look ...I dont want to blow sunshine up any ones A&$e..all I am saying is that in that particular interview talking about those particular issues, he's actually pretty close to the mark...you cant talk about actual time to command by projecting into the future...no one can..there are just too many variables and market forces at play..ACTUAL time to command is how long those getting their upgrades NOW have been here and at the moment thats about 11 years give or take a few months... we all joined in 2000 and some have been on bypass for anything up to a year and a bit..thats not too far removed from what he's saying is it.
As far as direct entry F/O's, we're not talking about Cx's ability to get them..thats a whole different issue...just that the demographics are such that they may have to try

Since he is DFO and since he is being interviewed with regards to recruitment, one has to assume that he is directing his statements at potential recruits. He is advertising and promoting recruitment for CX.
Also, since he is the man at the top, one must also assume he has a good idea of what the plan is and how the numbers will / should pan out given a normal business environment, we can all see it and so should he.
It would therefore be somewhat disingenuous, to use todays numbers and time scales to attract potential new joiners, just as it would have been for them to use the figures from the 80' / 90's when we joined, but they didn't!
Its a bit like Hong Kong property developers's brochures....all Palm Trees and frolicking Dolphins, with the reality being somewhat different

Straight from EK website
Requirements for the Position of First Officer
- A minimum of 4000 hours total flying time (may include 25% P3 or FEO time to a max of 500 hr).
- A minimum of 2000 hours multi-crew, multi-engine jet aircraft (P3 time cannot be used for this requirement).
OR
- A minimum of 2500 hours total flying time on a modern commercial multi-engine, multi-crew aircraft jet (P3 time cannot be used for this requirement).
We do not accept simulator time for flying hours calculation.
- Must hold a valid ICAO ATPL
- English language fluency (written and verbal comprehension); ICAO English level (4 or above)
- Must be current within 12 months of joining
- Experience commensurate with age
- Type rating would be advantageous
To be invited to the Selection Programme in Dubai, we will consider candidates who are short up to 500 hours of the above requirements.
I'd be surprised if these iCadets have this experience.

Depending on which rumour you believe, there are some ex RAF guys on cadet course at the moment. They will certainly meet those requirements.

Emirates cadets in FTA as well
I believe Emirates train their cadets at FTA as well, or at least did several years ago. So they know exactly what training "our" cadets have. Probably cheaper to pay their training "bond" to CX than paying the whole training on their own.
Interesting indeed..
Heard rumour the other day that several of our ICadets have deal with Emirates already before they start their course with CX in FTA.
I saw this coming from miles away...

asianeagle....to quote RH exactly..."time to command AT THE MOMENT...is about 11 years or so"...just what does this statement mean to you?..does it mean that people who are being upgraded now joined about 11 years ago, or does it mean that people who join now will get their commands in about
2023?
2023?

Time to command is completely irrelevant at Cathay Pathetic.
Do you think that when your number comes up they just say, "OK! Now it's YOUR turn?"
Pre-Command Assessment, Command Skills "Training" simulator sessions, assessment by the "Star Chamber," Command Assessment Line Check, Command "course..."
Oh, and then there's the possibility (which has happened to more than a few) of being demoted once you are a captain (even after you have finished your probation!)
No one should ever think in terms of "time to command" when considering being an employee of Cathay Pacific. One should plan to remain a First Officer and becoming a captain is an unexpected and unplanned bonus.
