That yahoo link said the captain was sacked from his half million dollar a year job. 777 Captains get paid that high? Even on A-scale?
And wasn't clearance given for the flyby?

Hmmm.

Every now and again, the grey matter has a meltdown, and even those who think their stools don't stink do something extraordinarily stupid. If it is true that, in this case, the perpetrator was responsible for the random sacking of 49 CX pilots just to show his power to the pilots' association, then he certainly deserves the fate which has befallen him. By the look of him, Mohammed (peace be upon him) (cough!) - might be welcoming him to paradise sooner than later.

There were 3 circles on the photo, Ian , The Fo and Mr Pratt
Incorrect, the circled guy at the back of the picture is in fact a 777F/O (aussie guy PH) not the chairman.

The "Infamous" Gimli Glider of Air Canada was retired to the bone yard a month or so ago and as a farewell the 767 did a fly-by. No one was "sacked"...

Just a query...
Are CAD people or other HK Government reps brought along on these delivery flights ???
I would be suprised if the PR element did not ask some Govt. rep along.... Asia World City etc etc

joebanana #262: Thanks for that. It puts things into perspective. Imagine what the photo would have looked like if a cameraman was sitting in the sand when that particular aircraft did its low pass.

But the CP hasn't got a hope in hell of getting his job back. The main issue is the unfortunate F/O.

ampan - you say the pilot hasn't a hope in hell of getting his job back? Not as CP B777 fleet perhaps, but do you think they will reinstate him as a line pilot?

It's really all up to Cathay. If they are prepared to partially back down and employ the ex-CP as a line pilot, fine. (That would seem to be the fairest outcome.) But if the ex-CP gets legal, he'll run into a big problem: the court/tribunal won't substitute its own opinion for that of Cathay. All they will look at as whether dismissal was an option that was open to a reasonable employer. In other words, even if the court/tribunal thinks dismissal was unfair and that demotion would have a more appropriate punishment, it won't interfere as long as dismissal was a option that was open to a reasonable employer.

Give your head a shake

Do you really think, after all of the bad PR around the world (CNN, BBC, OZ ,CBC ETC) that CX could back down. You are dreaming, and at any rate he doesn't deserve it given what he did. I know 49 that should be back long before he is.

"Think the dismisal was unfair??" Lets see, he took a 200million dollar airplane, with 60 people filled with fuel, and for reasons know only to himself and without any FOPs official approval flew so low that one flinch on the controls , say a bird hitting the windscreen, and they were a fire ball. Yea, a judge is going to say it was unfair to dismiss him for this...riiiight. See above ref 49 for unfair.
Imagine the lawsuit if he had flinched, cartwheeling it into the boeing hangers destroying a production line or two.
The other examples of low passes that are on this thread differ greatly. Generally they all were approved, and not done with unknowing passangers, nor full of fuel with a new airplane on a commercial flight. All delivery flights are in fact commercial flights.
It was an unfortunate incident that has been delt with. We have hashed it out plenty. Time we move on.. and no low flying
