Congratulations China :
If ever the world needed an aide-memoire that the Peoples Republic of China is a power that is here to stay then the world was reminded last night. Long may it remain so. Coute que coute.

It was a pretty damn good opening China pulled of there - no doubt. Thank God it was after dark - where the pollution is so much harder to see (and face the reality!).
I was expecting to see a bit more of Helle Kitty and Mickey Mouse though - guess now a days China is not nearly as fascinating as it was in the past.
Congrats on the opening and thank you bringing up this topic.

Hello Kitty is a Japanese idol, not Chinese. I watched the opening ceremony on TV and must agree that it was outstanding! Sure the place is polluted, worse than Hong Kong. Even more remarkable what they have achieved in such a short time span. The Olympic venue facilities and the new Beijing airport terminal. Compare that to LHR Terminal 5!

Very tragic, embarrassing and aviation related depending upon one's point of view.
A US tourist has been stabbed to death by a Chinese man in central Beijing, officials have said.
A second tourist was badly hurt in the attack at the Drum Tower monument. The pair are relatives of a US Olympic volleyball team coach.
The assailant then committed suicide by jumping from the 13th Century landmark, officials say. The motive is not known

Why not! Hong Kong is part of China
and this is related to a hong kong aviation forum how?
AGNES,
I agree.
However, I think I speak for most citizens of any country hosting the Olympics that, whilst it is an opportunity to show off a bit, the event concentrates world media attention and one hopes that nothing embarrassing happens to any foreign visitor to one's country.
Unfortunately, although the security services can be on top of likely threats, there is little that can be done to defeat a random nutter.

I thought the opening ceromony was good to, but for some reason it seemed to keep reminding me of Pink floyd "THE WALL" movie with all that conformity and marching soldiers and kids holding outstretched hands?. Still though a good effort.

Whatever my opinion of China the opening ceremony was undoubtably one of the largest spectacles the world has ever seen, but then again it did cost US$100,000,000 - 2 times that of the Athens ceremony. Or 10 cents US from everybody in China, in Greece it cost $5 per person - it's all about economies of scale.
As for an aviation interest/link, if you didn't watch the ceremony then you wouldn't have seen the helicopter flying along as 29 sets of fireworks were fired from the ground forming 'footsteps' across Beijing and into the stadium, representing the 29th olympiad - very creative.

Off course the U.K. will not be able to compete, you cannot evict people from there houses with no componsation to build an Olympic event.
At least you will have uncensored internet access in the U.K.

CXtreme;
It's not necessary to offer excuses one way or the other. Just accept that England can't possibly measure up to China's tour de force. One does not have to think very much about why this is so.

With a country being run by a bunch of " GOONS AND THUGS " I can only smile and shake my head..
As far as the SMOGLYMPICS are concerned..the IOC should never have given it to them..
..and I'm not even going to get into their appaling human rights abuses debate here.. absolutely disgusting place...
