1.75 per cash point/ debit transaction according to my local branch, not hythe.

Tom,
I opened up a nationwide account as they apparently don’t charge commission or withdraws oversees. I’m then going to transfer my living expenses loan out each month.

If u are on graduate plus account with hsbc, theres no charge according to hythe
if they charge 1.50, then maybe set up and ANZ account in NZ and transfer your money to that account?

Withdrawal charges
I know that at least one guy in NZ started transferring his money for living expenses from HSBC to Nationwide every month. HSBC sent him a letter informing him he was in breach of the terms and conditions of his loan. Perhaps something to bear in mind.

True, if you set up a graduate plus account or any plus account you get free withdraws but you do pay £9 a month (I think) for the privilege. So over the year that we are out there we are going to pay about £110.

Another thought re cash - if you get a nationwide credit card, you don't pay commission on foreign purchases.
Either make a single cash withdrawal once a month from HSBC to minimise charges, and put suitable spending on the credit card. Then, make a single UK BACS payment from the HSBC account to your nationwide credit card via switch or whatever.
Obviously, you'd have to have discipline and budget carefully. And, I haven't read loan T&C's, so just thinking out loud here...

Phase 3 11th April?
Hey guys and gals
Anyone heading over to Bournemouth for stage 3 on 11th April? I know one of the guys I did stage 2 with is on the same one. I'm staying at a B&B the night before as the A34 is a bloody nightmare in the mornings! If anyone is going to be there, let us know.
Cheers

PAJ, if you were one of the guys there on the 23rd March, good luck! Only one of the Northern Irish guys will be joining you though (at most, I don't know what Mr Marshall is up to, I'm afraid) - my stage three/four has been pushed back to June as I can't head out to NZ until August at the earliest due to my degree.

HSBC do not have the right to tell you how or where you transfer your money too, I have had the same conversation with Lynda about being in breach of contract. The contract says that the HSBC account must be your main account, it is, I just choose to transfer a portion of my MY MONEY to another account each month (3/4 of the amount) at the start of the month.
That way I still use my HSBC account at the start of the month, paying 1.75 per transaction, then once the money have been transferred (3 working days) I use my Nationwide account for the rest of the month paying no transaction fees. Also the Nationwide card is a Visa debit card therefore allowing you to use it in bars/shops etc whereas the HSBC card is a Maestro card which means you can only use at an ATM.
It’s easy to set up a Nationwide account and with internet banking it only takes a minute (girl) to transfer money.
Hope that clears a few things up
