This seems to be a more up to date status for the remaining CL44s and confirms that s/nos 19 and 23 in Indonesia were broken up in 2002/3;

http://www.oldprops.ukhome.net/Canad...hotographs.htm

Given that Yukon s/no13 is too badly corroded to be returned to Canada for preservation, that just leaves the Guppy at Bournmouth and CL44D4-2 s/no 37 at BRZ in the Congo as potential (but currently unlikely) flyers.

S/no 37 is visble on Google maps; http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&hl...07145&t=h&z=18

On 3rd May Heavy Cargo said;
The Guppy was put up for sale yesterday for USD $25,000 without engines and props otherwise complete. Understand if not sold in 14 days it will be scrapped.
Has anything been resolved in relation to the Guppy?

Has there been any further progress with the Belfast?

Well,

As of the 21st of this month hasn't been any movement around Guppy since her propellers and engines were taken off. So far so good...

I UNDERSTAND THAT THE LATEST EDITION OF THE CL44 ASSOCIATION'S NEWSLETTERS SHOULD BE MAILED TO ALL MEMBERS WITHIN THE NEXT 7 TO 10 DAYS.
IT IS SAID TO CONTAIN THE STORY OF THE GUPPY'S DEMISE WITH DIRECT QUOTES FROM 'THOSE IN THE KNOW'
IT HAS BEEN HIGHLIGHTED THAT AT LEAST ONE CREW MEMBER FROM THE ORIGINAL FAA TEST FLIGHT OF THE GUPPY-FROM SANTA BARBARA Ca WILL BE AT THE CLUB'S RE UNION LATER THIS YEAR WHEN THE ORIGINAL CVR OF THE NEAR-DISASTER INVOLVING A PIECE OF THE MAIN U/C DOOR EMBEDDING ITSELF IN THE STAB FOLLOWING AN 'OUT OF LIMITS' DIVE WILL BE PLAYED

CL44

The CL44 Association Newsletter is published by the Association itself-it contains articles by members/non-members and is edited by the Association Chairman and Vice Chairman. Details of all the Officers are contained in the 'Association' section of the website (cl44.org)

And the chairman of the CL44 Association is a regular poster in the "Freight Dogs" part of Pprune, certainly during the last few months...

On topic again...

Apart from silly games (Yes, someone on this board has a serious permanent "out-of-body" experience/split personality syndrome problem)...

Is there anyone out there currently trying to save at least the cockpit of Guppy? I know of a devout CL-44 fan who is not a Pprune member who over the last few weeks has tried to get things moving, but so far to no avail. He wouldn't mind if someone else now stepped in...

The CL-44 Association is "out-of-bounds". See below as posted on the 30th of April and the 1st of May this year...
Heard through a friend at European that the Rep at Bournmouth can get authority from Heavylift to give the cockpit to a museum but not CL44 assn ?
and
My opinion is that any attempt by the CL44 Association to save the flightdeck is doomed to fail.
Unfortunately their Chairman was too much involved the past years and his actions have not pleased Heavylift as stated before. Maybe their actions did the whole case more harm then good.
Hopefully there will be a neutral party taking up the task...
Well, is there a neutral party? RAF Millom at
http://www.rafmillom.co.uk/ ?
Britannia Aircraft Preservation Trust at
http://www.britannia.flyer.co.uk/ ?
Another organisation?

Heavylift can be faxed at Fax + 61 2 9232 4668 for the Guppy.

Off Topic...

Off Topic mode on...

I indeed was contacted by the Chairman of the CL-44 Association himself through mail-by-Pprune this evening...

Off Topic mode off, enough of these silly games...

No more CL-44 Association after this October...

See http://www.cl44.org/ for a piece called "A Sad Farewell to the CL44 Association".

"It is with great sadness that I have to announce the closure of the CL44 Association. This will occur following the 2 day 2008 Re-Union to be held on the 31st October and 1st November.
Several reasons have led to this decision which has been endorsed by all of the Association's Officers.
Firstly, the 'passing' of the Guppy meant that no airworthy 44's are left to report on.
Secondly,I have become aware that the recent 'fiasco' surrounding the various factions involved in the Guppy have become too personal.
Thirdly, many of our founder members have, sadly, passed away and my own feeling is that I do not want the Newsletter to become little more than an 'Obituary Column'

Alas-my own health has deteriorated lately and shows no sign of improvement.
Marvin, Kevin, Hanneke, Mike and myself would like to ask ALL members to attend the final re union. At time of writing, we still have places available on either night and some rooms (double and single) are also available for booking.

So-PLEASE get in touch with us to book your place at the RAF Club."

The Airframe has created a lot of interest from an overseas museum that is why the Aircraft was moved back to it's original parking spot and there has not been anymore movement around the Aircraft whilst discussions are taking place.

As for the CL44 newsletter. It would be interesting for all to see how the association saw the demise from there side? I think we all know what there story will be!

I have said it before else where the CL-44 should never of been brought back to the UK in the first place. It was flown to Teesside but should of been leff in the USA and given to a suitable museum where it could of been cared for.

The following was posted last Monday evening the 9th of June on a local list dealing with Bournemouth-Hurn Airport. It was observed at 16.30 hrs.

"Did anyone else notice some metal fencing placed on the ground by the
CL.44-O? It looks horribly like the stuff they use when they're about to
scrap something so here's hoping I'm wrong!"

Also somewhere after the 26th of May the following was put up at http://www.cl44.org/ :

"SINCE THE NEWS THAT THE ASSOCIATION IS TO CLOSE DOWN IN NOVEMBER, TOTALLY UN-ANNOUNCED AND COMPLETELY OUT OF THE BLUE, AN INCREDIBLE OFFER HAS BEEN RECEIVED BY THE CHAIRMAN.
TO ENSURE THAT ONLY ASSOCIATION MEMBERS BECOME PARTY TO THIS 'MIND-BOGGLING' NEWS, IT IS BEING TREATED WITH THE UPMOST CONFIDENTIALITY.
ANY MEMBER WISHING TO RECEIVE THIS UPDATE-AND BELIEVE ME ITS WORTH KNOWING-SHOULD EMAIL THE CHAIRMAN ASAP.
FOLLOWING THE DISTRIBUTION OF THE NEWSLETTER, THE ASSN HAS RECEIVED A FLOOD OF REQUESTS FOR RE UNION ACCOMMODATION.
IF YOU WANT A ROOM FOR THE 'BASH' GET IN TOUCH ASAP."

The aircraft museum at Hurn appear to be claiming that they have secured the Cl-44-O for their museum subject to space being available.....they are already talking about it being an ideal place to store their bits and pieces. It seems the museum have managed to get some space at the airport.....whether that is enough space for the big bird remains to be seen.......

See this at http://www.aviation-museum.co.uk/frameset.htm

"Another bit of interesting and exciting news is that Andrew has negotiated for us to have the Guppy (free!) should we be able to find room for it on the new site. It would make a fantastic exhibit and its cavernous interior would provide us with lots of storage area and the potential to develop it for other uses."

Even though the museum itself was evicted from her leased premises because the aiport owners refused to renew the lease (yet another car park in the making...) the organisation is still up and running and looking for new places to stay. In the mean time this all shows that there is thankfully still a lot of local interest in Guppy by people who can actually make things happen...

Canadair 44-O and Shorts Belfast

A Press statement will be released soon concerning the future of both the Guppy and the Belfast at Southend.
The statement will resolve the current 'speculation' and mis-information current circulating.
