A300 B4 Type Rating - Question

Hi all, just wondering if anyone can help with this;

I am considering a A300B4 type rating, I was just wondering if this will suffice for A300-600 series

If not what do you think will be the additional training?

Completely different type ratings. Need different conversion courses. Fly much the same, but that's where the similarities largely end except for very basic systems which are about 70% similar. Two man vs 3 man concepts very different, autoflight on 300-600 much easier to use and more reliable than on the old queen of the skies. All cockpit panels totally different.

A300 A310 etc...

The A300 rating is valid for all the 3-crewmember A300s...
The A300-600 rating, is the same as a A310 rating, which are 2-crewmember...

There is also an "A300-B4 FF" rating which is for the few A300-B4's with two crew. (FF=forward facing)

In a previous life our HR dept. took on a contract Capt. with the FF rating. We were very short of Capts. at the time and it was thought he would be on line in a week or so. It took 4 months to get him rated.

A300-B4 F/O and FE

Hi,
It is possible that the A300-200-B4 opeated by Cpt, F/O and a System Operator, who is a Pilot as well? It would be The System operator and the F/O task interchangleable or in every case need to the Flight engineer job on the A300-200 B4?
For example: there is a company who plans to operate A300-B4 aircraft. The company has other multi crew aircrafts (2 men cockpit crew)and wants to its employees (pilots) to send to A300, but does not want to applies to Flight Engineer. It is possible the operation of an A300-B4 only by Pilots?

Hi, for your question ,exactly no not at all,A300 B4 series are three men cocpits.Everyone has own tasks in the cocpit.You can not fly a A300 200 B4 with two pilots.There got to be a feo.Only A300 FFCC is a two man cockpit as A300-600 series but it is different from A300-600.Flight instruments are different,they are analog in A300 B4 and FFCC series.In FFCC series the feo's panel shared in the head up display and in the pedestal.I flew FFCC and currently type rated on A300 B4.The type ratings are different as my friends told in the page.If you have A300-600 type rating you can fly A300-600 and A310 as well.But if you have A300 B4 type rating you can fly A300 B4 and if you take difference course (it is 5 hours or something groundschool and one sim session) you can fly A300 FFCC.

A300 B4

Hi, thank you for your answer. It is possible to have the Flight Engineer and the F/O license as well? So I fly as F/O in this week and next week as Flight Engineer? One person with 2 license? It is possible? Double authorization for the first officers.

F/E and F/O

When I started flying with airlines, my first position was flight engineer on 727.
Then I became flight engineer 707, then first officer 727, then first officer 707...
Back then, it was the normal career path.
Flight engineer, then first officer, then captain...
And you get 2 licences. One is Flight Engineer, the other one is Commercial Pilot.

When I was flying the A-300 B4-200, the "B4" designator had to do with the addition of the center fuel tank. The B-2, version was a short range plane with no center tank. So, All the A-300's that have a center tank are classified as a B-4. A-300 B4-100, A-300 B-4 -200, A-300 B4 -600. The -100's had Pratt & Whitney engines, The -200 had G.E.'s, and the -600 have the new two man cockpit, new avionics, gee whiz stuff and i have no idea what kind of powerpalnts they have, but it is indeed a different type rating. Also, the -600 had the weight saving program, new wing, all kinds of cool stuff. The first 250 A-300's had the Flight Engineer, the rest have computers!

Hi Guys,
I would like to thank you for your sufficient answers!
I am only the beginning of my airliner carrier and it seems that I have a possibility to work on A300-B4-200 Cargo aircraft. I think it is a normal way to working as a Flight Engineer first and after two-three years as F/O. I would be very happy! Unfortunately I have only ICAO CPL license and in Europe in all airline requires JAA license.
But I try every possibilities and I don’t give up! J

First you should understand the difference between a Flight Engineer and a System Operator.

Far to many people claiming to be Flight Engineers are nothing but System Operators. Pilots used by their companies to keep the seat warm, are such people.

Wasted Money

Why on earth do you want to waste your money on getting a type in a soon to be retired antique.....get it on something more useful. B737 or A320
