3 first officers left to buy a G.A. company that provides support to the mining industry in Western Australia. Now they get to pay off a new King Air every few years and earn a lot more $$$ than they did working for CX.

I cut the mustard back in the good old days on the RAAF Caribou and that is about as slippery as I like to get.
Flying around in a modern King Air would be frightening .... I'd be hanging off the tail with no one to scream at!
I feel much more comfortable in my 777 letting the other guy do all the work while I inject wisdom where I see fit .... If I do a sector it's usually in VMC with 5kts down the middle on automatics .... especially when I get the afternoon shakes.
Sure they might be making a lot more money than Dick Hall and myself combined but they don't have the prestige and honor that comes with wearing a fully starched hat

The guys aren't coming to VB on the 330 - possibly the other fleets,
We left the smog in 08, ..... and as much as I miss some of the lads, the hardest decision to make on a Sunday now is - Surf the Goldy or where to go for a dive ....................
Just polished off a kilo of prawns and a six pack on the deck watching the sun sink below the blue sky,
The grass was greener, ................ and I have grass!!!!!!!!!
Lads!

I wonder if our South Africans would have stayed if CX had adopted Captain Dart's cunning plan: retain the mighty A340-600's exclusively for Jo'burg, year round, with SA-based crew to fly them?
But what would I know? I'm just a pilot.

I know someone who left Cathay Pathetic to go fly a Caravan in Africa.
I did.
Have I ever wondered if it was "the right choice" to leave. Oh yes, I have wondered.
Have I ever regretted the decision. No, not once for a single second and never will.
- Way to many wankers in that airline for my taste
Cathay is simply not for everyone.

An interesting fact is that Hong Kong is the favourite destination for SAA pilots on the long haul. If you're not one of the most senior Captains or FO's on the A340 then it is almost impossible to get a Hong Kong flight.
The shopping, food and vibe there is awesome, as long as you know you are going back to SA after 3 days.

dont think people have a problem with Cathay , I just think they have a problem with living in Hong Kong
a 747-400 F/O in QF is on +$250K a year with limos to work.
limo - does that = Stretched Hummer with the doof doof and the bikini clad party girls hanging out the windows on the way to work in the middle of peak hour traffic? I gotta get a pair of gold rimmed ray bans......

Eish...
So sad to read these posts on this website....a few years back I was in the running for job at CX and did not pick any such significant negatives.
Seems lots has changed at CX...?
do you think there is a shift in culture in our industry one that may be evolving to oust long service..ARE number crunches seeing the fruits in getting rid of your senior level/higher pay scale sector.. (The blokes with the experience!!)
I suppose if you do the numbers it would be more profitable to have more JFOS than SFOS; majority of captains in the Capt 1-10 scales nothing higher.... what is the difference in pay between a CAP5 than a CAP 15, anything significant?
What about the old CX pay scale that some blokes are fortunate to be on?
So the more of you buggers that have done some time with CX leave the better for the man with the figures??
It was just the other day when Ryanair Michael O'Leary announced publicly that he would like to remove the FO from the flight deck altogether, train a cabin crew member to handle a landing if need be...
well very interesting just how these f*&#ers think!! (or dont)
Hope things improve to all at CX...

which means everybody will get to the higher pay scales eventually for doing the same job, so most f/o's will end up on the highest tier for years before being promoted. which will probably end up costing more.

I think the AOA should encourage people to resign... by actively researching, and promoting other jobs available in the industry.
And putting the salaries and conditions in the monthly updates...
I think this would be a very good way of putting pressure on the company to up its game.
Perhaps in the short run, it might be seen as potentially reducing membership. But I think the benefits in the long term would outweigh this.
for example
Vietnam Airlines: Hanoi: $9175 USD/month AFTER tax.
6 weeks on, 2 weeks off (Y Class to home base)
Korean Airlines: Seoul $8432 USD/month AFTER tax.
9 days off per month at home base.
Annual pay increases. Average of last 3 years is 3.1%
