DHL Cargo

First of all apologies if this has been covered. i Did a search on DHL but nothing came up. Just wondered if anyone was flying for tis company at the moment? What are they like?

Reason being i have been working with DHL express for a year or so now as a courier while i continue my studies and wondered if this previous experience with the company may stand me in good stead for a future job application?

If you enjoy being constantly knackered and feeling like a worthless piece of sh*t and would like to relocate to LEJ and be paid less than a bus driver, this could be your ideal job!

It aint all about money, and new joiners with low hours can only dream of that salary.

Applying will do no harm, they will be recruiting soon due to the introduction of 3 767s later in the year.
Always knackered? no if you get real about the work lifestyle.
LEJ base, yes but not neccessarily a problem, depends on your personal situation.
Money, above correct again, you will probably start on a low salary, less than k30 but it gets better over time.If you are interested look at it,you can always ask the questions at the interview.
From the inside, you will work with good people, you wont work hard, circa 300 hrs flying a year and you will get to see the cities in europe most people pay to see.
300 hrs/year might not sound great but it is always going the right direction. If nothing else it may in this climate be a good stepping stone.
One thing not mentioned, job security. While nothing is 100% delivering boxes is a neccessity and night freight, while it suffers as everything does tends to be better than other areas in this buisness.(A generality I admit but how many freight operators have gone out of buisness/pax operators).

MikeAlpha has obviously never worked for a low co....

LEJ is a nice place to work. It isn't a bad place to live either. Expect to get yourself a modest apartment in the city centre for 400 Euros a month.

The DHL facilities at LEJ are stunning with beds, crew lounge, subsidised/free canteen etc.

Thanks FF and the rest of your guys. A salary of under 30k might not seem good to some of you guys but for those of us still working 10+ hrs a say and studying every spare minute available it sounds good! is the fleet mainly 75/767s out of interest?

Buster go nad is right about lej being not a bad place to work or live. But as for facilities being stunning, is a bit of a joke!! Not enough crew beds, subsidised canteen,, soon to be scrapped, T and C's at dhl are being eroded faster than a faster thing on a faster day!!

Not a bad place to work, but like any airline or company, it has meany problems which will take a long time to solve.

Balpa might help,, who knows?

757 wannabe

Fleet is currently 22 757, with 3 767 later this year and possibly a further 3 in 2010.

300 flying hours a year is about right, but unfortunately you do an awful lot of duty hours to achieve that. There is a lot of sitting around in freight flying, and the facilities are far from 'stunning', in LEJ and everywhere else.

As for being knackered, it all depends on how you can cope with very irregular sleep patterns. Some do, some don't, it's a very personal thing and you won't know until you try.

In these difficult times, freight flying is arguably about as secure as it gets but be aware that it's anything but 'glamorous'.

Its certainly an avenue i am considering once fully qualified, even just for a few years to get some experience, it might not be glamourous but flying is flying, and out of preference i'd rather not do instructing unless i had to.

Depends with who you applied: EAT or DHK. The last one is for sure Lej based, EAT not sure. We have no agreement with any airline.
At EAT we work at the moment still 8 on 6 off schedule, should be 7/7 some day. Al thought I would be surprised if they take people at the moment. 2 A300 left the fleet and 5 Fe will be fired if they can't find volunteers to retire. Looks as we go to a minimum crew ratio.
The work can be pretty hard but the atmosphere in the cockpit is great. Payment is nice but Belgium taxes way to high. The 757 is not really under crewed as I hear my friends flying on it complaining that they don't fly enough.

dhl @ EMA

Have heard a sniff of a rumour that DHL may be pulling out of EGNX & moving flights to Germany... anyone else heard the same or is it another daft rumour?

Haven't heard of any plans to close EMA. The first two weeks of 09 we operated a single hub from LEJ so a lot of flights were re-routed but things should be back to normal by now, if 09 is going to be a normal year.

It's all relative...

Ok I accept that some might not think that the LEJ are stunning...but it's all relative...

Not so long ago when I worked for a certain Low Co with a EI reg, I was required to night stop in Prestwick...The co very kindly booked me a room in the Toby Carlton (it's a pub) in Ayr. I'd stayed at the establishment once before in the 90's ( when I was flying Seneca's and doing Air Taxi) ...and I can honestly say (it was crap in the 90's) that I don't think the decor had been updated from my previous visit..

SO... I know DHL could do more, but I feel that they generally try to make some effort to male the job less unbearable...

And in DHL you WOULDN'T EVER be asked to stay in the Toby Carlton in Ayr...

Horses for courses...
