Three laps of the hold, no approach and then off to Montreal.
Best guess is a passing thunderstorm.

Dear Betsy: Not wanting to be argumentative, just interested. What makes you think it was CFP fuel? Is that information available somewhere that I don't know about? A quick calculation would suggest more than CFP carried. The CFP had 2400 KG CONT. They did approximately three laps of the hold. Those two items effectively cancel each other out. They choose to go to Montreal rather than the CFP ALT of Ottawa. That is an extra 1.2T. Add the fuel to carry that extra gas and I would guess that they loaded at least an extra 2.0T. Maybe more. I could be wrong. Really hard to say without actually being there. Multiple different factors would have gone into the decision making process. Too many to list here. Can't win them all.

My understanding is that they wanted to go to Ottawa but CYOW was at full capacity given all the diversions from CYYZ, so they had no choice but to go to CYUL. Thankfully they had enough fuel to go the extra distance!

Because it is aviation and it is interesting. Also, ... because it's not the normal PPRuNe industrial trolling nonsense that pervades this site. I'm sure there would have been some interesting and educational info that would have come from it, ... but alas this is the only forum we might learn some of those lessons. If the Captain were to write a short summary for a newsletter, I personally think that would be of value. Unfortunately, the sycophants would be out in force maligning the individual for seeking attention or other such nonsense. Come on Mr Final 36. There must be some interest (I dare not say passion) for flying still in you?

777 Pilots working for Cathay seem to feel an overwhelming need to write to their chief pilot for anything that happens in their operation. This normally gets turned into a story in the fleet newsletter. Quite often these stories are what you and I would call ‘just doing your job’.
it does show a level of fleet bonhomie though. Conversely the airbus pilots generally don’t bother. Anything they send in is usually met with a patronising retort or used against them.

To anyone contemplating writing to GL be very cautious , never ever be taken in by the “no threat just reporting culture “
anything you disclose may or will be used against you . I know of several people that wish they had never put pen to paper .
Don’t expand . The weather was horrible so we diverted . End of communication .

If YOW really refused them and fuel happens to be critical(which it obviously was not in this case), just declare an emergency and land. There is plenty of ramp space in YOW even if no gates are available. Probably the same at most airports.
I doubt they were "refused".

YOW Refused ??
Prime Minister Trudeau was probably getting a haircut near the airport so they closed the airspace. Rumour has it he was then going for his skateboard lesson followed by hot yoga..
