It is clear many of you cannot see the wood for the trees. And then they put some embeceel like you at the sharp end of a passenger jet.
It seems you would not know the difference between a security officer or a policeman. I merely speculate as most of you have cited an armed robbery/hijack.

Stay away from Perth - no way. We love you Ozzies too much mate - our plan is too make you more like us and welcome all of Africa to our new home. It is OUR home - you gave it up mate.

a bit harsh don't you think?

The crew made a split second decision at the time and it worked out ok. ( not that I agree with what they did )

Anyway you must be truly proud of your country my yarpie friend.

If you must come over the Indian Ocean to our neck of the woods then leave all of your crime and slime home.

If we have to we can build a great big "rabbit" fence to keep you lot out of the east................

Got a couple of half-caste Aussie kids happily eating boerewors already. And they love biltong. And ,MATE, the word is "Jaapie", but then the Aussie vocab doesn't go much beyond F...... in any case, so what the...F.. :-)

gofor , howabout a name change? Bubble boy or Ostrich or "Frog in warming water not feeling the heat increase".
The old "crime everywhere" don't hold any water. Look at the violent nature of crime. The U.N. placed R.S.A. as 3rd most violent country in the world that is not involved in an armed conflict.( After Sierra Leone and Columbia, Columbia mainly because of kidnappings )

Did the military not go on strike a couple of weeks ago? Did that strike not turn violent? The police riot squad opened fire with rubber bullets on the military............... and this does not scare you???

A group of our Korean Cabin Crew have shelved their Soccer World Cup tour plans based on editorials in their local press.

Will the Cabin Crew to something so reactive?, possible, because of pure ignorance, you would not because you have surrendered to the criminals. These girls are from an environment where they, and my wife, can walk to the bus / ferry / train anytime of the night. They did not realize the danger, to them a handbag snatching is crime and criminals are cowards.

You seem to be very informed and interested for someone not in C.X.

Move to OR Tambo Intercontinental you say! Very unlikely for 2 reasons:

1) They charge R1367 per night vs R570 per night at our present digs (30 rooms per night equals R23910 per night increase in crew costs).
2) The Acting JNB Apt Manager hates Crew wether cockpit or cabin and will do everything possible not to have either group potentially under her feet...........

I don't think it would make any difference to cabin crew safety if they changed hotels in JB.

The sad reality is that rape statistics for South Africa in particular have gone up instead of down over the past 5 years.
This is on trend with the rest of the world. But is this a trend we want to see grow ? In South Africa in 2006 there were
close 55 000 reported rape cases. There are an estimated 450 000 rape cases that go unreported. Here is some more
statistical information on rape worldwide.Rape South AfricaRape is an occurrence which, according to official statistics
occurred approximately 16,000 times annually during the 1980s. By 2006 the official figure for rape was over 55 000 ,
unofficially, based on the premise put forward by the National Institute of Crime Rehabilitation that only one in twenty
rapes are reported, the figure is over 494,000 a year. This means that on average approximately one thousand three
hundred women can be expected to be raped a day in South Africa. A study by Interpol, the international police agency,
has revealed that South Africa leads the world in rapes. A woman was raped in South Africa every 17 seconds. This did
not include the number of child rape victims. It was estimated that one in every two women would be raped. Between 28
and 30 percent of adolescents reported that their first sexual encounter was forced. Of South African men who knew
somebody who had been raped, 16 percent believed that the rape survivor had enjoyed the experience and had asked
for it. According to a recent study police estimated that only one in 36 rape cases was reported and of those only 15
percent culminated in a conviction. Rape Cases Reported South Africa - from South African Police Services :
2002 - 54 293
2003 - 52 425
2004 - 52 733
2005 - 55 114
2006 - 54 926

Rape is not confined to black Africans either. Read "I Have Life" Alison's Journey; a rape victim of two Afrikaners who are serving life sentences.

I think it might be best if we keep the name of the hotel confidential for obvious reasons
Titan 404, I don't see the obvious reason.

There are plenty of safe areas to stay in close proximity to Joburg Airport, and without getting ripped off. I notice a lot of airline crews staying in Midrand which I find strange - there is bugger all to do up there and it is a semi-industrial area.

Why not look at Urban Hip Hotel in Bedfordview? Ten minutes from the airport and around 30 restaurants within 1km and all safe to walk to, even at night. Look at www.urbanhiphotels.co.za

Big picture stuff man. I’m not going to put on a public forum any of the hotels I or my colleges stay at for obvious security reasons.

More than ten years after leaving South Africa (due directly to personal experience with violent crime) and settling abroad, if there is one thing I've learned about those that are left behind it's this: When you're standing at the edge of a cliff, your back to a monstrous sea and no way out, it's reasonable that you defend the cliff to the bitter end, despite it being only a cliff.

So you think Koos and Sipho and Hai Kona are surfing Pprune to find out where their next victims are!! If the criminals want to find you, Pprune is the last place on earth they would ever look. Next time you are collected from the bus terminal at ORTIA, don't look too hard at the white BMW 3 series following you to the hotel. Maybe you could get your entire crew to change into Egyptian soccer outfits and pretend you are on a soccer tour - sorry, I forgot the Egyptians were robbed during the Fed Cup, so that disguise won't work.

126.9, not left behind. Spent 15 years outside SA and have two 1st world passports. Admit I did not feel safe for many years after returning to SA but violent crime is now way down and I definitely feel a lot safer than I ever have. It is also about black and white getting along and feeling like brothers and sisters and racism generally being a thing of the past. Now the criminals are just criminals and it is not a racist thing anymore. If you are a victim, then you are just a victim, not a black victim or a white victim. I now feel like a true South African, and I am proud of South Africa.

When you’re prepared to put your full name, home address and phone number here on this forum and I can have it officially verified, then and only then will I be interested in talking to you about security. After all the biggest threat for you is coming home from the shopping mall.

PS: It's not the only threat and since you’re the spelling police as well I will correct my slip up. Colleague. Happy?

Is this in the wrong thread?

huh? so what you're saying is that the offender in question was actually a real Police officer off duty in his uniform??????????
Maybe this belongs in "Friday Night Jokes", but there is the Bulgarian joke about a lad who applies to become a police officer and, in the course of the hiring interview, asks about the salary.

"What do you mean?" asks the interviewer, "We give you a gun and a uniform: Help yourself!"

I do infer that the CC who overpowered the enterprising lad had martial arts qualifications or that the lad was overoptimistic with respect to his build and fighting skills.

I wish we knew more before continuing this thread.

---

Moving on, rape is complex and difficult to investigate. Few admit to being raped, especially men and estimates are rough guestimates at best. One figure out of some hat for New Zealand said it happend to 25% of all women there -- I will hardly vouch for it!

If the hearsay on female victims is correct, do 16% of male victims enjoy it too? If you're going to publish such a figure for one gender, it is monstrouly unfair not to (1) publish a figure for the other gender or (2) delete mention of such incomplete data.

Now let us simply become mindful of doing whatever little things we can to prevent anybody's rape.

By the way, we are going off topic too.
